http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d120/CloudStrife_ca/LittleBigNightmareBeforeChristmas-T.jpgInspired by the classic Tim Burton film the Nightmare Before Christmas, this level will feature a complete rendition of "Halloween Town". This level which is set to release on Halloween 2009 will be filled with familiar characters, enemies inspired from the movie and classic platforming aspects.

After a creative break from Little Big Planet and LBPCentral, I've been hard at work for the past month or so building my next project. Although alot of you won't remember me, I've put together some pretty epic levels (according to the popularity of my published works) Levels which include Pirates vs. Ninja's ACT I/ ACT II, Saving Private Ryan and the grand-daddy of my accomplishments... Starwars - The Battle Of Hoth.

So I'd like to announce my new project which is... Little Big Nightmare Before Christmas. The level is slowly coming to completion and has a tentative publish date of Halloween 2009 [Oct 31st]

Although we're still a few weeks away from the Little Big Nightmare Before Christmas publish date, I wanted to put up some teaser pics from early in the project development... I apologize for the image quality these were just a couple of quick shots.

A lot of people have attempted to create a Nightmare Before Christmas level, and this looks like the best one I've seen so far. I'll check it out 2009-10-09 22:46:00

Didn't you also make a WW2 jeep in a black and white level not long after the game came out? I still think that's very good.2009-10-10 02:36:00

I actually can't wait to play this. The detail looks flawless for the subject.

So yeah I had to post again. I plan on taking a little time (like a couple hours or 3) on Halloween evening to play Halloween spirit levels which I have a list, which includes the new ones just released in showcase, but I won't play them all yet til the night. But after LBP I'll be all scary movies/shows. Oh, and I have my trusty candy. Lol.

So yeah, your level will be the highlight of my LBP Halloween time since you said the details will blow your mind, and by the photos I have to say you're not lying. It reminds me of Kingdom Hearts also for some reason. I can never think of The Nightmare Before Christmas anymore without thinking of Kingdom Hearts, lol.

Okay, sorry, now I'm rambling lol.

That actually sounds like a wicked Halloween! I'm taking my daughter out trick or treating for a few hrs (shes 3 and is gonna be a monkey this year) then (as a responsible parent) I will go through her candy, maybe try and sneak in a scary movie... oh and at some point I'll have to check out the number of plays on LBNBC, I completely agree with you on the Kingdom Hearts/NBC thing.

I look forward to everyones thoughts on this level once its published, thank you all for the comments so far, it totally motivates me to create!

I did do a WW2 jeep, not in a black and white level, but with my own drawings of war torn buildings captured with the eyetoy, same one you're thinking of?

There were also Sherman tanks, Panzer Tanks and Tiger tanks built to scale... the level was "Saving Private Ryan". Expect the same level of detail from that Starwars - The Battle Of Hoth to be in Little Big Nightmare Before Christmas... also expect me to "up" the difficultly while keeping it a visual treat.

Seems I was thinking of another level. The Jeep had a mounted machinegun and when you grabbed it it kinda sprayed bullets in a random direction. I think it had wheels on the thin layers and it kicked up tiny bits of gravel (rock) as you drove over it. It is a short level. I do remember your Private Ryan level though. Your levels name is boring though. Come up with something better? There's ten gazillion levels with that name.2009-10-10 11:42:00

Just a prediction. We'll see how this turns out.

Just realised that this thread should really be moved to ideas and projects for the time being, just been searching for a non published level on LBP...

This is the level Showcase after all, cloud.

We're getting closer to a publish day for my Little Big Nightmare Before Christmas, everything has turned out superb so far and there has been a consistent level of quality throughout the whole level that seems to be unmatched visually vs. all the other NBC levels I've tried, although honorable mentions go to the current #1 in NBC levels "Little Big Nightmare Before Christmas PT1/ PT2 where the creator did a few things from Halloween Town in part 1 and then in part 2 he did Christmas Town.

I hope to maintain my level of quality right to the finishing scoreboard. I'm currently working on the boss battle at the end of the level and will hopefully have some new pics up this week.

I can only hope I have enough room on my thermometer to go back and add the last few details I've had in my head, cause I hate cutting stuff from the final product. I've done my best to keep things simple in certain areas, well dumbing things down in others and there are certain parts that are exact replicated versions of things from the film.

All in all I hope to provide the Little Big Planet community with originality, a decent challenge and a NBC level that is visually unmatched.

