Beta Summary - Few more details..

Lots of activity on the LittleBigPlanet Beta, with a certainty of more to come.

The first pieces of solid info came from the Japanese PlayStation sites, which told us a fair bit (anyone with better Japanese skills, feel free to correct me):

1. Japanese PSN users can download a Beta “ticket” application to apply for the Beta.

2. (In Japan, at least) The Beta application period is from Sept 17-23, and the Beta period is from Sept 29 to Oct 12th.

3. Japan, Europe, and North America will each have 20,000 Beta participants.

4. The Beta test consists of the first set of levels (the English Gardens), as well as Create mode and sharing levels (I think).

5. The Beta version will take up 950MB on the HDD.

Glad to see some regional diversity in the Beta, but another interesting thing is the limited Story mode. I don’t know if this was to keep the download under a gigabyte, or to diminish the sense of the Beta being a free demo of the whole game. It may seem like a bummer to only get the “easy” early levels; but there’s at least one side level in there that I found incredibly challenging.

Of course the European and North American fans thought we’d see a similar download ticket, but none appeared during the PSN Store update. Sam warned us that there might be a different Beta selection method, and one seems to have materialized:
Over in Portugal, the website GameOver has 90 Beta codes to give out to fans who email them confirming their desire to play (oddly enough, they state a Beta start date of Sept 24th).
French site jeuxvideo.com says they have 750 Beta codes to give away (and that the Beta starts Sept 22nd?).
Here in the States, about 57 minutes into IGN’s Podcast Beyond episode 60, they talk about giving away a number of LittleBigPlanet Beta codes when people email in their creation ideas; but we’ll have to wait for the details of the contest later this week.

Looks like a staggered Beta period in Europe and North America, with access targeted at fans who follow popular gaming websites. This seems as good a method as any. Here’s hoping they get any and all server problems solved before the launch.

I think you'll find there's severely less then that amount, if you think about it..

& I hardly think they're gonna give us enough tickets to satisfy our active members, seeing as half of them aren't active..

Heh, that would be cool if that's what the register is for. They should give the fansites many many tickets so that non-notable people such as myself who don't visit many gaming websites will have a better chance of getting in on the beta :kz:2008-09-21 16:28:00

I sort of want to be in the beta but sort of not because I think it will ruin buying littlebigplanet because I was planning on buying Socom: Confrontation but I got the beta and it has made me not want to buy the game because I have all ready played it2008-09-21 17:27:00

Interesting, I've never seen such methods before.

E-mailing your own creation idea's for a chance for a beta or giving them out to fansites.

Yeah, we registered. I'll let everyone know when/if we hear back from them. This doesn't guarantee beta codes, so don't expect it. We're preparing for the chance that we do get beta codes, but that doesn't mean it's going to happen.		2008-09-21 19:05:00

We're more popular than any other LBP fan forum, actually. We have way more members and way more active members than any other site. Plus, Media Molecule thought we were big enough to give us an interview with their co-founder, something no other forum has even gotten close to. If they are going to hand out beta codes to fansites, I'd be very surprised if we didn't get any.		2008-09-21 19:15:00

If you think about it, with 20,000 US codes, and 20,000 EU codes, they've got a lot to give away.. And fansites are the ideal places / people to give them to, because you know they want to play the game.2008-09-21 20:29:00

Exactly, if you're Mm or Sony and you want to be SURE the people in the Beta will not only play it but also give feedback, this is a sure-fire way of attaining that.		2008-09-21 22:51:00

I don't know. It is sort of hard to choose because if you pick one way, just say posts, and someone doesn't post that much but is one the site a lot, they would probably get mad. Of course, us being chosen for a beta giveaway has the same amount of chance as the Hadron Collider destroying the world....for all things to be fair for LBP fans fansites are least likely to be picked to not show favortism among fansites....


with that considered, it would of probably been a good strategy for us to not have registered in fansite lists.... of course it could be the list is for the beta giveaway... it could go either way...		2008-09-22 01:51:00

We've considered that option, but it creates another problem: what do we do with the people who weren't online at the time we made them available? Should they be exempt because they didn't sign on and look?

We're also considering giving them out randomly, as that is really the most fair way I can think of handing them out.

(now, for anyone new to this thread, make sure you remember that nothing is certain; it's very possible that they haven't even considered giving the codes out to fansites, and we're just getting way ahead of ourselves)		2008-09-22 02:11:00

We've already decided we will offer the first ones to the site staff, if they want one. The remainder will go to the members we feel deserve it, and if there's any left, probably as a random drawing.		2008-09-22 02:27:00

I agree with the second option, actually. The only problem is we'd have to sacrifice timeliness for fairness; e.g. you'd have to wait until a day or two after we get the beta codes before you'd get one, if you manage to. That could mean less time with the beta for our members.

EDIT: Also, how would we deal with the separate betas? That seems like a problem. Since there is a separate limit for the UK and the US, separate codes would probably have to be handed out for each region. Since we're a split forum when it comes to region, that would make this whole process a lot harder.		2008-09-22 03:01:00

Thinking about it, I believe (if this does turn out the be the way they are doing it) that we will get like 100 codes. Maybe split 2/3 for European and american codes. There is more Americans on this site isn't there?

It's just they have 20 000 codes for Europe alone. That is a alot, considering how many fansites are out there. Or maybe I have misjudged it all, and thats not alot. But it seems like a heck of a lot to me and not forgetting the other 20 000! 		2008-09-22 11:25:00
