Cool Hologram-type Optical Illusion

Archive: 29 posts

Hi all

Just thought I'd share some of what I've been working on.

Not sure what this effect is called but check this out....

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j120/richergraphics/test.png

Look at the image and then focus past it.. in the distance (not cross eyed...you may find it easier to focus on something in the background and then move your eyes to the screen.

When you get it right, you will see 3 images next to each other, but the one in the middle is 3D! It actually is 3 dimensional!!

Another trick is to try to get the black dot inside the yellow circle.

I've only got it to work with small images so far.. can everyone else see it?

WOW yeah I got it to work.

I can't usually do these 3d things but after looking at it (well, straight through it) for a while I could then study the middle one clearly and it had depth

Well done

Yeah - looking through it is a good way to describe it.

I would also recommend you stay about 2 foot away from the screen to start with.

I might try some others...

I can see four of them, do I win something for that!

I can actually see the third image but can't see the 3Dness, it just appears as if the whole rectangle with the image in it is about 2 inches in front of my laptop!

woah - yea - I got it to work. That's so weird and cool! Couldn't stare too long - caused some quick eye strain but yea, the middle one is very deep an has a 3d effect to it. Really neat!2009-10-17 03:28:00

Brilliant - I'm glad other peeps can see it too.

It was created using DAZ Studio with two renders from different angles on the same model. The just PS CS3 to place them next to each other.

I used to do magic eye effects, but I didn't know if this would work until I tried it - that's why the effect doesn't have a name!

I just simply thought if I could trick the brain into thinking it was the same image, it might interpret it in 3D... and it did!!

Might do a more complex one now...

Sorry Rhy, I just can't seem to see the third one at all!
Like Icey I can see four but that is because I'm going cross eyed, I think.
I will keep trying, but will have to leave it for now as my eyeballs have dried out with all the staring!!

I've known about this for a while. It works in exactly the way the human eye works - essentially by focussing past the image, you're focussing your left eye on the left image and the right eye on the right image. Your brain then puts them together to form one complete image - just like how, when looking at the world, your left eye sees one thing and your right eye another.

If someone posts ANY image up on here, I can try converting it to this 3D effect. I mean ANY image - any single image, say, of a person. There's a trick you can do, it doesn't work nearly as well has Rhyfelwr's render, but it goes some way to working.

Here's an example:

Thanks Dawsbr. I could see your one and obama does stand out, but this is a bit harder on the eyes because they are further apart. I also noticed that this is just a background/foreground shift... which is cheating!

I wanted to take this a step further by making the entire image multi-dimensional.

I also guess this would work well with animation...

For me it just looks like one big genetic experiment with 2/12 heads and body parts.2009-10-17 20:32:00

Rhfelwyr, I did move Obama to the right slightly, but I also changed the lighting slightly individually on the background, his hand, and his body. The arm was impossible to make look sticky out because it's all black, but I figure it looks all right. The basic technique without the movement of the focus works fine with some pictures, and I have had a few where it looks fully 3D.2009-10-17 21:35:00

Cool.

Just done a "difference" layer comparison on each and see what you mean - good work considering its just on a flat image. I'd like to see any more you've done

Mrs V - just seen your post - glad you could make it to the party!

Rhy, I haven't got any more done. They take only a few minutes to make a basic one, I made that one in 10 minutes (the moving of Obama took 8).2009-10-17 22:44:00

I've seen tons of these. They're cool. Even cooler stuff.... when i was little I used to have a few books on weird 3D images called magic eye. Same principal... cross your eyes a bit and see a hidden image. Here's a few examples i quickly grabbed from google... self tested and working:

Magic eye ones are far more complex as they have a positive 3D effect and a negative one each side to get rid of the "hole" created by each image.

The first part is simple - create a high density pattern out of... erm... anything.

Then overlay a shape, copy and paste slightly to the right or left, with another in the opposite direction - doesn't need much. However, when you do it like this, you are left with shadow images that are far more complex to get rid of - I never sussed it.

In addition, the magic eye ones are multi-layed and they use algorythms to work it out.

However, this is not the effect I was trying to achieve. My images are complete textured models which look "real".
