How do you create flashing lights?

Archive: 6 posts

Hi, I looked through the forums for quite some time to find a way to create flashing lights and although I haven't experimented around with it as much as I should of, I'm looking for a simple way to create a flashing light in a small space.

I'm also looking for a way to make a "would be" flashing light turn on by a triggered event (so possibly by a switch thrown by a LBP player). Is this an emitter trick... any help would be appreciated.

I made a quick pic for you. This is how I get the lights to flash.
So as the piston goes back and forth it turns the light on and off depending if it's in the zone or not

If you wanted to turn it on by a switch then you could have a mag switch attached to the piston. Have it set to inverted so that the piston doesn't move. Then have a mag key in the switches radius (on a piece of dissolve). Then have the switch that you want to activate the light with attached to the dissolve so that when the switch is activated it dissolves the dissolve material (making the mag key go away) and the piston will then go back and forth. This will happen permanently then. You can have it so you can turn it off and on with a switch, but I'm late for work lol so if you need that I'll sort something out for you later

If you want a broken light with irregular pattern you can do it like this:

You can also use a wheel with a few magnetic keys and one static magnetic switch. But it's harder to connect to switch that will shut the light down.
BTW. You don't have to use rubber, I use it for some random reason in all my logic.

Or, Alternatively, you could do this..

The wood material has a motor bolt which allows it to spin around and whichever pace you want it to.. As the Key Switch moves near the Key, the light turns on..

Feloneouscat has a good flickering lights tech demo.

To modify his design to have an on/off facility, you can place the magnetic key on a piston, set to backwards. Attach a directional signal to that, and when you activate the directional signal, the magnetic switch moves close to the wheel and starts outputting flickers. Deactivating the switch will move the magnetic switch away and it will stop being activated.

Thanks guys, I ended up just capturing a fairy light of a specific colour and using an emitter to project that light every 2 seconds, the lifetime is then set to 1.5 seconds and this is all happening in a cut out window behind a grate like window cover with a tilted camera angle to play to the theme of the level which helps to hide anyone from ever seeing the emitted light, it was the most simple solution to a minor detail in my level.2009-10-18 06:05:00
