Sponsored Contests
Archive: 40 posts
Hey guys! I just got an email from someone who represents a game accessories sales site, and they offered to sponsor some of our contests with prizes if we plug their site and promote them in the contests that they are sponsoring. Now, this sounds like a cool opportunity, but I wanted to know what you guys thought since you would ultimately be benefiting from it. I want to bring you guys as much fun as I can, but I don't want to transform our site into a walking advertisement either. I really don't want to alienate people, so I decided I'd ask. Share your opinion by voting in the poll and feel free to elaborate in the replies. Thanks! | 2009-10-20 15:15:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |
I personally think that it's a great opportunity for us and an even greater opportunity for the site. For us, I'm sure we will receive some great prizes, which will by all means make contests a lot more active and help expand the LBPCentral community. Beyond that, it will help expand the site. It will let other companies realize that it's a legit, and how awesome it truly is. Think of it as a spring board off to more awesomeness. My vote goes for yay! | 2009-10-20 15:26:00 Author: FULLGORR Posts: 245 |
I guess it depends on who spearheads the contests. Are you going to be required to take this on all by yourself? If so, how will they be formatted? I just wonder what the contests will be like and if they will garner enough attention. I show concern since many of the un-sponsored community contests have received only a handful of entries. Will people be more motivated given tangible rewards? I dunno. Also, it depends on what site it is. If they are some big name with a product of actual value, then it would be more appealing than some small time stuff. :/ Also, where would we see these ads? Surely they won't replace Google Ads. I voted yes, but the moment I get a popup or a popout ad, I will be very sad. | 2009-10-20 15:31:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
Wow... at first glance it sounds really cool, but I guess I have to caution against as you say turning into a walking ad site like {gasp} GameSpot or something. That part scares me a bit as I like the way this is a members site and not catering to other interests. If we could do it and insure that ads are limited in size and don't take over the site, that might be cool. However, I see that means agreeing with FULLGORR and that really scares me. LOL!! | 2009-10-20 15:33:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |
Judging by the wording of your poll choices, I am assuming that these "ads" would only appear in contest related threads that have sponsored by the advertisers? In this case my answer is yes. If it means site-wide advertising (as a site donor, I don't suffer any advertising currently) or an up-tick of said advertising, then I would vote no. I voted yes, but the moment I get a popup or a popout ad, I will be very sad. Exactly this. | 2009-10-20 15:34:00 Author: v0rtex Posts: 1878 |
I'm pretty much on the fence about this. It has its pros and its cons. Just a word of advice though, if you have to sign a contract or agreement, be very careful to read and understand the fine print. | 2009-10-20 15:37:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |
Just a word of advice though, if you have to sign a contract or agreement, be very careful to read and understand the fine print. Yes, this another concern. We'd hate for LBPC to get trapped into an unfair agreement. I'm hesitant to suggest getting tangled in with 3rd parties, but if you feel like it's an undertaking you can handle, then we trust you. If things went horribly wrong, we could always migrate to lbp_central.com. | 2009-10-20 15:39:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
I don't care about the ads aslong as they aren't annoying (big ads in lots of colors). Yes from me. | 2009-10-20 16:12:00 Author: oldage Posts: 2824 |
I'd like a sponsor for my contest xD. No I'm fine with this. | 2009-10-20 17:19:00 Author: Mod5.0 Posts: 1576 |
Sounds ok, but... What site is this? I think we should know before we make a decision. | 2009-10-20 17:41:00 Author: moleynator Posts: 2914 |
Everyone loves free stuff. Sounds good to me. Don't they have like, a preview for what kind of ads they would be putting on though? Other sites must have used it ya know. | 2009-10-20 19:13:00 Author: ChristmasJew Posts: 431 |
Sounds good, I don't mind some more advertisements. | 2009-10-20 19:17:00 Author: olit123 Posts: 1341 |
I like the idea, are you able to back out whenever you decide? | 2009-10-20 19:43:00 Author: Zwollie Posts: 2173 |
This sounds like a great opportunity to expand the site. However, I'm with the others, will the ads only be showing up in the certain contests they sponsor? Will they show up globally? Meaning, throughout the whole site? What kind of prizes are these? However I do think a lot more people (me for one) would join in on these contests, like ChristmasJew said, everyone loves free stuff. But I'd still like to know what we're getting here. Please, please, please pleasepleasepleaseplease! Read the contract (if any) or whatever will be used to come to an agreement with, read all the fine print/details and all that good stuff. I'd hate to see this site become filled with their ads with no way of us backing out for x number of years. So, I'll hold out on voting for now. | 2009-10-20 20:15:00 Author: Whalio Cappuccino Posts: 5250 |
So far there's no contract, just a friendly agreement. Regarding ad placement, we'd advertise their site in the contest itself and let everyone know who's providing the free stuff, and in return they provide the free stuff. They're also interested in an ad slot on our site. Depending on how much they're willing to pay, we may go through with that as well. If we do, it would be an exclusive ad slot, and it would likely replace one of the ad slots that are currently filled. I've contacted them for more information. I'll let everyone know when I know more. | 2009-10-20 20:23:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |

