Download or UMD?
Archive: 41 posts
I have recently bought a 16 gb memory stick for my PSP-2000, so I could download games and get UMDs. I wanted to download LBP PSP, but now I am not so sure. On one hand, if I download it I will have multiple copies so I can share it with other PSP users in my family without having to give up my copy, it will use less battery power on my PSP so I can play it longer, it would load faster then a UMD, it cannot get scratched like a UMD, and the last Sack it to Me said that there will be something special for downloaders. But if I get the UMD I will get the pre-order costumes free, and I get a physical copy of the game, instructions, and the box, which is always nice. I can't decide what to do. So maybe by seeing what you would do will help me decide. My question is: Will you download the game from the PlayStation Store or get the UMD and why? | 2009-10-16 01:11:00 Author: Darth J464 Posts: 343 |
Oh i finally see the mention of the download special, my guess it'll be the same or both specials will eventually be available on the store in the future. As for me i wanted to get the download version, so i can have it on my stick and still be able to put something in the UMD, but i saw the pre-order bonus (didn't notice the mention of something special for digital downloaders) so i pre-ordered at gamestop couple days back...oh well, if worst comes to happen i'll cancel my pre-order all i can do is wait and see what it is | 2009-10-16 02:11:00 Author: JKthree Posts: 1125 |

Will you download the game from the PlayStation Store or get the UMD and why?Download. Although the UMD version of the game has advantages (buy and sell used, lend, trade, etc.), I will be downloading this from PSN for several reasons: I don't ever plan on selling this game, so a hard copy is not necessary. I am by no means a pack rat, but I do tend to hang on to remarkable games and series of which I am a fan (e.g., Gran Turismo, Oddworld, Metal Gear Solid, etc.). I will probably buy a used version of the UMD later down the road for posterity. I have two PSPs, so I will be able to use this game on both systems simultaneously - something a UMD can't do. (Yes, I can confirm that this will work because I am doing this currently with Gran Turismo PSP. If both PSPs are registered to your PSN account you're good to go.) This means I will be able to play LBP ad hoc multiplayer with my lame friends who *still* don't own a single PSP among the whole lot of them. Not having to tote around a stack of UMDs is fantastic. Having well over two dozen of my favorite games loaded onto my PSP Go all at once is so cool it should be illegal. | 2009-10-19 03:27:00 Author: Taffey Posts: 3187 |

LBP PSP won't have multiplayer unfortunately You can still Level Share though. | 2009-10-22 00:32:00 Author: Darth J464 Posts: 343 |
You can still Level Share though. Exactly. I'm also keeping my fingers crossed for the ability to share and/or gift objects and stickers. | 2009-10-22 01:06:00 Author: Taffey Posts: 3187 |
I don't have a PSP, and don't plan on getting one, but if I did, Digital, ALL THE WAY. No need for UMD cases. BTW I would get a PSP 3000 or whatever instead of the Go because its cheaper and can handle digital downloads. | 2009-10-24 04:46:00 Author: chezhead Posts: 1063 |
Download, definately. If I did get the UMD I'd just rip the ISO anyway, digital is a lot better. And the analogue nub on my phat has been broken for god knows how long, so I'd have to use my Go anyway. I mean seriously, get a PSPgo. | 2009-10-24 17:12:00 Author: ARD Posts: 4291 |
I would go for the Download. Because you can share copies. And that alone can costs 100$ if you have alot of PSP or knows people with PSP's. Heck why don't you sell them a copy half the price? | 2009-10-25 16:22:00 Author: Count Posts: 315 |
I'm downloading it to my newly acquired 3000 for 2 main reasons; load times and battery life. The UMD negatively affects both. Which are, to me, two of the most important things on a handheld. I don't want my battery to die while I'm out and about, nor do I want to wait as long for things to load when I'm playing it on the bus for 15 minutes. | 2009-10-25 20:03:00 Author: FULLGORR Posts: 245 |
download, otherwise I'd have to buy two copies, one for me and one for my brother. | 2009-10-26 21:42:00 Author: oldage Posts: 2824 |
Wow. Sounds like everyone will be downloading. | 2009-10-26 22:37:00 Author: Darth J464 Posts: 343 |
I'll guess that load and save times will be shorter on the download version as well. For example, the UMD version of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars takes 10-15 seconds to save while the download version is only about 1 second. Huge difference. | 2009-10-26 22:44:00 Author: Taffey Posts: 3187 |

