Anime discussion

Archive: 46 posts

Well, there hasn't been an anime thread in a while, so I figured I'd make my own.

Do you like anime?
What are your favorite series/OVAs/genres and why?
Do you have any good suggestions?

Me, I like some anime, but others bore me. I'm more interested by the ones that have an intriguing story or interesting characters. I do occasionally like fighting or mecha anime, as well as some that are more psychological/philosophical.

Some of my favorite series include Scryed, Escaflowne, Tekkaman Blade and Macross.

Do you like anime?
No.
They are all exactly the same, all the characters are the same, and you can't tell if they are male or female.

Rurouni Kenshin. I tried to watch that once but I got bored quickly. I find that to be true of most episodic anime that gets any mainstream attention here.

I did enjoy the Patlabor movies though, I think they're great. Good mix of mech action, suspense, characters and even political intrigue.

I used to watch Bleach a lot but i got to a point where the story went a bit random and most episodes were just fillers.

I've started watched other animes recently though, at the moment i'm watching Full Metal Alchemist and Dragonball Z

I started watching Death Note as well but it was way too dull and miserable, not sure if i'll watch any more of that.

I love films from Studio Ghibli, my favourite is Howl's moving castle. Princess Mononoke is also good and Grave of the Fireflies had me moved to tears.

Some of the music from anime is wonderful, Liminality from .Hack is incredible, I adore it.

I watched Princess Mononoke. I thought it had a really interesting story and the animation was great.

I'm trying to remember the name of another movie, it was about an android that was trying to reach a kind of futuristic city in the sky.

Erm... possibly Metropolis

If not, its still one of the best anime films I've seen. Up there with Akira and the Ghibli movies.

Hmmm, I'm not sure that's it. The movie I remember had a much darker feel and I think it was older. Metropolis looks very interesting from the few trailers I've seen though.

EDIT: Ah, I think I've found it. The scene I remember is from the very end of the Battle Angel Alita OVA. I can't say I remember much else about it unfortunately.
EDIT 2: Upon further study, it seems that the entire OVA is as dark and depressing as the scene I remembered. I can't recommend it unless you like that style.

You guys should try to be more serious, and try to see the emotion in animes.
It's the same as movies, if you only like the standard action-filled movies, and don't care about story, then yes, most animes suck.

In most cases there's a bigger thought in the story. Something to think about, in all seriousness.

- just some thoughts 'n stuff

Some of my favorite series include Scryed, Escaflowne, Tekkaman Blade and Macross.
You might like Evangelion if you haven't seen it already.

I actually own the boxed set, but I don't own the movie/OVAs. Evangelion is a bit like Trigun to me in that I find the start of the series really interesting and then lose interest near the end.

Oh yeah, there are a bunch of new movies coming out now, I nearly forgot! End of Evangelion isn't that great to be honest. I was going to suggest RahXephon but I'm not sure whether that'll float your boat either.

If you want anime that is serious business (deadly serious business) you can't beat Gasaraki, it's very dry and slow and is more about political/spiritual stuff than the characters themselves.

Have you seen Lain?

Battle angel Alite is a short but great anime
Yeah! Gilgamesh mentioned it on the previous page. I think it was the first anime I ever saw, it was on Sci Fi years ago when they still aired anime.

In my opinion the Hellsings OVA's are the best anime ever anyway! I just love it and I hope that we get the next OVA soon! It's been so long since OVA 4 came out and I always fear to miss the limited editon of the next one....that means if it will ever be released in Germany anyway. >_>

Right now I'm watching Code Geass for the first time and I just love it! I'm just at episode 16 but it already became one of my favorite anime ever! Lelouch is just awesome and I love characters that are surperior like him! If anyone want's to watch it in english you can do that on myspace.

I don't like new anime.
I like older anime, very old, before 94 more or less...

I love mangas and One Piece is the best comic ever, I read X-Men when Claremont was in, I read Miller, a lot of Graphic Novels, but One Piece is incredible.

The only anime I have liked have been Full Metal Alchemist and DBZ.
Dubbed Naruto (that isn't filler) I watch also.