I voted yes... sounds interesting. Plus, we can always use more contests... And this'd give an excuse for more O-o | 2009-10-20 20:39:00 Author: RockSauron Posts: 10882 |
This sounds like a fantastic idea, and from the results of the poll, that's a resounding yes from the rest of the community as well. | 2009-10-20 21:14:00 Author: BSprague Posts: 2325 |

100% of people said yes. And the way you said it, I'm completely fine with that! | 2009-10-20 23:15:00 Author: KlawwTheClown Posts: 1106 |
sounds like a win to me. | 2009-10-20 23:16:00 Author: Morgana25 Posts: 5983 |
100% of people said yes. And the way you said it, I'm completely fine with that! I would have voted No to be a dissenting voice, but CC's followup explanation makes it seem like it's a fair deal. So I voted Yes instead. | 2009-10-21 00:04:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |
I voted yes but like others urge you to be careful too and know what you're letting yourself in for first. Would be cool to have a chance to win stuff though. The only thing I'm worried about though is where this company is based. If as I suspect it's America then I'm guessing the 'accessories' or whatever the prizes may be wouldn't be any use to us Europeans. Is that the case ?? | 2009-10-21 00:11:00 Author: mistervista Posts: 2210 |
I just hope this isn't some, " Buy one get one free thing". You know? I mean pop-ups, advertisement, and so on. If it gets out of hand, then I want no part of it. So I say yes, but CC better watch out for this company. We still don't know if there like the "car salesmen" type of people. | 2009-10-21 01:51:00 Author: CyberSora Posts: 5551 |
I say go for it. | 2009-10-21 03:45:00 Author: Frinklebumper Posts: 941 |
sounds like a great idea for the site but then again it doesn't | 2009-10-23 03:38:00 Author: siccology Posts: 279 |
Judging by the contest you posted I think everyone's qualms can be put to rest, there isn't even a banner ad in there. Looks like a win scenario for everyone involved | 2009-10-23 09:50:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |

Looks like a win scenario for everyone involved True story. 100% Yes out of 50 votes sounds like a green light to me! I think it sounds like a great idea. The XP on this site is a cool way to provide rewards for contests, but being able to win an actual game or accessory or some such would be very cool indeed. If you can get sponsors that are willing to pony up for some decent prizes, it'd be a fantastic way to get a whole bunch of entries on some of the contests. I think Morgana's current Halloween contest would have benefitted greatly from a bit of sponsor love. It's a "large" contest, with a month-long deadline and a call to create a full level. A cool, tangible reward would get a ton more entries, not to mention competitive ones - and that means more cool halloween levels for me to play. So, in the end, for perfectly selfish reasons, I say do it. | 2009-10-23 11:04:00 Author: Teebonesy Posts: 1937 |
I'd say yes, as long as its not pop ups because I feel there is plenty of space left for adds to be unobtrusive. | 2009-10-23 16:16:00 Author: adlingtont Posts: 321 |
Judging by the contest you posted I.E: THis has already happened. Go haz a looksee in site contests forum | 2009-10-23 16:26:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
Awesome, I think it would be most beneficial to both parties. | 2009-10-26 16:28:00 Author: enodrawkcab Posts: 238 |
I just recieved an e-mail from 'train2game', I don't know why I was sent this - but when I came onto LBPC I saw an advert for the same exact same company, talking about the exact same thing as it did in the e-mail. Is this pure co-incidence or does this whole sponsor thing mean we'll start receiving spam e-mails too? I hope not... | 2009-11-04 20:22:00 Author: Leather-Monkey Posts: 2266 |

Thank you very much for asking us CC And the money would help pay for the site monthly as it costs money i believe. So i guess its good if the ads stay on the homepage and at the top and bottom of the screen how they are now | 2009-11-17 23:06:00 Author: Snrm Posts: 6419 |
yeah i don't mind too much | 2009-11-20 04:52:00 Author: rseah Posts: 2701 |
This sounds like a brilliant oppertunity for the site and it's users, and of course freebies are always a bonus. | 2009-11-29 17:32:00 Author: Unknown User |
considering the fact we've already HAD a sponsored contest and it seems to be absolute... shouldn't we lock this or are you still looking for opinions? O-o | 2009-11-29 17:49:00 Author: RockSauron Posts: 10882 |
I had hoped it would eventually die on its own, but since it hasn't - locked. | 2009-11-29 17:50:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |
