Straight Fire Plasma from Moving Emitter

Archive: 13 posts

Okay, in my level I've been working on today, I have this obstacle where from the opposite end of the obstacle there is a thing moving up and down with an emitter emitting plasma balls that fir all the way across the obstacle your direction. My problem is that no matter how much I tweak the linear velocity and angular velocity, I can't seem to get the plasma to fire in a straight line. Now if I stop the moving emitter, then of course it's not hard to get it to fire straight as it does automatically.

Is there any way to have the plasma fire straight while the line of plasma moves up and down?

Maybe by having the emitter emit a small, invisible bit of dark matter with an emitter, which itself will emit the plasma balls?2009-10-21 23:42:00

You need to ensure that the emitter emitting the plasma is not moving when it emits. Best bet is to emit a small piece of dark matter and then have that emit the plasma.

Edit - Oh, so it's like that is it v0rgamesh?

I've never tried this, but maybe if you put the emitter on the thin layer in front of the object on a wobble bolt that is moving clockwise and counterclockwise at the same speed as the piston is moving up and down, it might fire the paintballs straight, assuming you could get the angles right.2009-10-21 23:55:00

Lol, is it funny that I read the first post and immediately wanted to post what both of you had already said?

Anyways - a bit more on that - you can emit the DM behind the shooty thing so the player never has to see the DM.

Oh, I forgot to mention. Nested emitters can give lower thermo on the actual displayed thermo in create mode, but then blow thermo in play mode. Just something to be careful of if you are nesting emitters.2009-10-22 00:00:00

It won't let me stick an emitter to the invisible dark matter.

How is that done?

The dark matter doesn't need to be invisible, just put it behind the moving block, and it will be gone before the block is out of the way.

Or, alternatively, you could use the plasma glitch to ionize it, put it in a particular shape, use a sticker to make it a particular colors, and make it part of the "animation". It only needs to exist for like .2 time units, right?

I'm imagining a kind of "cartoony" firing where it the weapon has a sort of hesitated flare at the muzzle before firing.

If you can't hide it, incorporate it in some way. It'll all happen in a flash anyways.

EDIT: Oh, and I'm sure if you glitch overlayed it with itself a couple of times after ionizing but before putting on the emitter, it would just be a huge glow anyways, assuming that turns out to be technically feasible.

cant stick stuff to invisible dm when its invisible, gotta enlarge it to where it can be seen, place the emitter on it (make it abit large first) then shrink the DM to invisible.2009-10-22 01:05:00

OH! or (unless you need to destroy the gun) you can just have a mag switch go up and down and set off a series of emitters 2009-10-22 01:07:00

That would still work if you want to destroy the gun - just make the mag key the part that moves up and down and each emitter has it's own switch.