I have tried watching others, but they don't interest me like these ones do.

Do you like anime?: Yes, I do.
What are your favorite series/OVAs/genres and why?: I like Naruto and Dragon Ball Z but hate any anime that contains high tech gadgets 24/7 of the time.
Do you have any good suggestions?: I'd say Naruto (please skip out the fillers, they are terribly boring), Clannad and One Piece (Not that I watch One Piece, but i've heard it's pretty good)

ANIME *cracks knuckles*

I have opinionz

I don't like most new animes, I like to read more, but anime has always just been one-shot dumbed down series that don't appeal to me [ The ones that I've seen ] But I do have favorites,

Ghost in the Shell

The manga and anime is just.. wow wowowowowowowWOWOWOWOWOWWWWWWWWWWWWWW. I LOVE Ghost in the shell, its one of my favorite anime and manga of all time. I have the Major's outfit [ S.A.C. ] in LBP. I'm a sucker for futuristic things, especially police thrillers so I was hook line and sinker for it.

The only thing I don't like about it is that its kind of pretentious in ways, but I still adore the setting and stories.

Cowboy Bebop

WTHWTHWTHWTH THERE MAKING A MOVIE?!?!!?!?!?!!? D< YOU CAN'T RECREATE SPIKE IN SOME DOUCHEY KEANU REEVES! IDC IF HE WAS IN THE MATRIX!! I ONLY LIKED THE FIRST ONE?!!?!?!?!?!!?!?!

/rant

Cowboy Bebop is the detailed gritty future that alot of the other sci-fi stories lack. I love Ed <3 And Faye <3 I don't like the boys since I'm just a playerhater like that.

I hate animes more than I like them, but I still watch them anyway because I don't want to feel left out

Bleach

Okay, where do I start...

I don't like it.

I used to, but the gaps in logic and fillers just clotted my mind into oblivion. I'm still wating for the manga to end, and by the time I took the grueling concentration to read all of the 380+ chapters, I want Aizen to kick Ichigo's whiney *** and kill everybody in Kura Kura town.

Ichigo is fine in the begining, but then the whole thing with Strength came up and I began to hate orange haired people.

I'm not strongenough to become stronger, and If I don't become stronger than everybodies gonna think I'm a wuss, and If I become a wuss Aizens gonna come and kill everybody oh no, what am I going to do? I guess I better get stronger but howwwwwwwwwwwwww? Oh I know, I'll learn a super powerful technique that takes billionz of years to master and master it in three days since I guess I'm just so 1337 like that Then I save Rukia and be a ****** in every battle afterwards, having a moment when I think i'm going to be beat, but WAIT! NO! I'm going to whip out my bankai on you mutha fukas! But oh noes! These guys may actually be stronger than me, well that can't flippin possible, So I'm going to rip off some nice vizards who are just there so I can be stronger and to make the main characters look undeveloped/not diverse enough. SO, I become a wonderful fracking hollow and beat the n00b @$$es of those mutha fracking hollows. So like ja I'm leet but OH MAI GAWD ORIHIME WAS KIDNAPPED! WHERE ARE THE 80008S?!?!!? WE HAVE TO TOTTALY IGNORE THE SUPPOSEDLY WISEST PERSON IN THE ANIME AND JEPORDIZE my LIFE, and I'm like one of the ONLY PERSON to have the ONLY MUTHA FRACKING CHANCE TO KILL THIS GREAT ADVERSARY! SO I'M GOING TO GO RESCUE HER BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE SICK OF THE SHINIGAMIS AND I'M A ******

I could go on, but I'm not.

That was the only one who I felt like rippin on for today xD

I like manga more than anime, I read abunch of sci-fi stuff, hellsing, stuff

I'm tierd after writing that.

xD

Don't watch much anime these days but most recently I've been watching Baccano! and Monster. Both are really good but completely different in terms of themes and atmosphere.

