Opening closed doors

Archive: 11 posts

Hi guys, (and girls maybe?)
I'm new to the world of Little Big Planet. Right now I'm just messing around with the editor trying to find out how I'll program my levels. So I made 2 doors closing when I enter a room. The problem is I can't make them reopen after that. I know there must be an easy way to do this. I searched a lot, but never found an answer to this.

Well how did you make them close? If you used a permanent switch, then you can easily change the bit with the magnetic key to dissolve so after a while of being trapped, dissolve it and the doors reopen. Sorry I'm terrible at explaining things, but I'm sure someone will help, or you will soon learn how things work.

I closed them using a sensor switch with direction behavior.2009-10-10 20:37:00

OR switch? I guess I should complete the game to have every tools then, cause I don't have this kind of switch.2009-10-10 21:10:00

LOL.. .sorry but thats just funny no matter who you are...

Or switch is not something you get in the game, its something you make.

Search incinerator22 on LBP and he has a level that will show you different switches. There are many levels out there that will show you. Search for switches or logic as well.

Its actually pretty easy, if you want a perfect example of an OR switch, take a look at the third level meg the mechanics realm, near the start there'll be a platform that gets pulled up/down by a chain, right before you jump on it from the right at the bottom, take a look down on the ground. You'll see a set of magnetic key switches and 3 blocks being moved by pistons and etc within a section of thin material.

This is an OR switch. One simply creates a section of thin material, generally wider than tall (3 units tall is plenty high enough)

Make it wide enough so you can cut out a 1 tall section from the middle, leaving a ring of one unit thick thin material all around the edge, with a 1 tall x wide (5-6 should be good) hole in middle.

Now stick 3 1x1 blocks, not glued, free moving, inside of this small tube youve made, you'll want to glue the large outside edge of material to the background now.

Leave a 1x1 gap between the edge chunk and the two outside squares, the middle on can be anywhere between the outside two. Now attach the two outside squares to their opposite sides by a piston, and set it to stiff. Set they're in distance to 0~1, and hook up a directional magnetic key to them both so they dont flip out when you exit pause mode.

Simple set their distance long enough that when turned on, they'll slide that free moving middle square all the way to the opposite side. Put a magnetic key on the free moving middle block and a mag switch on one side of the outside block, and have its radius small enough so the free moving block only turns it on when its on one side.

Now you'll want to attach your two switches to the pistons, set to directional, and the magnetic key on your contraption to your doors. In other words, when your character enters the room, the one piston turns on and slides the block to the opposite side, closing the door, and then when you activate the other switch it turns on the opposite piston, sliding the block back and opening the doors again.

hope this helps

If you're more of a Mac switch user than a PC switch user, you can get switches like lionheart described from Gopher42 - just search for his logic levels. Also, snowflakecat's Engineering Basement has great switches, but he assumes you're more of a Unix switch user, so his explanations for what his switches do is sometimes...opaque to unlearned souls such as myself. Still, I use a LOT of his switches, which are small and thermo-friendly.

Do work on this stuff, though...switches are LBP's magic juice. Wiring diagrams are behind almost every "neat trick" you see in other folks' levels. Music, materials, and costumes make up the "hidden loot" you get for 100% completion...you get all the basic switches just for completing tutorials.

Hey lionhart, just wanted to let you know that what you've described (and what's in the Metroplis level) is actually a set-reset switch. One button sets it to go down and the other button resets it to go back up.

What you would need for this situation is sort of an AND gate, where whatever switch is used to open the door is initially triggering one half of the AND gate. I am going to work on a little diagram here to explain:

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1546&stc=1&d=1255272812

Your inputs would need to an inverted sensor switch for the the left piston, and whatever switch you need to re-open the doors for the right piston. Both of these are set to directional. Make sure you make your pistons stiff and with a timing of .1 seconds.

The magnetic key in the middle is inverted and set to directional, so it only activates when both pistons extend. The trigger radius for this AND gate is shown with the green circles. Notice that the switch in the middle is only activated when the player is in the room and they haven't triggered the switch to leave the room. Wire this to your door for the desired effect.

This is the easiest way to do it. Any other questions?

Boy, you have one heck of an adventure ahead of you.

Logic may be confusing at first, but if you really start to think about it you will eventually be able to make your own

There are some really great logic levels out there, go look at them for a bit until you understand
