Challenger 2 Tank

Archive: 34 posts

Haven't played LBP for a while, but after having the sniffles for the last few days I've been getting back into it again.

I thought I'd try and make a Challenger 2 (http://images.google.co.uk/images?q=challenger%202). The Challenger 2 is Britain's top tank, like the American's M1 Abrams or the German's Leopard 2.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l37/Corporeal/5501aa83.jpg

I think what will differentiate this from a lot of the other tanks in LBP is that it has two sets of working tracks, which you can just about see in a couple of the images below.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l37/Corporeal/aec640c3.jpg

It's roughly to scale, if sackboy is a little on the short side lol.

When it's finished will post some more photos.

Edit: Oops! This was supposed to go in Ideas and Projects, could someone move it there please?

This looks fantastic! Is it drivable?

Also, glad to know you're still with LBP (and LBPC).

Hi Gilgamesh!

Yep, it's drivable! One of the things that annoys me though is that when it goes over rough terrain the tracks come away from the wheels. I don't think I can stop the problem entirely but I definitely need to take some of the links out of the tracks as they are too loose.

are the chain tracks as tight as they can? I think it's normal anyways that it happens and even some real tanks will do it to some extent anyways.

By the way, i'm impressed by the details you have in your tank. Also, does it shoots something?

That is EPIC, seriously cool, 2 sets of working tracks? i tried that once but it kept breaking for some reason. For this i give 5:star: 2009-10-14 16:12:00

They're fairly tight but they could be better, it looks really strange when it happens...

does it shoots something?
Yeah, the cannon will likely work in a similar way to the one used in this biped I made a while ago.

YouTube - LBP biped (Type 3)

Haven't decided how to have it aimed or whether to add a mounted machine gun or coaxial yet.

Thanks! Had the same problem as you with the tracks, turned out it was from accidentally gluing stuff to the treads and they were tearing themselves apart.

Someone should move this to the objects showcase.

But anyway, very great tank. Many people have tried making challenger two's but yours seems by far the best

All it needs is a slick paint job.

EDIT
Btw, to throw it out there, have you seem my abrams? It's in one of my albums. We should have a tank battle lol. But in your post, it says M1 abrams. Those are from the 1960's lol. M1A1 Abrmas or even newer M1A2 are much more modern.

EDIT AGAIN
I've actually seen a lot of tanks with two sets of treads, but never any using the rod method. I made a tank with two sets of treads using the bolt method, but each tread used up one thick layer and one thin layer. I've never seen or tried in the specific way you have it. Does it bonce or anything?

Uploaded a level called "Challenger 2" (PSN: Ayneh) which has this tank as a shareable prize:

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l37/Corporeal/b8b9ed9e.jpg

The suspension does odd things (might just get rid of it later on) and the turret isn't very good but it's a start.

They all look the same to me.

There are two versions of the C2, one with and the other without suspension. The one with suspension bounces and does weird stuff, but the one without suspension doesn't bounce while stationary like I've seen some other tanks in LBP do. I don't know why.

Hey, I just tried this out (and also experimented with the object). I gotta say I loved the camera work and feel on the test level. For the tank itself, it looks great and actually handles pretty well.

The more common problem I've had is that the treads will start to stretch apart and eventually pass through the front and back sprockets. Have you tried using rods instead of springs to connect the tracks?

Additionally, I notice that your suspension system is made out of a thin layer of cardboard and this affects the strength of the bolts adversely. I would change the material to something stronger like metal or stone.

Aside from that, I think it would be cool if the firing control was linked to a camera that panned to the front of the tank to show what it is you're firing at, but that's a minor point.

The body detail is spectacular. I never have liked the single plane tread though because of the very reason I saw on your test level. They just stretch way to much. I did a dual tread shortly after my first tank and I just scrapped it because of that. It looks awesome on flat ground though.

Like Gilgamesh stated, some material changes might help alot but with this tread design, the more weight you add, the more they are going to stretch and in some cases can even pull through the wheels.

I also did a 1 layer tank version. The tread was one thick and one thin as the link. If you have an empty thin layer on the backside of the thick layer used for the tread it will work and you can still maintain the linkless look.

Thanks for letting me know. The front and back sprockets must be too small or there's too much pressure being applied on them...

This is going to be fun to fix!

Thanks, that was really annoying me (was thinking about just getting rid of the suspension), I didn't know the solution would be so simple!

