gevurah22
A LittleBigPlanet Pioneer
Interview conducted by MrsSpookyBuz (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/member.php?u=3896)

Whether you?re a newcomer to LittleBigPlanet or a seasoned veteran, chances are you?ve heard of gevurah22. There are tons of reasons why this creator is recommended by so many and appears on numerous Top Ten lists, but it's his innovation that sets him apart. Where does gevurah22 get all this inspiration from? Let?s ask the man himself!

The Low-Down

What video games did you enjoy playing before LBP was released?
Well, I play many different genres from RPGs, fighters (go go Street Fighter and the VS series), and the occasional shooter/survival horror. I'm not a huge FPS fan, but I'll throw down on some Halo or Call of Duty. Yet, my favorite genre that I always come back to is the Metroid-esque levels such as the Metroid series obviously, Cave Story, and Aquaria. Also, anything with giant robots.

What was the first full level you ever built? And what was it like?
Ha ha! You know what... this is going to make me look like a fanboy (which I'm really not), but my first level was called "Red Rings of Burninating" which involved you jumping into a giant XBOX360, battling a giant RROD monster, and platforming your way through its innards to eventually fight Master Chief.

Considering this was in the initial beta, there was a huge influx of PS3>360 levels. To step back really quick, I own two of each current gen system, so I'm rather impartial to the all encompassing "system wars," lol. Anyway, I didn't know where to start in regards to building, but after seeing all these "I hate 360" levels which basically sucked, I wanted to one-up all of them by actually making a grand farce of the whole situation. It actually garnered a lot of attention and was part of some best beta level lists, on top of fanboy wars on my YouTube page, which was hilarious! The whole situation was silly, but very interesting for a first level out of the gate.

YouTube - LittleBigPlanet - Red Rings of Burninating

What levels have you published to date?
Red Rings of Burninating (moderated, lol)
LittleBigPhantasy Part 1 (moderated, lol)
The Azure Palace
Mobile Suit Armorboy: This is Training?
LittleBigContra Stage 8 - Alien's Lair
LBP @ Comic-con 2009
The Steampunk Samurai (on GOTY)

Which of these is your own favourite? And why?
Wow, that's hard to say. I'm kinda split between two honestly. I'd still say the Azure Palace considering everything that has happened with it and so on. It really holds a special place in my heart as a creator. But I'm also really fond of The Steampunk Samurai. Aside from the fact that it's on the GOTY disc, I really felt I can still push my creation skills even higher on top reigniting my want to create even more.

Are there any other creators who inspire you?
Well there are many, but I'll group them generally in the order I remember. Geosautus, Luckett_X, my homeboy Darknessbear, NinjaMicWZ, CuzFeeshe, X-NOBODY-X, and johnee. If it weren't for his awesome tech demos, I don't think I would have been able to push my mecha in the Steampunk Samurai to where they are now.

What?s the worst thing that?s happened while creating?
I'd say the worst was when I was nearly finished with creating this crazy mecha vs. space aliens-esque level in the beta and all of a sudden, the game froze as I was about to publish it. I did a hard reset to my PS3 since nothing was happening on its own and when I came back, everything was gone. I was on full rage mode when I realized I couldn't bring it back on top of not having an extra save on a USB stick. So lame.

What?s your pet hate in LBP?
Well, I work with a lot of mechanics in small form factors, so I usually have a ton of wires covering what I'm working on making it hard to edit things the way I want to.

If you worked for Media Molecule, what tool/object/material would you have liked to see developed?
In regards to creation, I would like for a quick view that would remove all the mechanics you have set to not-visible etc, making it easier to view the playable visual aspect of the stage without having to jump into Play mode. Everybody wants a melee tool, but I'm not so sure that'd be the best. If anything, an anti-grav or object flipping tool would be spectacular for me. I'd also want them to grab the Gundam license for some awesome stickers, sounds, and music on top of some pretty neat levels. I also want more key colors. I definitely need more key colors!

Any tips for new creators?
Just build what you want and don't be afraid to ask for help. The community is generally supportive and has lots of good information to pull from. Also, make sure you get other people besides yourself to test your levels. Different viewpoints of your creation are always best. Heck, even get someone who has little experience with LBP. I'm pretty sure they'll find a bunch of bugs for you without even realizing it!

