Chain Messages at an all-time high.

Archive: 85 posts

I know I'm not alone here, because they are chain messages lol. Like a malicious fungus, they spread to every psn across the corner of the globe. Anyone else getting really ticked off at this? I sure am.

There's the:

Send this message to twenty of your friends and you will get $20 for the psn store.

And let's not forget the:

Send this message to all of your friends or your psn account will be banned. The purpose of this message is to test the message tracking system.

And how could we overlook the oh-so-annoying:

Send this message to 1,000,000 people or Sony will go bakrupt.

That doesn't even make any sense!

So how do you guys feel about and deal with the surges of chain messages that claim "Halo is coming to the PS3" or "God of War is going to X-Box". Also, what kind of funny chain messages have you people gotten?

Discuss.

I've seen the "Sony wants to know how many psn accounts are active and you get $50 in credit at the store" and the "Lets keep PSN free only if this goes to "x" number of people will it continue to be free". Crazy

Funny you posted this, we're just having a discussion about it in one of the Groups.

The opinion in the Group seemed to be pretty uniformed - these messages are not only a pain in the rear, but they could be quite dangerous for some younger players to receive, especially if the messages are asking them to do stuff with the promise of money. Not clever.

What I don't really understand is, if someone is a 'rage-quitter' or hater, rating levels 1 star and tagging Lousy, I don't agree with it, but I understand WHY they do it - if they and their friends do it enough, they can have an AFFECT on a level's rating. Yeah, well done, you must be so proud.

But, these trolls who are chain messaging will hardly ever see the results of their 'work' - only if they get messages back or hear about how far it's spread (much like a computer virus).

It's something else I don't understand, I'm afraid. Pretty sad.

Yeah I had this one yesterday!
It's the first time I get that kind of message, and for 2 seconds, I almost believe it,
as it was sent by someone of my friends list

It's pretty stupid and annoying, like all those e-mail spams etc...

Go me

Ne neither - I have a fairly chunky friends list, but for the most part, I and everyone else on there sort of keep to ourselves. I only get a message if it's a specific question for me, and that's very rare indeed.

Of course, I just got a whole slew of requests out of the beta, and time will tell how these ones pan out...

Very irritating. I tend to just explain to the person who sent it to me how ridiculous they are and delete them from my friends list.

I've gotten quite a few about a MW2 beta as well.

I get tons of them, I think I even set my PSN status to something like "Spam me and I'll delete you"

One seems to have the potential to be worse, it asks for your email address... hope not too many people buy into that and other things that ask for more personal things.

Yes I've had all the ones mentioned here and tend to get 4 or 5 every day.

They are a pain but I just delete them straight away and forget about them until the next batch come along the next day.

I got the, "If you send this to 25 people, you'll get Map Pack 4 for free!"

I hate these and I'm trying to get Sony to create a patch about reporting these chain messages. Even if I can't get Sony to do it, they have to know about this ridiculous habit.

I've gotten everyone of those Chains and then some, like that "send this to your friends and if they send it back you're homies."

@ Jack
The best thing I found out about that Sony is gonna charge for PSN Spam is the date at which they'll 'start' charging us. The one I received just tonite said the date would be 1-12-09...lol Apparently I've been screwing Sony over for 10 months now. lol I assumed the spammer meant it as in December 1st, but I found it funny regardless.

I got a real funny one,
"This is an official message from: SONY
**********************************

Dear PLAYSTATION users,
As you might know, 20th of october is PLAYSTAION day. As a gift to our PLAY STATION 3 owners; we here at sony would like to give 100 lucky people from out PLAYSTATION community, the chance to win 5 new Avatars to use for their PLAYSTATION NETWORK accounts. Howerver, in order to be one of these lucky few, you must forward this message to all of your friends"

No fullstop at the end, however is spelled wrong, theres no such thing as playstation day.

Just delete the people who send you them, one of my friends actually believed they'd get the beta code stuff LOL!!

I was surprised to see they were coming from a pretty famous LBP creator

You would think an online service such as PSN would remain free of such things...but alas, I've been getting these as well...

Now what do about them, that is the question.

Starts whistling:

Did you forget your [/sarcasm] tags?

No, not really.
The only place I ever had chain messages before was my hotmail/msn account.

Getting "annoyed" by folks on PSN is one thing but up until a couple of months ago I never received a chainmail of any kind on PSN and I really didn't expect to receive them in the first place on a gaming console.

Oh right, I actually wasn't sure. TBH I think of this sort of thing as inevitable with a messaging system like the one on PSN - people are allowed to send messages to each other - some of those people are going to send dumb messages. I don't really see the fact that it's a console as making any difference.2009-10-12 12:48:00

those drive me nuts. I've had about 6 this week. I don't know why these circulate like they do. They make no sense.

