Whichever Way the Wind Blows- Silver

Archive: 54 posts

Ok so im bringing this thead back up as I decided not to make this level over christmas... I made Planet X instead.

I have instead decided to make this over the Easter period instead, which starts in 2 weeks.

I've been thinking about this for a while and have decided to set my sights on a SILVER level to go hand in hand with the GOLD one. As you can imagine it will be based on a the same idea- balloon floats in, drop off, play level, balloon takes you back.

So now for the theme- I was originally thinking of creating an icy level with a similar theme to the blue book ending in Myst finale. However have since decided that the majority of the game will take place in space...

Im currently thinking, kinda like a steam punk/space style... or space punk (i suppose). So perhaps an abandoned spaceship to explore?

Any ideas you've got I'd love to hear about!

Thanks.

Yay you're extending it! It's an awesome series, I regret not saying it earlier, but your levels are great. I had an interesting one, an Amethyst edition, where you journey across gleaming purple crystals 2009-10-20 21:06:00

Cool yeah give them a go! There's three up at the moment- BLUE, RED and GOLD. They all are really different platforming levels with different themes but similar intros and outros. Obviously as iv only just started planning the new level all opinions and ideas will be considered and may even be put in the level!2009-10-22 19:09:00

Sounds awesome. You should definitely not wrap this series up any time soon, I mean just think of all the colours you could do!

For this silver one I was thinking you could have a medieval environment that could be all icy and snowy like you mentioned. Throw a bit of fantasy in and an ICE DRAGON it could turn out to be a pretty epic level =D

Silver could work for a few themes. Such as: ice, futuristic, space (you could save space for if you chose black).2009-10-22 21:34:00

I'd love to see more of the series, but as a note, the series has been going long enough that I'd like to see it begin to shift in tone a bit. Perhaps finally put down a couple things to hint at a larger story that's secretly been running throughout them all? Even a single attention grabbing background object can accomplish this - story doesn't need magic mouths.

All I know is I love this series, but I'd really like to see it go somewhere so it doesn't begin to feel like syndicated "always-returns-to-status-quo/no-character-development" adventures, so I think throwing us some kind of narrative curve-ball is called for.

I think it would be nice if we got an "aha!" moment and really got a flash of insight as to why we've resigned ourself to life constantly adrift at the mercy of the winds - even if it's subtle.

I agree with jagrevi. You know how I love these, and I think you should go with a sort of mountainous snowy feel. Could be based in like The Himalayas and have a sort of Ancient, Chinese setting. I think this would fit well with your series.
I could list settings for your levels to do. I want to think outside of the box.

Green-Mayan jungle
White-Take the snowy iciness even further to a blizzard landscape
Purple-Jewel caves
Orange- Autumn countryside of hills and small villages
Whole Spectrum- Sky palace

Eh?

I agree with Jagrevi about making the series go somewhere, for example, maybe introduce a main villain, but don't have that villain as the source of all the problems in the scenario's that you come across, just make the player aware that there is a villain, and then maybe one day when you want to wrap the series up you could have the story for the ending level, to do with him. Maybe introduce this villain at the end of the "Silver" level.2009-10-23 17:50:00

Hm yeah im loving this idea of an underlying story...

i originally started the series as a strong platforming level without too much need for a story line but i would be interested to maybe expand the series into something more than just platforming in different locations...

If i were to do this however i would be inclined to go back and edit the others slightly in order to hint at an underlying evil throughout each level- as of course there is no order to play these levels in.

I think that the better way to do this is to come up with a story that comes out of what you've already created organically.

Basically, don't go back and conform what you've established to this story, conform this story to what you've established.

Think about what questions have already been presented without an answer, and work from there. I brought one up already (why do we wander at the mercy of the wind like this?) - but I'm sure there are more.

I think stories should evolve naturally from the existing material, and the best way to do that I think is to simply ask yourself what has been established, but has not been explained.

Maybe you could give them an order?

Example: Whichever Way the Wind Blows Episode 1: Blue

Also, another suggestion for the story, you could make it so that the levels are going back in time, so you slowly realise why this main character is travelling the skies, hoping to find some problem to fix. You could find out that your character did something wrong, so he was sentenced to wonder Little Big Planet and help others. Maybe he was a H4H'er?

I don't even think you need to be this explicit and rigid. If these levels have already been established as not having a chronology, then a think a better fit would be a story that doesn't require a rigid chronology.

We have themes of aimlessness, wandering, and being at the whim of the wind, so I believe a better story would be one that flows from this.

We should still feel adrift at sea, and a strict chronology of playing these levels would undo this. I think defining the order of these levels would be a huge mistake.

As an example of a more fitting narrative structure, I would imagine that levels would fill in information about the past to answer questions. Again, I'll use my example of "why do we wander at the mercy of the wind?", but this doesn't have to be the question.