Digging Deeper

The Azure Palace has had a long and ?interesting? history ? what are your feelings about the level now?
I still love the level, granted it's rather outdated. I've been really reluctant to update it simply because I'm rather nostalgic of the quirks and issues that made it so popular/infamous. I was in the process of doing it before just to give it an overhaul, but redoing everything will take up too much time. Plus for some reason, I can't edit too much of certain things without completely affecting another. I might as well make a new level altogether. As for throwing water in there, let's just say there's way more work to be had in doing so. Regardless of all the madness it's garnered, it's still my baby and I love it for what it is. =)

I called you a ?pioneer? earlier and many people think that of you. Does this put you under further pressure when creating?
First of all, it's an honor for you and others to think of me in that light, so thank you very much. There are many others out there who have pushed the game's limitations beyond my scope, in my opinion, but I suppose I don't mind a little flattery here and there, lol. But back to the original question, I think it does put a little pressure on my shoulders. I want to continue to push what's possible in the game and those expectations only compound onto what I want to provide in regards to a unique game play experience. I know not everybody is going to like what I create, but if anything I just want to show players that a lot of things are possible as long as you're willing to invest the time into it.

Do you have a particular order or ritual when building a level?
As you can tell, most of my levels are not typical puzzle platformers. I generally tend to focus on what the type of game play that will be featured first. If I can't solidify that, then the player experience will essentially be tarnished. From that point on, I go into an "idiot savant" mode and start throwing ideas that pop up into my head into the level. I might create the atmosphere first or the general level design, it's all so random. Sometimes I'll draw up blueprints at lunch during work or I'll grab my recorder on my iPhone and record ideas that have been brewing in my head to test out later. I'll also watch source material that similar to what I'm working on for ideas. For example, I watch a lot of old 2D side scrolling video games on YouTube to see what I want to emulate. Other times, I'll watch movies to fish for inspiration. For example with my GOTY level, the Steampunk Samurai, I watched "Once Upon a Time in the West" (a classic spaghetti western) and "The Seven Samurai" in a row in order help set the mood for the stage. Aside from the game play aspect, I just let things fly and go from there!

You were involved in the massive LittleBigContra series of levels ? how did you find the experience?
That was fun collaborating with others in a joint project. Being a big fan of Contra for the NES, it was easy to jump into yet recreating the Alien's Lair proved to be a little difficult at first. Being someone who really can't continue on a project unless it looks excellent in my head, I could not get the whole "Alien" look for the life of me. After watching a ton of YouTube videos of the level on top of playing it several times, I finally got the look I wanted and everything clicked from there! The end result was awesome and everyone I worked with @ neogaf and LBPCentral really did an awesome job in making it a coherent experience.

What can we expect from gevurah22 in the future?
Ever since I finished working on the GOTY edition, I've been in a long process of continuously improving my mecha, trying to make it a painless process for people to play. So, I'm getting ever so close to reaching that goal where they no longer have to fight the controls, to the point it might feel like you're playing a completely different game! On top of that, it's the 30th Anniversary of my favorite anime series, so I will be making a set of Gundam tribute levels where you obviously control the titular mecha, LBP style! And of course, let's not forget that since water is on the way, expect a sequel to the Azure Palace. Let's just say, I'm pretty sure I'm ready for what's to come with this "game changing" tool. =)

And finally, what?s your favourite cheese?
I'll be honest. As much as I love good 'ol cheddar on burgers, hot dog on a stick, etc, I'm going to have to give my vote to Brie. Aside from the fact that it is sometimes referred to as the "Queen of the Cheeses," it gives such an excellent soft flavor to breaded delicacies such as my homemade paninis. Ha ha, that was silly but I freaking love Brie! If the next cheese update called Brie adds Gundams to LBP, you're darn sure I'm going to hail Brie as the queen of the universe.

Thanks so much for the interview. It was definitely a pleasure. =)

Our Conclusions

Playing through gevurah22?s levels all over again was both enjoyable and satisfying. There?s always that little ?something? which sets them apart and keeps the interest high - there is no set formula and no boundaries which get in the way of the variety and sheer refreshment of his levels. If you haven?t discovered gevurah22 as a creator yet, I strongly recommend you come out from under that rock and play these superb, innovative, inspirational offerings. You?ll not be disappointed.

I moved the interview credits so that it's visible to all instead of being squished at the bottom of the post.