In alot of ways, an idea is like an organism. They reproduce (pass from one person to another), and they mutate (the game of "telephone" is a great example of this).

In other words, like creatures, they will evolve and spread. They are subject to selection pressures, many go extinct, and so forth.

This being said, chain letters are to be expected. They are, using the above analogy, akin to a simple virus. An "organism" who is encoded to copy itself as many times as possible and spread - which will be an incredibly successful organism because it's one and only real goal is self-propagation.

I won't get too specific, but history is full of ideas that are basically

1) Pay attention to this idea!

and

2) Spread this idea to as many people as you can and good things will happen to you! and/or Don't spread this idea to enough people and bad things will happen to you!

It's to be expected, because an idea with this as part of it make for some of the best "survivors and propagators", and it honestly doesn't matter what other garbage is caught up with it.

The reason there are chain letters is really the same reason there are viruses, in a sense ... the opportunity for such a survival strategy is there and anything that takes advantage of that survival strategy will be successful.

Ideas evolve, but they do so in regards to their own survival and benefit, not specifically ours.

I'm glad this thread popped up as I've noticed this as well. Before a couple days ago, I had never received any, but I received two within the past two days. They were both comical, one said that if the message didn't get to x amount of people by January 12th, 2009, they would charge for PSN usage. It's sad that people can pass on a chain message and not even realize the date for this "PSN charge" passed 9 months ago and nothing has happened. The other one said something along the lines of, "Prove you are an idiot by sending this to 20 people." I deleted both those people from my friends list. 2009-10-12 14:39:00

They are on the Xbox too, only they're twice as retarded.
ON the XBox you use MS points, 800 for 10$ US. People just send messages like this:
90MS Pts.
It's retarded, they think they'll get a reward or they'll feel acomplished when people say they got one.

Again, is it really so surprising that people can fall for and believe in ridiculous things en-masse' if the idea itself is a self-propagator?

By definition, a self-propagator propagates not based on merit, but primarily based on instruction.

Would it not be more surprising if there were no chain letters?

Wow, this thread got popular. Seems people are outraged over these crazy chain messages.

One of my friends sent me a message that said.

"People, Listen. These chain messages are fake, and Sony won't give away millions of dollars for a few messages. Halo is never coming to the PS3, and God of War is never going to X-box. This kind of spam only proves that you are stupid enough to believe what little kids make up in their basements.

Send this to any person who sends you a chain message in the future."

I have zero tolerance for these people. If I get sent a message that isn't completely relevant to me and it is from one of my friends, they get removed. I don't bother warning people because I feel that its a waste of time writing them an essay on why they shouldn't believe/send chain letters, especially when they might just ignore it and continue. My conversation with a chainmail sender. (A true story.)

Him: "IMPORTANT NOTICE.

PSN is not going to be free, blah blah blah... (I can't remember what else he said...)"

Me: "Chainmail FAILS. And it's against PSN terms of use. In my opinion, all people who send chainmail should be banned."

Him: "I was just trying to see who believed it. Calm down."

Me: ""I was just trying to see who believed it" Well thanks for the unnecessary spam. *Deletes and blocks*" (NOTE: I didn't really block, him, because I wanted to hear his reply.)

Him: "*****"

Him: A clever hacker has created a virus on the PSN, and it will crash your PS3! Send this to 25 people and warn them of this genious hacker!

Me: This is spam. Don't send me this again, okay?

Him: **** you. i get to send whatever i wnt.

Me: I just said to stop spamming me. Calm down.

Him: ur ****ing mom.

Me: Okay, seriously? I was just being nice. I'm going to report you. And learn how to type.

Him: *****

Me: Screw you.

And CyberSora blocked him and lived happily ever after. The end.

Haha, I hate them but my PSN friends have to go through a serious process where I moniter their inbox and outbox for a seven day trial period! Organisation and OCD for the win!

I did get a hilarious one the other day along the lines of:

"Sony are testing the PSN messaging system and need you to post this to 30 other friends. If you go then the head of Sony will give you a blowjob, Yes that's right, he's giving out blowjobs"

Oh.......kayyy

Send this to everyone on your friends list.

I know your secret.

Then just wait to see what you get back.

The only thing that someone might "get back" from me is an open spot on their friends list.

I just got a big one on YouTube saying all user accounts will be deleted in December. I got a reply (chained as well) a couple of days later saying don't believe this, YouTube doesn't have the rights, etc. etc. I didn't do anything, they both came to me without my input. It's funny, it's like listening in on this little chain mail war of some distant galaxy. 2009-10-18 04:37:00
