Crane help

Archive: 8 posts

Hey again, i was wondering if sum1 could asnwer my question.
i created a crane to allow players to grab on too and go down a tunnel slowly but I'm having a problem with that part.

I have tried all the strings etc and i still can not get it to go down slowly, it seems it always bounces around the place or just doesnt increase in size.

So basically i would like to know how i can create a rope that can connect to the crane and allow the players to ascend slowly down when they grab on.

No expert but your not going to get this with string unless there is a glitch that allows the length to be varied in game. You can give the effect maybe. I have not tried but perhaps a winch set to invisible and activated by the grab. Also connect a string but set it to maximum winch length. Maybe it will have the appearance of being lowed by the string.2009-10-12 20:03:00

I dont think its a glitch there's a level in one player, collectors lair which has it at the very start, players grab onto a sponge circle and it lowers them and they have to dodge electric things.

Just played the level and it is the winch but its alot bigger.
So i was wondering if any1 could tell me how i could achieve this without being thrown about or going down fast basically the same settings as the one at the start of the story level.

Simple, make a stiff piston. Put the grab switch to directional, and attach it to the piston. For the time limit, depending on how slow, make it really high like 30 or 40 seconds. Set mininum length to the height you want it to start out at, and maximum length to the height you want it to end at.

Hope that helps.

Stiff piston? I can't agree on that one. If you want to replicate the passage you speak of, you'll need a winch.

1. Create some sort of ceiling.
2. Create some grabbable object for the player to hang on.
3. Connect the object to the ceiling using a "winch".
4. Set the maximum of the winch so that the grabbable object can reach the bottom of the hole.
5. Set the "Time" for the winch quite high (double the desired amount of time. If you want the winch to take 20 seconds to completely extend, set the time to 40 seconds).
6. Attach a "Grab Switch" to the grabbable object.
7. Set the "Grab Switch" to "Directional".
8. Connect the "Grab Switch" to the winch.

You're done! The rest is up to you. You might have to round some corners and tweak optional hazards in the hole so that the objects can't get stuck down there (or just remit them each time the player respawns, but that's an advanced technique).

Oh I thought you meant you wanted the appearance of a sting or rope, doing the job of a winch, which is why I suggested what I did. If the appearance is not the concern then a winch would do for a winding type passage. If its a straight shot then it does not really matter, you could use a stiff piston but to me a winch looks better.2009-10-13 04:05:00

If you don't want the player to move around much, you could mount a stiff piston between a block and the ceiling, do all the control stuff mentioned with the winch above, then hang the grab switch bit o' sponge to the block from a string. It would work the same, but the player would only be able to swing back and forth a little bit. Slightly more hassle, but you could use that for a tighter corridor, and have greater control over the camera.

So that's ceiling to (long timing) piston, piston to block, block to string, string to sponge. Grab switch (directional) on sponge, but wired to PISTON, not string.

I think the issue here, quite simply, is you need to make the length of time longer, as Treas said (just more verbosely ). Play around with different times, the time is what decides how long it takes to complete one "cycle" of movement.2009-10-13 10:05:00
