Need some help with a couple of things

Archive: 7 posts

Alright so, I am currently working on a level called "Nosferatu's Abstract Castle" - kind of a wierd title I know..
But anyway the idea comes from my own consistant confusion of the two movies Nosferatu and The Cabinet of Dr Caligari.
So I decided to use the "abstract" setting from The Cabinet of dr Caligari and use it for Nosferatus castle.

That's a picture of the abstract setting in The Cabinet of dr Caligari

I have been pretty busy lately with linguistics studies on my university, so this might take a while and if someone
is waiting for F4F from me ill get to that as fast as possible, sorry about that.

But the things I need some help with are:
1. I am trying to make the scene from Nosferatu that looks like this:
http://panopiano.co.uk/images/gallery/nosferatu_gallery_2.jpg
You might see where I am going with this one but I want sackboy to chase a shadow.
Does anyone have a good idea on how to make this shadow?

2. Is it possible to make a material other than sponge grabable?

3. How do I make a cape? I mean make it so that it "floats" around. I know that one of the trees made by MM
kind of has this function. I cant find the right word but it is kind of "floaty".

Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

As to number 1, i take it a thin layer cutout won't entirely work?

Number 2: Yes and no. There used to be whats called the "cow glitch" where the properties of two materials could be combined. (ie: dissolvable dark matter, etc). If you search you should probably be able to find some. Alternatively, put a grabbable material around what you want grabbable, so you still maintain most of the look. Dissolve and polystyrene are also grabbable.

Number 3: There are a couple of decorations/objects that are cloth that move in the breeze. You might be able to experiment with those to make your cape.

Hope that helped!

Ah okey thanks, ill try that out for 2 and 3.
As for nr 1, I was thinking more like an actuall shadow. I mean if you could mess around with the lightning in some way [...]

In LBP the only light that is capable of casting shadows is the sun/moon. You would have to fake it.

There are 2 tapestry type objects that move and sway in the wind... one can be found in the thin objects tab, and the other in scenery.... one occupies the thin layer and one occupies a thick layer, the thin one being parallel to the screen, the other being perpendicular.

As for your shadow: Someone has recently started a thread asking for suggestions on how to cast shadows through a grill. He then came up with a nice idea that could suit your needs. I'm talking about the layer glitch.

Create a source of light outside of the three normal layers, and put a "mask" for the shadow in front of the light source. I'm not sure whether this would work or not (neither am I capable of reproducing the layer glitch, never tried so far), but I think this is what might deliver the best results if it worked.

As an alternative, I think your best bet would be the simple material cutout...

If your trying to get sackboy to cast a shadow, put the level high up in the air, the sun seems to cast a shadow upwards from the ground when a level is really high.2009-10-09 23:10:00