•Ghost in the Shell

No kidding, I actually like S.A.C. and 2nd Gig a lot more then the anime feature film they made in the '90s. You watch it today and it comes off as both unbelievably pretentious and simultaneously rather dated in terms of ideas and themes. That's not to say S.A.C. and 2nd Gig aren't pretentious at all, but at least they come off as more intelligent and relevant (though maybe in a few decades they'll be in the same boat as the film).

•Bleach

Okay, where do I start...

I don't like it.

What? You don't like a series that features a plot which moves at a snail's pace, doesn't flesh out nearly half of its stadium-sized cast (because why bother fleshing out existing characters when you can kill any of them abruptly and introduce over a dozen new ones every story arc?), and has a villain so all-powerful, omnipotent and omniscent that the protagonists might as well try beating him by swinging bananas at him!?

So yeah, I don't like it either.

i don't watch anime much but i do enough to know Bleach just suuuucks, i mean each "epic fight" consists of 10 total strikes at most and a thousand words (atleast) that mean near nothing, and not to mention one fight will span several episodes.....COME ON!!!! One that i enjoyed was Code Geass, even if its a little iffy its still entertaining, uhm lets see what else...oh can't forget Death Note and ide say FLCL is just awsome idk why only 6 episodes...man...as for older anime they're just on a whole 'nother level, i don't like to classify them with todays anime... no...lol2010-04-08 05:14:00

That reminds me of Dragon Ball Z somehow. xD "Are you ready??!!" "You bet I am!!" "Ok then I'll kick you azz" "Ok comon!!" "Ya I will!!" "Now we will see who is the better fighter!!".........blah blah blah blah blah xDDDDDD The only difference is that the fights were longer and better.

What about Hellsing? Hellsing anyone?

ok, you guys want some recommendations? These are some series that I personally enjoyed: cowboy bebop, samurai champloo, great teacher onizuka (GTO), death note, code geass (don't judge by the first episode, it gets better), fullmetal alchemist, death note, paranoia agent... and that's all I can think of off the top of my head! The problem with anime is that there is so much out there (and I'll admit... a good majority of it is difficult to watch, hehe), it makes it hard to find the good shows!2010-04-10 04:04:00

Also, does anyone know any good sites to watch anime on? I've wanted to watch Chobits, but it's not on youtube, and I do remember some large anime video site from a while ago.

I watch bleach, yes its full of fillers and yes the fillers bore me but i cant stop watching it, but for show recomandations i have to say, deathnote, blood +, monster, FMA is okay, darker then black, soul eaters. elfin lied, fate /stay night, clannad, claymore, vampire knight. are good shows and pretty solid, i have to say though, its recommended to watch these in subbed versions (only because the english vocals on the dubbed ones sound a little wierd to me) but thats my opinion anyway2010-04-16 00:58:00

No one else here has watched TTGL? Really?
I've seen it like a long time ago (like a year ago) it was good, thos a bit too extra exaggerated sometimes, main example being

***SPOILER ALERT***

Being the last fight, the robot is bigger than galaxies, it THROWS galaxies at the badguys like shuriken, wth?!
How the heck can they even control that thing at that size and how did it get that big in the st place?!
I mean, sure adding a few pods can not make the fortress gurren lagann freakin galaxctically huge...

***SPOILER ALERT***

Code geass (don't judge by the first episode, it gets better)

If by that you mean the 1st episode is awesome and the rest of the series is even better, then eah i must concur

A lot people seem to be bashing so much on bleach too
What so just because it gives background stories makes it bad?
Oh yeah some people just like hack and slash series, i fogot.
Granted, sometimes it does go a little overboard

sometimes it does go a little overboard, yeah, but in the main storiline there's mostly good fights, like for exmaple, the battles against the Spada in hueco mundo are full of pure battle, along with the battle against Stark, Hailbel, and Barigan vs Soul Society & Vizards is pretty good, excluding the filler episoes in between those are the best battles if you ask me.

but yeah i can see your point of view, not to mention they did that in pne of the latest chapters of the manga, (which has been pretty "meh" ately) i see why some people might dislike it too...

But as i've always said, everyone their tastes i guess.