Lol, yeah, that exact same fact is what decided it for me too. I heard it takes around 17 seconds to save with the UMD and it's only about 1 or 2 with the download... I couldn't imagine how long saving a level would take in the UMD version. | 2009-10-27 19:41:00 Author: FULLGORR Posts: 245 |
for me it's always a good thing to have a hard copy. what if your memory card or HDD corrupted and lose your games? i guess you can download again but it's a pain. i like seeing my games on the shelf. | 2009-11-02 10:48:00 Author: yuukun_uk Posts: 8 |
I'm getting it, and all my other PSP games on UMD. don't really play it much tbh and since I can buy UMDs elsewhere for half the price sony are charging in the store, the benefits of dl are offset by the cost. | 2009-11-02 11:57:00 Author: Matt 82 Posts: 1096 |
Yeah, but since I will be using multiple copies, Sony's price is the cheapest out there. And every once and a while I download everything on my memory stick to my computer so my saves won't get corrupted. Also, downloading with Media Go is very fast. | 2009-11-03 21:12:00 Author: Darth J464 Posts: 343 |
i'm probably gonna cancel my pre-order at amazon, because if i download it, i can get it the minute it comes out! | 2009-11-13 01:36:00 Author: pebble Posts: 14 |
Well, they announced that pre-order costumes will be given to downloaders for the first two weeks, so I guess I will download. | 2009-11-13 01:45:00 Author: Darth J464 Posts: 343 |
Yeah I cancelled my pre-order at gamestop when I saw that the DL bonus is the same. How do you think this will work for Downloaders? the bonus content? Do we just get a seperate file containing the bonus costumes, or will the file be just a little bit bigger than usual. Oh By the way I found out the File size is 1.2 GB | 2009-11-13 02:06:00 Author: JKthree Posts: 1125 |
They did the exact same thing for GT PSP - special preorder bonuses for various major retailers as well as for PSN downloaders. In all cases the bonuses were expensive and/or hard to find high-end cars in special colors. When you preordered a UMD you received a voucher code that, when entered into PSN, allowed you to download a game add-on file. When you pre-ordered the game from PSN (like I did) you were supposed to automatically have the add-on file added to your download list, but this was not the case. It turned out to be a major screw-up, and Sony had to have everyone that downloaded the game in the first few days call customer service and open a problem ticket. Voucher codes were individually sent via PSN message up to a week from the ticket submission date. GT PSP was also removed from the PSN storefront for a week presumably while they fixed the problem. Hopefully Sony has figured out how to avoid this issue going forward. Regardless of the goof, they made good on their promise and fixed the problem for me, so I'm happy. Very good customer service. | 2009-11-13 02:19:00 Author: Taffey Posts: 3187 |

Ouch, well I'll probably ask around the night its up on the store to see if there's no problems this time, before i download mine. | 2009-11-13 02:29:00 Author: JKthree Posts: 1125 |
Even if they do have problems, it's not going to stop me from downloading the game within the first 60 seconds it hits the store. If there's issues I know they'll be fixed eventually. | 2009-11-13 02:34:00 Author: Taffey Posts: 3187 |
Honest response. I have the umd version right now and I suggest getting the downloaded version because the load times a pretty **** rough for the umd. | 2009-11-13 07:16:00 Author: gevurah22 Posts: 1476 |
Darned, really? I was thinking of getting the UMD version to have the box and manual, but if the load times are really that much longer than the downloadable version... I guess I'll have to invest in a bigger memstick. Edit: Do you think you could figure out exactly how long the loading times are? I'd like to compare it to some other UMD games I have, to get a proper comparison. | 2009-11-13 11:18:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |
I'm going to get the UMD......just because I only have the PSP phat But I wouldn't trade it for the world | 2009-11-14 20:50:00 Author: Coxy224 Posts: 2645 |
I downloaded a UMD I will definitely buy it from the store as soon as it's officially released though. | 2009-11-14 20:52:00 Author: ARD Posts: 4291 |

I'm going to download LBP PSP from the PS Store. I want levels to load quickly, and i don't want my battery to die on me while i'm enjoying the game. But theres a chance i might not be able to buy it when it comes out, because i'm a bit tight on money. Also, donkey show, what is your estimation on the UMD load times? | 2009-11-15 06:39:00 Author: Black265 Posts: 208 |
I'm going for a UMD.... I just like the idea that I have a physical copy of the game. | 2009-11-15 15:04:00 Author: mnimmo1986 Posts: 552 |

About 25 secs to load up a level, give or take. Same with restarting. Rewinding and fowarding in create mode is about .5 to 1 secs long. | 2009-11-16 00:30:00 Author: gevurah22 Posts: 1476 |

Yup, I posted that awhile back on my impressions thread... because that's me giving the walkthrough. =P http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhwum_tVg0c And no, I didn't get it through Wal-Mart (it's legit though, I am no pirate, lol). | 2009-11-16 04:03:00 Author: gevurah22 Posts: 1476 |
Didn't you get it at that level design competition? Or earlier? | 2009-11-16 05:19:00 Author: Theap Pleman Posts: 670 |
At the competition. | 2009-11-16 05:43:00 Author: gevurah22 Posts: 1476 |

I'm buying LBP PSP from the PS Store, and i hope it will be a great game. I have some decent games for my PSP, but LBP PSP might become the best game i ever bought for my PSP. | 2009-11-16 06:36:00 Author: Black265 Posts: 208 |
I'm buying a PSP Go for christmas, so i'll be downloading it... | 2009-11-17 14:22:00 Author: Unknown User |
I'm going to download, but it is because I don't have much of a choice right now since I am out of the country. If I was in the US right now, I might have cracked and bought the UMD by now just because I want the game so bad, but since I have no choice, I am downloading it anyway. If you are patient enough for PSN to post it, I would download it | 2009-11-18 10:31:00 Author: amazingflyingpoo Posts: 1515 |
Gah!! It is taking for ever for it to release on the PS Store. Now I am regretting my decision to download it. | 2009-11-18 23:30:00 Author: Darth J464 Posts: 343 |
I have the UMD, and the load times are annoying - 17 seconds is about right. I am trying to ace all of the levels and it has to re-load when each time I restart. | 2009-11-24 23:36:00 Author: steakmo Posts: 57 |