Absolutely. With only one creator being interviewed every two weeks, we've got lots of options. That's only 26 creator spotlights in a year, and there are many more than that to pick from.

Thank you, this was exactly the aim of these Creator Spotlights - to try and get an informal insight into the lives of some great creators.

As to gevurah22, we realised that he'd been interviewed a few times beforehand, but he was a very qualified interviewee, and a good foundation for Creator Spotlights here at LBPC.

We'll try to give LBPC members a great and varied selection of Spotlights, so that all tastes and favourites are catered for.

Gevurah's definitely a star in LBP-land. Holy hell, I loved seeing his creator interview on the GOTY edition. After watching a few of the more awkward ones, it's like he rolls in there - an old hand at the Sony interview! All dressed up, and talking about LBP in front of a camera - old hat for this guy. Qore, Comic Con, GOTY. Perfect choice for Spotlight #1 - setting the bar high.

This is the coolest feature - and I was literally JUST last night thinking something along similar lines, but I imagined a version with more personal detail, including names, pictures, what the creator does in real life, and focusing the feature on the real-life counterparts to the "star" LBP creators.

Of course, you could so easily end up with 90% of creators turning that one down! Most of us tend to likes our anonymities.

it's still a really cool coincidence to see this literally the day after I had pondered how cool it would be!

It would be cool to have everyone on the lookout for great levels by unknown creators not even registered on the forum. Make a list of a few creators and go through their levels and vote for them. Then you can ask the creator with the most votes politely if he or she or it wants to be interviewed. If not you go down to the next on the list. Just a suggestion. Then again I guess we do have the recommendation thread but that's for levels and there's no interview.2009-10-10 22:23:00

Will you always be interviewing big names, or will you reach out to the lesser-known skilled creators (like me, for a self-promoting example) and give them a chance to chat with you?

Well, that's a good question - there's a wide range of great PEOPLE on LBPC, not just creators. But the plan for the Creator Spotlights is to get the low-down on creators who - for whatever reasons - have been pioneering, inspirational, and who may be generally interesting for members to learn more about. There's no set criteria, apart from perhaps having a decent body of work, and being able to put up with me asking them questions.

I was thinking the same. Hopefully she choses people that seem to be less well-known but still have couple good levels (not me right now )

SLS10, I think you would be deserving of an interview but hey, that's just me.

Wow... EXCELLENT interview. It was the talents of Gevurah22 that got me to LBPC in the first place, and its fantastic hearing the details.

True story: I was fairly new to LBP and went into the level "Little Big Phantasy"... got to the end with the dragon and was absolutely AMAZED at the mechanics. Unfortunately, I had to leave for dinner so I hearted the level and figured I'd finish it later that night.... went back and it was GONE! (only 2 hours later!)

So, I started searching the internet for Gevurah22 to see what happened and came upon LBPC.

I'm still a huge fan of Gevurah22's levels, and love it when a creator tries to push the boundaries of the type of experiences you get in LittleBigPlanet.

Ive been there since the beta and let me you that Gevurah22's level created a milestone in LBP's community. He simply was ahead of us and he's the first user to truly distinguish itself. It's simple, there was 2 well-knowned guys at that time and it was him + Geosautus.

Since I know she's going to avoid it until forced to, but the demand is strong, I will now publish an interview conversation I just had with MrsSpookyBuz, here in my mind.

So, Mrs. um, Buz, what awesome levels have you published to date?

Well, Coyote, all of my levels are awesome, including the ones that don't yet exist. But I have gotten approximately a gajillion plays on my Hyper Cube series. The series also has the unexpected side effect of making adult American players crave dark British beers.

Uh. How many plays is a gajillion?

About eleventy bazillion.

Right. And on a scale of one to ten, how awesome is Project Genesis 2 going to be?

SO AWESOME.

One last question. It's well known you ooze greatness from every pore. Do you have to consume more calories to produce so much greatness?

Actually, I don't ooze greatness. That sounds somewhat icky, like something a boy might do after running too far. I radiate pure greatness from the inexhaustible font of my soul.

My soul, in turn, is powered by the life-force I tear from the screaming husks of H4Hers I encounter. I'm not going to run out of that fuel any time soon.

ROFL coyote! That is so funny, I nearly spilled my drink (which, for those who know, is an arrestable offence!).

It's great, thanks very much!

SO AWESOME.

Brilliant. 'nuff said.

