wild west sheriffs

wild west sheriffsfreddykrugerfred
My very first attempt at creating a LBP paintinator level where you use the gun in almost every part of the level.

It's all very basic but I just wanted to see if I could create an action level with the expansion around the wild west theme.
all
Features

enemy cowboys to shoot down
custom made scenery of a ranch, a train and some other objects
features a neat bonus level at the end where you get to play an on-rails shooter like metal gear solid expansion pack first level by using a sticker.

Let me know what you think 's good and bad so I know what to pay attention to in future action levels.

Also take into account I made this level in 1 day because it's just a test to see if I get the hang of the paintinator gun.

thanks in advance! 4f4

Hi. I played this recently and as far as the paintinator is concerned you seem to have got the hang of that ok. I should have written my thoughts down while playing but I didn't so I'm just going from memory here but I think all the paintinator parts worked ok.

The 'bonus' area at the end was neat but I felt you should have given some reward in the form of score bubbles maybe for completing it as there really wasn't any 'bonus' involved.

The design overall was pretty good although I like a bit more detail but that's only my personal preference and I know from experience that detail eats thermo! so most creators go with basic design to leave more room for gameplay. I did like the wagon in the barn that you had to move to make a platform, that was good.

I would have liked the level to be a bit longer as it felt rather short. Overall though a good start that just needs a bit more polish.

On a side note I thought the barrels you used looked like the ones from my Sheriff Sack level. If they are that's fine because that's why I gave them as prizes but it is generally considered good etiquette to give credit to the original creator when you use their objects but I didn't see any evidence of that.

Also you even used the same name ( Sheriff Sack ) in a magic mouth at the beginning. I have to say I'm not so thrilled about that. I would have preferred to see you come up with a name of your own.

Hi ! Thanks for the feedback :-)

i'm sorry about the name, I didn't thought of it beeing the same as your's (must have forgotten it).

I will replace this name asap and put a creditnote to you for the barrels (yes they are from your level as I loved those)

Thanks Joey!

Yeah it's pretty decent for my first attempt, unfortunately only got 2 stars so far.

But that's okay as it was just a level I made in 1 day to try out the expansion pack gameplay.

glad you guys/girls enjoyed it

Okay. It was a good level. However it had several flaws that could discourage players.

Pros
-Fun
-Looks alright most of the time
-Awesome for a first shooter level
-Nice minigame
Cons
-Stairs!!! at the end!!!
-Visuals could be more smooth
-The train...
-Gameplay is clunky in some areas

Over all it was good. 3.5/5

The first gun guy - I dropped down by accident, so I couldn't see him anymore! But I could still shoot him. It took me a lot of tries to figure out which layer, and where I needed to aim, since he was off the screen.

The carriage puzzle was cool. Nice looking carriage! Good paintinator fight scenes. Good decoration! These jumps are very high and kind of frustrating.

The gas at the swinging part was subtle - so I died the first time. The second time I just swung across. I see you have paintinator switches - they don't appear to be necessary.

These bosses take a lot of hits; it's mostly a matter of standing in one place and hitting R1 anyways. I think less hits would be just as difficult but more fun.

Cool tepee!

Got off the train and got a little stuck - there's a big iron block - and I guess there's a hidden trampoline behind it. I triggered it once by accident - but now it won't trigger again. It triggered OK after i popped, and came back again.

The shooting game was clever and fun!

A small pointsfest at the end - why? I'd be annoyed if it was multiplayer and I lost because of the pointsfest.

Overall a cute level, it looks like a lot of work went into it! You did a good job.

thanks a lot everyone!

please tell me which levels of yours you want me playing and commenting on
otherwise I'll just pick one randomly

what pleases me the most is that most comments love the mini game.

I will tell you why this is so important to me:

I'm planning on re-creating an entire level with that gameplay with a health bar to the right of the screen showing how much life you have left.

hi nightwing.

at first i have to say that i don't like shooting-levels very much (just my personal taste), so i'm maybe not the best one to comment a level like this.

i had mixed feelings about it. i did like the story, the setting, the train and the "jumping parts" but overall i noticed that the look of the level is rather unclean. IMO you could improve the shapes, add more decoration and pleeeeease add music. i think that the missing music is one of the biggest problems.

the level shows that you have a lot of practice when it comes to gameplay (even though in the beginning there was a lack of checkpoints) but just a nice gameplay doesn't make a good level in my opinion. you have to offer something for the eyes and the ears too.

i hope my critic wasn't to harsh and helps a little bit.

greetings, anna

Don't overcomplicate it! Make sure it works OK with 2-4 players. Keep it simple and fun.

I didn't realize this was an F4F thread but if you can try my new level "Who's stealing our delicious delicious brains" that would be cool! I've got a thread going here: https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=17686

Good stuff :
- Liked the sunset riders references (I find it hard to believe you haven't, that boss was almost exactly the same as the first boss from the first level, and that train was pretty similar too)
- Some nice scripted bits (that bull with the convinient swingy thing, the sign that falls down). This proves that you have some attention to detail.

Suggestions / Improvements :
- Capitalize the level name and write a short description! Nothing screams "I didn't put in as much effort as I could have" than those two things!
- Try to avoid Mm scenery if you can help it (also those rock columns should go in the background to give the impression of perspective that they are in the distance)
- At the very end of the level you made a set of stairs using the square tool, one of my pet hates, sorry. You could have at least smoothed out the bottom side with the corner edit tool
- The cowboys could have aimed in different directions to increase the challenge, it's possible to arc the paintballs in bits so you never have to come out of cover.

I think you should have a little look at the Mm canyon levels and deeply try and analyse how they make their levels look so good. When I did that the quality of the levels I made sky rocketed dramatically.

I don't say these things to be mean, please don't take it the wrong way, but LBP is a learning experience for everyone, and i'm still learning. There are loads of people on this site that could school me hard if they tried.

So please don't take any offense when I give you :star::star::star:

My f4f is in my sig.

thanks man, greatly appreciate your comments

you are absolutely right with the references to sunset riders , I'm glad someone noticed them

the bulls are also a reference to the first level.

as far as professional level design, this was merely a try out level for me with the paintgun. that's why I didn't put in the same amount of effort as with some of my other levels

Be sure to check out my halloween level though, the detail in my level there is absolutely amazing