EDIT:

Oct 19/09 I finally completed the end of my level today, its playable from start to finish with a showdown between the player and Oogie Boogie himself. My thermometer is extremely full, but I'm hoping to add a few last minute ideas that will make this level that much more memorable, plus a few sound effects, score bubbles and prize bubbles. I think its safe to say that "Little Big Nightmare Before Christmas" should be published later this week.

Hey everyone, two months of hardwork have finally concluded today as I've finished and published my latest Little Big Planet creation in time for Halloween... The Little Big Nightmare Before Christmas. This level takes place in Halloween Town and was painstaking recreated using photos from comic con, the actual movie and fan art. You'll find many of the main characters from the classic Tim Burton tale as well a few of my own original ideas.

There are currently 6 unlockable prizes at this time and although I'd like to add more, the Little Big thermometer was once again maxed out with several warnings the level was "overheating" due to the complicated shapes it took to create this new project. I'm especially proud of the lighting/ camera work in The Little Big Nightmare Before Christmas, as hours were spent on those areas alone. I think you'll find this to be one of my most gripping levels yet and I invite everyone with access to Little Big Planet to try it out, You can search by the title "The Little Big Nightmare Before Christmas" or by my PSN name "CloudStrife_ca" feedback is always welcome and appreciated... enjoy the new pics of the finished product!!

Heres a few random facts as I usually add after publishing a new LBP level, just kinda interesting stuff that happened during the making of the level. 1. This level almost didn't make it after my PS3 - Yellow Light Of Death issue/ repair costs me the finished city Halloween Town, the level you're about to play was built a second time. 2. It took approximately 2 months (not including the first version before the YLOD) the longest its taken for any of my LBP creations. 3. It is possible to turn the Christmas lights on in Halloween Town. 4. I played with the idea of having one double life check point for the whole level, but thought it'd be a pain in the *** to have to restart from the beginning everytime. 5. Oogie Boogie's House was the toughest thing to build in this whole level, it looks disorganized but its very precise to have those angles come out looking like a "disorganized, organized chaos".

hm, the pictures made it look better =/
all the same though 5 stars
i noticed at the end that theres only 8 plays and rated 3 stars and shows that only you and me have gotten to the end, how sad
the attention to detail here is very nice, i havent seen this movie in years but i can still say those characters are amazeing replicas of the real thing.
only one dislike, the running back and forth to get the boogie children then back then all the way back to continue the level, bleh. lol its a very nice concept though, and after spending that much time working on the scenery i think people should see it 3 or 4 times anyways

great level, i think i could still have a chance with my entry though
good luck :star::star::star::star::star:

You know the funny thing is my g/f who never plays videogames just played it and beat it (mind you it took her a couple of tries) but she still did it, its not that hard... have people been spoiled with such easy levels that if abit of difficultly comes up they drop the levels rating? sad indeed...

The whole leading the Oogie Boogie kids back to the start of the level and then all the lights going from that grey-ish colour to on and colourful was totally inspired by Coraline, I love that scene from the movie when the garden lights up, anyways glad you enjoyed it... that was alot of time invested but I'm happy with it, I look forward to playing your level as well, good luck!

allright dude I just played it (got second place score.. yours is unbeatable lmao) so lets see, where do I start. eh I guess the classic "review" style will work.

so the Positives...

I loved the look of this level, you can really tell that you put a whole lot of work into it. there is alot of attention to detail here.

I loved the fact that it was a Nightmare Before Christmas level (the best one on lbp by a wide margin.. but lets face it, the others all suck)

I really liked that It wasn't all too linear.. I mean It was pretty much a strait path, but atleast you had to backtrack.

And once again, extra points just for Nightmare... One of my favorite Tim Burton flicks (other than Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, and Big Fish) .. the character designs are pretty much spot on aswell, its not just some crappy cut-out that says "ooo im jack skellington" they really do look just like who they are sposed to be.
...
...

and the negitives..

ok I know you hate to hear negitives, especially on somthing you worked for two months on, but without criticism there is no room for improvement, right?

Ok so the first thing I noticed... the music. I mean there pretty much isn't any. There is the meandering background song going on, but I could barely hear it. Remember Nightmare was a musical, first and formost. (I can't remember which one, but there was a track in the music pack that would probably work out perfectly)

Ok now some technical problems.
Right from the start the first thing I did was run to the left.. and sally's like "go upstairs and pull the switch to trap the oogie boogie kids" and I was like "WTF Sally?" you should do like a magnetic switch that will prevent her from saying that unless Lock Shock and Barrel are in the right spot..