Blah blah blah.... something about interviewing people who AREN'T members.... blah blah blah....

Hmmmmm.... personally, right now I think we have such an incredible list of great creators on this site - I'd personally rather see THEM covered before we start going to outside creators.

Saw this thread just after it was posted and only got a chance to read half the OP before having to go out
Just finished reading it (and the rest of the thread) and just like to say a MASSIVE thanks to MSB for making this happen and putting your hard work into it.
I love this sort of thing and seeing what these great people are inspired by and how they work.
Great interview,
Great new feature
And great first creator choice (donkey show for me has always been someone who you can look to for top quality and for me is the creator who first showed us/me the potential of this wonderful game )

Thanks everyone and definitely much thanks to MrsSpookyBuz for asking some awesome questions. It really helped with answering, obviously. Here's to looking forward to the upcoming ones and to making more levels that people can enjoy!

Great interview, I always wondered what his level-making process was.

It's so random tbh. I really just sit there and see what comes out. But with water coming out, I went to the British Museum today to check out some examples from pieces like this.

http://arteras.com/IMAGES/Aztec/Aztec1.jpg

It really helps just getting out there and experiencing some real world inspiration to get the idea factory rolling instead of just staring at the screen for the longest.

But now that I'm coming back to the states from vacation in England tomorrow and had a nice break from the game, it's time to get cracking with more level making. =)

But really, too many kind words and MrsSpookyBuz has done a fantastic job.

Hey donkey show, I'm so glad you saw this - sorry about the timing of the publication (you still being here in England etc.) but I'm relieved that you've had a chance to read it - and see how many great comments you are getting.

My only regrets? I wish I could've interviewed you in person. That would've been awesome. And I wished we could've included the Mm Gundam stuff in the interview, but with it coming out so recently I couldn't include it.

Good stuff though, I really enjoyed it, and my personal thanks to you again.

No problem! Of course the timing was a little off, but it's all good. I've been in a different city nearly every day these 2 weeks I've been on vacation, but it definitely would've been cool to stop on by and chat together in person. I'm sure I'll be back in England soon enough and we'll get a chance to do that. =)

Once again though, it's been a pleasure doing the interview and you definitely made it pretty fun!

WOW!!! Great interview Spooky!! And an amazing creator to boot! Loved the insight and the perfect selection of questions. DS is definitely one of my all time favorites, I thought I learned it all with his Qore interviews...but low and behold there's even more than meets the eye. Thanks for prying all that info out of him. He's a legend! Was a pleasure to work with him and hope to again in the future.2009-10-13 01:56:00

I think I was in the first Community Spotlight as well, lol.

Honestly though, LBPC has been a great and blossoming community since the game released. ConfusedCartman (who I have met irl) has done an awesome job in improving the way we communicate here, let alone all the other active members like MrsSpookyBuz, the mods, and the rest of the community. I wish I could be more active in the community and with the game as well, but having a full time job on top of grad school doesn't leave too much time for the controller in my hands.

At least I don't have to worry about creation deadlines any time soon.

I hear you loud and clear. It's hard to find a community that's half as engaging as either the game itself or this forum. I often find myself wishing I could spend more time actively playing new levels, providing feedback, etc. That's really the very best thing anyone here can for the community, is spend time in the level showcase just playing and helping creators along. It's something I don't do much of unfortunately, for the same reason. in fact, most of my posting on this board is done while I'm at work!

I agree completely, personally I can't wait for MM to implement the feature that will allow us to queue a playlist from a website. It will make F4F so much easier. Someoneposts a feedback level, you just click on their link to add to your playlist. Since Im only ever on this forum when Im at work it makes it difficult remembering which levels I want to play when I go home. I end up with loads of scraps of paper in my pockets all the time

Oh man, don't even get me started. A site tied to LBP, which tracks your stats, friends, hearted stuff, and the ability to create playlists. Also to organize your hearted levels, so you can categorize and make pages for certain stuff - a "survival levels" page here, a "series" page there, a "co-op levels" page, etc.

All do-able on an official website which you can log into using your PSN, and which communicates with your profile. Remote playlists, level categories...

Brilliant interview, I read this the other day and forgot to comment. Gee, The Azure Palace always has been one of my favourite Little Big Planet levels. However, I haven't played any of Gevurah22's other levels, so I'll be sure to check them out when I get my PS3 back. 2009-10-13 14:40:00