Answer this by giving us a piece of the puzzle of the past in this level, another piece of the puzzle in another - so it doesn't matter the order we play them in (we are adrift, remember), but in any order, we begin to slowly come to understand the nature of story in this wandering life.

Perhaps in one level we come to understand we had a sister, in one we learn have a tragedy in our past, in one we learn that we have a fear of water, and so on.

The story assembles itself no matter the order we play the levels in and we can still keep this "adrift" aesthetic.

Wow you really are full of fabulous ideas! Can't wait until your project is finished

I still feel like there should be a concluding level when ladylyn1 feels like bringing this level series to an end.

Lol, thank you very much

I still feel like there should be a concluding level when ladylyn1 feels like bringing this level series to an end.

Is it not more poetic to wander aimlessly forever?

I agree that the final level she creates for the series should be significant in whichever way he decides, and be a satisfactory "last brushstroke", but I don't think it should "end" in a conclusive sense.

lol thanks yeah that is the pronunciation! dont worry ive got used to it!

and some fantastic ideas! yeah come to think of it... i dont think editing the last levels will do that much to help the story along- instead i'll consider picking out certain points in them to focus on and build a story line around.

...Along with everything else Jagrevi said.

Aren't I insightful?

Really, though, I think Jagrevi nailed it. Also, I'll just quote myself from my comment on your 'red' level because it applies now:

Another thing I really like about this level, similar to the statement I mentioned previously, is the way the series itself is presented. It seems to me like a perfect series to milk and come back to again and again, just like a franchise. The style is distinctive, yet both levels still are original and unique. The balloon entry and exit serves as a very recognizable trademark, another important aspect in a series.

So yeah, I think it's great that you have plenty of time before you get to your ps3, because you can plan it out a bit more, and keep all these things in mind! I think your series could really become a classic

Wow thanks!

Well im starting now to plan the level. I've got the night off work so i'll think up some ideas and make a few drawings mainly (theme based) so the story line to the silver level should start taking shape.

As for the main story line... i'll be looking at the existing levels to see what i can use!

I think something that might be interesting ... so far the wind theme seems to generally been very calm.

For once, what about some *heavy* wind? Would it not be nice to encounter an ocean storm once in these levels? You can always create "actual" wind to blow things around simply by emitting invisibly "particles" of rubber.

If you haven't played the first A.I.R. level, it's worth searching out to see how the mechanic can be used - although the sequel suffers from some problems.

Although, on second thought, perhaps that would be better saved for when we have water.

You should put in broken/abandoned statues and the could break apart and that could make them into obstacles or some could be mechanical with moving arms etc. I was thinking maybe grey stone maybe? Could hint at abandoned ciivilisation/apocolypse?2009-11-01 18:42:00

You crash into a jungle and the balloon tears, so you must scour the jungle for something to repair it.

The level starts out before you land, where you make friends with some birds - who then end up helping you with platforming in some later section.

Your balloon is destroyed *completely* and you must make a new one entirely from scratch.

You meet a man made of yarn, but at the end of the level, one of his strings is caught in the balloon, and as you sail away he is slowly unraveled. (sad)

You sail past the atmosphere, towards the sun (somehow), the screen slowly gets brighter and brighter, and you die.

You're sailing through a canyon when suddenly a large boulder falls and blocks the wind - you'll need to remove it to get the wind to blow again.

You sail down into a giant hole in the ground that goes deeper, and deeper ... and deeper.

Your balloon's fire dies, so you must venture someplace exciting to retrieve fire.

Right im bringing this back up as for a project over the easter period... to keep me sane during revision.

As for the ideas, ive had plenty of time to think about them and im planning on taking this one much higher than any of the previous.... thats right, SPACE!

Im thinking of keeping it true to the other games... so platforming, puzzles and a boss to go with it.

Hopefully i will manage to get some drawings up soon, with theme concepts and puzzle ideas... for now, any ideas u've got would be awesome!

A solar wind balloon craft would be very suitable. If this is going to be in space, it would be good to be set in an icy barren section of space with mini planet and asteroids to explore.

I had an idea, this could be the first part of a new trilogy that is in different galaxies.
Silver=Icey
Orange=Burning
Purple=Crystalline

It would be nice to take a turn in the series like this. For a villain, you could have like in the story mode where the collector is hidden in the first 7 areas or is stealing something. He could be just hiding in the background.

ooooh this looks to be quite a level . i like the idea of the "spacepunk" design, rather than going for the futuristic look that people normally associate with space. i just finished reading a book by kenneth oppel called starclimber, which is kind of spacepunky. instead of a spacecraft, the mode of transport is in the form of a cable extending 1000s of miles into space, with an elevator on it. do post some pictures, cant wait to see what this looks like 2010-03-11 21:53:00
