So what are the MM level designers busy doing?

Archive: 17 posts

As most of you know, Media Molecule haven't come out with many levels since the Metal Gear Solid pack, they've only made two gallery levels.

There are four level designers (tell me if I'm wrong.) As Danny said on one of the Media Molecule podcasts, it'll take ten weeks to create and finish a level at the office, but I doubt it'll take such a pro that long.

If we use Danny's estimate and say that it really does take him ten weeks to make a new level and say that if there are four level designers and all taking ten weeks to make a new level, that means there will be a new MM level every two and a half weeks!

Seeing as they haven't come up with a full level for a while, my guess is they have a nice and tasty meal in the frying pan that is almost cooked to perfection and ready to be served.

So when and how do you think these new MM levels will turn up? Are they going to give these levels away bit by bit? (in packs like MGS.)
Or are they going to come out all at once? (for example an big expansion pack.)

Discuss.

I agree, they wouldn't release a new game mechanic without having a demo level, but obviously that's not the only thing they've been doing. I'd like to see a big expansion, with a new story in. Surely one big pack is the best way to draw more attention to the game.

I think Insomniac said that Mm is going to have a Ratchet and Clank pack that is bigger then the MGS pack.2009-10-21 22:56:00

What is this "Insomniac" source again?

Please let me know, because that would be great, but I don't know this source off the top of my head and how credible I should consider them.

It was a tweet that someone at MM sent to someone else, but it didn't confirm that the pack was in fact Ratchet and Clank related. It did confirm that a pack is coming, though.

?replies from @mmalex, lbp levells coming, r&c content done, coming soon hopefully, up next for mm, big pack, bigger than mgs even.?

Everyone assumed that the level pack was R&C related, but it appears they are two different things: LBP levels and R&C content.

Insomniac are the people who make Ratchet and Clank and Resistance games, so I think they are pretty credible. I haven't seen the actual quote, but I am pretty sure that I heard about it on a credible site.

EDIT: Someone posted while I was writing this. Guess I was wrong about the source and I might be wrong that it was Ratchet and Clank related. But at least we have something from Mm that confirms that they are making a Level Pack, which is great news.

I think that it is highly likely that a Ratchet and Clank pack is being created or has already been created. Seeing as how the last in the Future trilogy of games is coming out in mere days, we'll see if Media Molecule announces something officially.

But for now, we speculate.

They're making a big Final Fantasy level pack, is what I'm hoping.

I recall they announced Old Snake and Sepiroth at the same time, so it could very well be that a deal was made similar to the MGS pack deal.

I would imagine, they would be split up. Some working on dlc and some working on their "next big thing". MM must realise that their company just isn't viable relying on one game (no matter how awesomPe that game is). Now if its a LBP2, a LBP spinoff, or a completely new IP is anyones guess. But if I were a betting man, I'd be sure that their working on something thats not going to be just regular DLC for LBP. They know LBP dlc can only bring them so far as a company and I would imagine/hope that they are looking into expanding the LBP "universe" significantly. Imagine a game like modnation racers but done LBP style from MM. Imagine a first person "3D" editor. Imagine a side scrolling arcade shooter LBP style. All customisable from scratch, all uploadable to the same server. Imagine how cool "cool pages" would be then. Flicking inbetween, LBP platformers, LBP racing levels and arcade levels all on the same page (hopefully with the ability to group them into genres if you wanted to.)

OK thats more of a wishlist, but hey they could just be working on a few more levels either

Sadly, I think the R&C pack will be just a costume pack. (No swingshot for me...)

But I hope that the water pack is "Bigger than the MGS pack".

If not, it'd better be R&C.

I'm getting whatever they put out for R&C. xD

If they do just make it a costume pack, though, I'll be kinda sad.

R&C pack is more than likely just gonna be the standard costume/sticker pack. One of the devs hinted at it being released when the next game comes out so I would expect the announcement on Monday.

As to what the level designers are up to? The co-founders said that everyone at MM is working on LBP "in some form". Someone asked if a sequel is being made and I think it was Spaff that replied and said that they had talked about it but nothing was on paper. It is unusual for a company to survive off of one game but that's what MM appears to be doing. Given how small of a company they are and the frequency of DLC releases I guess it's possible.

It is almost a certainty that the water kit will have levels with it. One of the devs mentioned "water levels" in a post on the workshop forums. I don't think MM would bother making new levels unless there was some big new feature for them to use. Just like the MGS pack with it's paintanator, water is a big new feature, it gives the devs a chance to create some new and original gameplay elements. It's pretty obvious that the "up next for MM, new level pack, bigger than MGS pack" tweet was referring to water.

That would be sweet if they made a giant pirate related series for the water pack. Imagine if they released a Foam Sword power up lol!2009-10-23 20:36:00

They'd better make some water levels...none of the levels in the beta are really that good, I mean most of them just use water as a novelty because they can, so wee need something to inspire us!2009-10-23 20:39:00
