Need inspiration to think up a good level name?

So, you've made a masterpiece, but your stuck for a name? Frustration and impatience wins and you publish your level with a generic description and wait for your praise. It doesn't come. Factoid : No matter how great a level might be, the trio of icon, title and description HAS to do ALL the legwork to reel in the punters. Now, nearly all of you will know this, and nearly all of you will also know; Factoid : The icon and description rely on the title to set the tone. Not everyone here has an 1st in an english language degree and so choosing colourful words doesn't always come naturally. (I know I don't ) So, without further ado may I reintroduce you to your new best friend, the thesaurus! http://thesaurus.reference.com/ As the runty little cousin of the Dictionary, this guy will help you out with all your synonym needs! Examples: Your level has a very bomb heavy theme but Instead of Bomb try words like ; Explode, Device, Grenade, Mine, Shell, Fragmentation, Blast, Blitz, Bombard, Destroy, Prang, Raid, Destruction, Rake, Raze ... etc Your level is a one life race jobby, however Instead of Race try words like ; Chase, Clash, Competition, Contention, Contest, Course, Dash, Engagement, Event, Go, Marathon, Match, Rally, Relay, Rivalry, Run, Rush, Scurry, Sprint, Scamper, Hustle, Scuttle, Skim, Whisk ... etc Your level has a scary feel to it but the word scary doesn't seem to fit anywhere, therefore Instead of Scary try words like ; Fear, Revulsion, Ahorrence, Abomination, Alarm, Antipathy, Chiller, Detestation, Disguest, Dismay, Dread, Fright, Hatred, Monstrosity, Panic, Terror, Trepidation, Enmity, Malice, Odium ... etc My most recent level went through this process and came out with quite a 'doody' name, if I do say so myself. It's a race level that takes place entirely in the clouds on floating rocket platforms. I used this thesaurus and searched the words 'Air' and 'Event' and it came back with Aerostation and Project. I added my own futuristic flair and my latest level is called The 2026 Aerostation Project. Wouldn't you agree that sounds a hella' lot more interesting that 'Sky race' or 'Cloud run'? I hope this helps anyone that needs it and lets see some interesting titles come our way soon! | 2009-10-16 20:09:00 Author: Asbestos101 Posts: 1114 |
I'm definitely going to republish my new level with a new name and description now. I spent forever on a sick jetpack maze level, and stupid me named it JETPACK MAZE hahahaha. No hearts and not even 30 plays isn't what i expected to get back. | 2009-10-17 21:34:00 Author: Meta-Armor Posts: 80 |
Luckily enough, I've never run across the problem of not being able to come up with a nice level name. I know, however, how difficult it can be, and this tutorial provides some nice guidelines. It is definitely expandable (and it would be very nice to see some future updates on your posting!), but it is a helpful guide nonetheless. Good work! | 2009-10-18 00:01:00 Author: Treas Posts: 223 |
Great post just wanted u to know that ur post has totally changed the name of my current level project! I thought I was cursed since Im pretty much remaking my first level and wanted people to know that I took the feedback and made a whole new level out of it. But then I thought(after reading this) why? This is new and should be treated like a new modern wonder and not a rehash of something that failed me in the past... anyway ur right! Be creative and use words that dont get used as often and u wont get lost in all the similar titles out there that already have left a bad taste in players mouths so thanks for the idea and again... great post! | 2009-10-18 00:21:00 Author: tru3_skitz0 Posts: 114 |

Obviously, for maximum effect, think of two or three words that adequately describe your level and then thesaurus the bejesus out of them. More colourful examples: For canyon themed levels, rather than the word desert.. Sahara, arid, badland, barren, flats, lava bed, sand dunes, solitude, wild/s, wilderness, bare, desolate, infertile (might raise a few eyebrows, lol), lonely, solitary, uninhabited, unproductive, untilled, waste, wild, godforsaken, empty.. etc For robot themed levels, rather than the word robot.. android, machine, automation, bionic person, cyborg, mechanical person, appliance, automobile, computer, contraption, contrivance, engine, gadget, mechanism, motor, thingamabob, tool, vehicle, widget agent, clone, drudge, grind, laborer, mechanical, puppet, zombie (both words historically mean more or less the same thing).. So, for a level where you fight robots in the desert, here are some names that you could use; Killer Computers in the Barren Wastes Badland Cyborgs Wilderness Agents Lonely Mechanical Clones Mechanical Puppets from the Desolate Wilds Automated Arid Assassins Feel free to use any of those, i'm not going to be making a canyon/robot mashup level any time soon and it'd be a shame to let those golden titles get away | 2009-10-18 15:18:00 Author: Asbestos101 Posts: 1114 |
Good advice. The thesaurus is your friend, I've been using them like this for years. Now let me get back to my brilliant new level, Blitz Hustle of Malice! | 2009-10-19 14:00:00 Author: Rogar Posts: 2284 |
Good advice. The thesaurus is your friend, I've been using them like this for years. Now let me get back to my brilliant new level, Blitz Hustle of Malice! I think a lot of people forget about the thesaurus, he's the runty kid that hangs around with the popular kids like the Dylan Dictonary and Eddie Encyclopedia. | 2009-10-19 20:07:00 Author: Asbestos101 Posts: 1114 |
