Editing posts with embedded youtube videos

Archive: 15 posts

When I embed a video from youtube and click "submit post", the url just gets embedded automatically. However, if I then edit the post, it does some parsing on the url and comes up with some crap.

For example: This shows up fine, because I entered it manually during the edit:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOYZtZYaHEY&feature=player_embedded"]YouTube - LittleBigPlanet | Subterranean Setbacks [1P/Hard] by rtm223 | Gameplay [Part 2 of

This is what happens after editing:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOYZtZYaHEY&feature=player_embedded"]YouTube - LittleBigPlanet | Subterranean Setbacks [1P/Hard] by rtm223 | Gameplay [Part 2 of (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOYZtZYaHEY&feature=player_embedded%22]YouTube%20-%20LittleBigPlanet%20%7C%20Subterranean%20Setbacks %20[1P/Hard]%20by%20rtm223%20%7C%20Gameplay%20[Part%202%20of)

Similar happens when quoting it seems. Sorry for the double post, I was just testing.

Check this out. I disabled auto-embed (from now on, anyway) and added a new way for us to show YouTube videos. Just wrap [youtube] tags around any YouTube video link, and one click will load it in a pop-up litebox. Try it out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vc_u27KKi24

If it doesn't work, hard-refresh (ctrl-F5) the page and try again.

I know you are still testing it, but I'm getting a weird white box in the lower right:

Yeah, that's from having the CometChat chat window open at the same time. I'm looking at ways of fixing it right now.2009-10-22 03:46:00

Test. (and shameless plug )

Edit: Is there a way to change the text on the link? It does not appear so.

HD and fullscreen have been enabled as well for all YouTube videos that support it. I was not able to fix the overlay issue, but it seems it will only happen when a cometchat window is open, which, to be honest, won't happen often anyway because you can't really watch a video and chat at the same time.2009-10-22 04:30:00

Also, I'd like it if it showed the video name, to prevent Rickrolls and the likes.

I never watch random Youtube videos.

...

...

Yea...

New Update: The [youtube] tag now supports a custom title. If you type this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vc_u27KKi24

You'll get this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vc_u27KKi24

But if you type this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vc_u27KKi24

You'll get this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vc_u27KKi24

It's a lot better now, I think, since you can customize the title if you want, but if you don't it'll add a generic title in its place for you.

EDIT:: Or Profiles

It won't embed anymore, but that's something we actually wanted because it can be an unnecessary load on users who don't want to load the content. Now, those who want to watch the content can easily do so, while those who aren't interested don't have to worry about the YouTube video slowing page load times. I have rebuilt the post cache, though, so all old videos using the [youtube] tag will function as expected. For those videos that don't work anymore, there's not much I can do to fix it on my end, but it should be fairly easy for you to go in and change them to use [youtube] tags.

BLAH BLAH BLAH... Not quoting whole message to save space...

Yea, that's good.

Thanks0rz!!!!1111!!

I guess I'll just load all videos without sound on, just incase of the whole Rickroll, thing.

Actually, yeah, you are. That was just some confusion from earlier because videos that used to be embedded now are not embedded. You can still use the new [youtube] feature and it will work just fine.

The old tag seems to be incompatible with the new version now.

I had to edit my blog entry to replace

[YOUTUBE]abcdef123
into

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abcdef123
in order for it to work.

I assume any older use of the [YOUTUBE] tag will similarly not work.