Yeah, the tank is pretty bad in terms of its armament. You can't aim or nothing. I'll be sure to integrate a firing camera in a future version of it!

Good idea, will have to play around with that and see if I can make it work with the current body.

Thanks for the feedback and advice to those who've posted here, it's really helpful. Will post any future updates in this thread.

I checked it and you will be able to use 1 thick and the thin layer right behind it on the treads this side of the tank. On the opposite side the back thick layer and the thin on this side of it.2009-10-18 19:33:00

I've revamped the tank in a short demonstration level called Challenger 2 Mk. IIa.

Improvements include:

Twice as fast as the original.
Lighter than the original.
Treads less likely to break.
Mounted machine gun added.
Shells that emit a sound effect and bright light on detonation, as well making a whooshing sound if they happen to pass overhead added.
On-board camera added.
Stickers added.
I tried a few different bolted tread designs after rz22g suggested them, but I couldn't get any of them to work. I tried to improve in the areas that Gilgamesh brought up, sorting out the suspension, camera and treads/sprockets.

Here's some pics:

Last night I managed to make much stronger treads that, even after loading the tank up with blocks of metal, setting the motor bolts to 50 and driving off ramps, they just refuse to break. Woohoo!

How did you link the tracks together? String?
Yes, I was really having trouble with bolts.

Right, I've worked some more visual and handling improvements into the tank and made a new (more interesting) level around it. The most fun part is going up against another tank at the end and trying not to get blown up.

Here's a video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgQVb0Cqcm8

This is the final version of the Challenger 2 I will publish, I've deleted the previous levels with older versions of tank in them.

I hope you enjoy messing around with it!

Played it, quite fun

Complaints:

Hard to get in and out.

There's cardboard showing that's not stickered.

There should be two machine guns, with a three layer tanks that's always fun

Wow, that works really well! Though I somehow managed to lose one of the treads (a link broke somehow and it just slipped off). It might have had something to do with my going back and forth a lot while trying to remember how to fire the main cannon. The tank still managed to work fine without it.

I got blown up by the other tank at the end. The machine gun is amazing IMO.

True, I'm not sure how to go about fixing that without ruining the aesthetics.

Kinda burnt out on making tanks, but if I make another one I'll be sure to keep that in mind!

To be honest that was intentional. The bolts, radiator, antenna and canisters are all left exposed. I guess on an actual tank they aren't, but I thought it looked cool.

Why is it so satisfying to see something intricately put together get blown to smithereens?

Excellent tank, I really look forward to giving this a go later!

Regarding exit/entry you could attatch some thin layer invisible cardboard to the front and back of the access hatch, that would ensure sack stays in plane when entering. Also I'd love to see the hatch close when sack enters. All this needs is a wobble bolt at weak strength on the hatch, wired up to a prox switch set to direction. That way it will close when you enter but to exit all you have to do is jump out.

How is the suspension set up? Stiff springs? When I tried this they kept moving out of line and snapping.

A good stress test would be to drive off a ramp onto a pointed object, breaks the treads every time for me!

you can't stop that, and you shouldn't make the tracks too tight either, it can lead to even worse problems.2009-11-26 04:58:00

i made some new tracks that are really strong, and because of the way there connected, if one track or even 2 in a row break, the chain does not and can still work effectively. also, unlike most tracks that simply pivot around the wheel or sprockets, they pivot closer to the center of the wheel so that they have better contact and look better. they can be seen on my T34 tank level by searching "t34 tank" or "horwitzer2".2009-11-26 05:20:00

i played the level and the tank is good, but i think you can improve the suspension. you see the way you have the suspension set up, the pivot points (between each set of wheels) tend to go all the way around which just looks silly... so instead you could just use wobble bolts but set the rotation to around 90, and the strength to 0, that way it will act the same but not go all the way around. just a thought though....2009-11-28 05:38:00

Darn, these are all really good and clever ideas! I didn't know you could do that sort of thing with wobble bolts.

I will be sure to implement these suggestions.

I had the same problem. The solution used was to place 2 wheels on each end of a pivoting seesaw, so there are 3 seesaws on each side of the tank for the 6 wheels.

Tried it out and thought it was really neat! I loved the mechanism for aiming and firing.

I wish I could get bolted tracks to work...

They're just bits of metal attached with string, lots of string!

If you've made your tracks using bolts try increasing the strength of them, or maybe you could go for a bolts/string combo.
