Creating Editable Invisible Material In Seconds



It's invisible at any size.
Move it to any layer, thin or thick, any length.
Its as easy to edit as any other material.
It still has the properties of the material you make it. As metal it's heavy and as sponge it's still grabbable.




How to make invisible material:


1): Make a square shape of any material, and shrink it until it becomes invisible. Dark matter is best at this stage, because you can always change the material later.
2): Shrink it until it becomes invisible. If you can't shrink it any more, rotate it a little and you'll be able to.
3): Smear it on top of itself (ie: copy and paste) until it is visible again.
4): Then shrink it again until it becomes invisible again. This time you'll notice it'll be a bit bigger.
5): Continue to repeat steps 3-4. Each time you smear, and then shrink it, the limit to how big it can be while still being invisible will become greater.
6): Once you have it at a huge size you will never need, shrink it down to the size you want it. You can change the square shape to any shape you want through copying and pasting, the corner editor, or cutting and cleaning.



Uses For Invisible Material:



Invisible hazards that don't disrupt the beauty of a level.
Background material that you can use to glue and connect objects to easily.
Invisible shapes to attach connectors to.
Invisible barriers that prevent layer-shifting.



Special Notes:



Stickers do not appear on invisible material, but decorations do.
To change the material, you must resize the material until it's big enough to see again, but you can shrink it down after that. The same applies for invisible hazards.
To add switches, tools, and decorations, you must make the material big so it becomes visible again, add any of them, then make the material smaller again. Decorations sometimes become distorted.
Invisible material must be box selected, but if you glue a small material square to it, you can use that as a shortcut by selecting the square.
Different materials take different amounts of method repetition. Dark matter takes less repetitions than most other materials, such as cardboard. This is why changing the material can sometimes change the visibility too.

Ya, I'm pretty sure it has to be box selected but I don't know how that would be much of a problem. To be innovative you could probably glue a visible material to a far-off edge of your invisible material and just select that 2009-10-18 03:59:00

But I've got a different way of doing it that requires you to go to play my level and collect my object. And it's less customisable. Surely my way is better, no?

...Can't you just draw a line of invisible dark matter, smear it until the dark matter is "sharp", and then change it to any other material to make it invisible?

tis is pretty complicated and hard to understand so prehaps you might make a video or ask someone to make it for you of you doing it so people can actually see what is happening this could be very useful.

ps. the rotating and scaling tip is very useful i figured this out the other day when trying to make a custom item smaller but for people who dodn't know this thanks a lot

@KernelM: Jesus, lol. Invisible strips of dark matter are laggy, ungrabbable except for huge lengths, and extremely inconvenient.

Hello, me again with a quick tip. If you use a shape other than a square such as pentagon, hexagon, or octagon to make the small invisible line, the first square will be invisible at a larger size than if you use a square to make the invisible line, which will cut down on the repetition a bit.

Also, another use for these is to make a large thin panel to prevent people from switching planes, which allows you to keep them out of places they are not supposed to be.

Zettla, if you smear it vertically and horizontally a few times (go big), you can make a gigantic one in about 4 steps. Just capture it and you are done. I made it today and the tedium is pretty minimal.

This is great stuff. I didn't know this was possible, but definitely useful for trying to keep sackboy from being able to jump on background scenery.

I might just have a use for this in my new level.

I have some very useful information:
When you perform this technique, use pink floaty. When you shape it around how you want, you can still see it. Then change it to a different material to make it invisible when you are done.

Really? Are You sure it's visible at any size? Because Dark Matter turns invisible easily, while cardboard takes a few extra repetitions, etc.

If you can confirm it, that's awesome!

Sorry, I missed that. You have to make the material big to make it visible again, add any switches or tools, and then make it small again.

Pink and peach floaty seem to require more shrinking to turn invisible than most other materials, so that would indeed be an effective way of editing an invisible shape.

Another trick I've found when you want to add switches or emitters or something is to make a small square of the same material, stick the switch to it, click L3 to copy it and then paste it into the invisible material. It'll fuse into it and turn invisible and the switch will now be on your invisible object. Haven't tried it with decos, but I'm betting it wouldn't work.
