New Graphics Card - Which/how/why?

Archive: 9 posts

So I got my laptop about 6 months ago, and have installed a few games on it, running on the in-built video card. That is, an intel 4, not the best, eh? Spore runs with heavy lag in detailed parts, TES: IV Oblivion with Oldblivion (effectively knocking the graphics back by a year or so) runs with lag, heavy lag in high-effect areas like fire, and Fallout 3 doesn't load at all.

So I want to get a new video card.

How should I go about this? Pay someone to install it? Who?

How much should I pay? I'm thinking 40-50 pounds sterling.

Which card should I get to run these games.

Cheers dawes

For a laptop, it's going to be nigh-impossible to get a new graphics card. Quite simply: laptops weren't meant for gaming or modding (adding aftermarket graphics/sound cards, etc.) and as such it's going to be quite hard to find a graphics card for one. If you had a desktop, it would be a much different story. As it stands, I don't think you'll have much luck. Sorry.

Also, if you somehow manage to find a new graphics card, install it yourself. It'll take like 20 minutes, save you some cash, and make you seem cooler to your nerd friends. But, seriously, do it yourself. It's not hard at all.

this, most laptops (no, around 99%) have an integrated GPU, it'll be impossible on most to put in a new GPU. desktop is the way to go if you want to game.

The guys above beat me to it.
Basically, I used to be in your situation (with the same power PC by the sounds of it) and I moved to a desktop PC for my gaming/high cpu and gpu computing. I keep my laptop for on the go stuff now. Mind you... the desktop did set me back nearly ?900... but that's cause I nearly all the latest stuff lol >.>

For 500 you could still get a great gaming PC.

Oh OK, oh well. I'll try installing Fallout 3 on my PC later, but, to be honest, my laptop can perform better than my PC in some respects xD2009-10-19 22:00:00

I'm pretty sure you can easily upgrade most laptops these days, laptops seem to becoming increasingly more popular for gaming.

I'd still only recommend upgrading your desktop instead though.
Desktops are multiple times more reliable than laptops, and cramming more powerful hardware into your laptop will only make it more likely that something will go wrong.

Gaming on desktops is generally considered to be a lot easier, and you wouldn't want to spend 100s on new hardware to have your laptop break on you

Haha, Fallout 3 doesn't even run on my computer! It ran FINE on both of my BROTHERS' laptops...Grumble...

Unfortunately, my mum thinks I'm becoming to much of a computer addict, so there's no WAY she'd let me get a new laptop. Not for...two years?