Second I noticed that it is extremely easy to get by without fighting the Oogie gang.. just stand in the background and wait for them to pass you and the run by them.

Speaking of standing in the background thats another thing I noticed.. The background is almost entirely pointless as far as gameplay goes. all the enemies are in the front plain, and the back two seem to be decoration.

well lets see all I have left is that the stairs to Jack's house, although a very cool looking effect, were extremely hard to climb. And when you did trap the Oogie brats, there was no way around really, I'm not sure I tried and got stuck so I had to suicide.

My only other grievances (sp?) is that there was no Christmas, no Sandy Claws, and no Zero.

Eh a little dissapointing as far as what I had been expecting, but like I said, it was WAY better than any of the other Nightmare levels I've played.

overall: 3.5 Tear-Away Face Clowns, out of 5.

Thank you very much for the review Madafaku, this has been the most detailed review I've received on all the msg boards I've posted on so it is appreciated.

Although early on I associated LBP with a Nightmare Before Christmas style, this was not an easy level to complete, absolutely everything was custom made which unfortunately ate up alot of level building space.

I had played around with alot of the music especially the track I had selected trying different drum sounds and accompaniments, but the more I added the more the level started to sound like a bar mitzvah (which even my g/f pointed out) so in the end the track I selected from the recent "monsters pack" was stripped down to "bare bones" ...don't mind the pun, because it sounded like the darkest sort of theme that fit what I was after.

I did change up the music during the Oogie Boogie boss battle, to sound somewhat like the jazz theme from the movie, when Oogie Boogie has Sandy Claws.

I will agree with you the stairs at Jacks house were kinda difficult to climb it was done pretty aesthetically, while Jack's house itself was sort of dumbed down a little due to level size limits.

I think your best point is your point about Sally, I'd thought about that, but I had never really thought about changing it the way you had described it. At the same time I'm worried by doing it your way, people will throw the switch at Jack's house and not go back bypassing the turning on of the Christmas lights all together (the lights by Jacks house and in the town square light up) which is my "Christmas" in the level and your reward for trapping the Oogie Boogie kids, I know it seemed a little crowded there but if you hop on the same path as Sally you'll walk directly behind the cage.

The Oogie Boogie kids were meant to be a big part of the level and the Christmas lights were a pretty decent reward, but I didn't want trapping them to required for the younger players that try this over Halloween or whenever, this also goes for the people who didn't wanna have to back track but you'll get the "full" experience by doing so.

This was also a double edge sword when it came to the background being just mostly... just background stuff, for the most part it needed to be all kept on the back two levels so the bathtub could walk though the level without snagging anything (which is basically the halfway mark).

You have me on the no Sandy Claws there just wasn't room I was getting the "your level is starting to overheat message" by the time I was done most of what I wanted to do, I pushed things like Zero and the Christmas Lights in. The no Christmas is arguable (not sure if knew the dull coloured lights all turn on. But... Zero does exist! if you want to replay my level go to the graveyard and watch the top level, right in the middle, you'll see Zero's doghouse and Zero will fly over top his house every few seconds.

All and all it was a pretty fine tuned dance to fit as much as I did in and although it may look like I skimped in some places, it eats alot of room to keep that visual quality. Another little hint about my level most people might overlook, did you know if you tip the jar over at the side of the fountain into the fountain score bubbles will fly out of the creatures mouth, which was inspired by the fog juice from the movie and was also one of the last things I crammed into the level before receiving the warning messages.

But I just wanted to thank you again for your review, I have learned from criticism from LBP Central before so your time in playing through my level then posting a review is appreciated.

Thanks

Oooh, I must resist.

I want to play it so bad, but I am waiting until Halloween. Lol.

I have at least 30 levels on my levels to play on Halloween list already, with this level being one of them.

Hopefully I'll be able to play them all as I'll be watching some scary movies with frineds also, like Drag Me To Hell (scariest movie I've ever seen, despite the very few corny computer graphics moments, and I've seen about every famous scary movie ever).

But yeah, I'll definitly have time for this one for sure. ^_^

No problem at all sir, I was happy to review this one, and I hope it didn't sound like I was being over critical.. I tend to focus on what could be done to improve a level, rather that to just praise the good stuff (which there was plenty of).

and yea your right that is Zero. lol, my first couple of times through I was like "HOLY **** GHOSTS!!!" and ran through the graveyard as quickly as I could.

and I completely understand how the thermometer can severly limit what you would like to put into a level. When I was doing my Wonderland level, I did the Character creation first, then noticed my thermo was almost half way full.

and you were talking about whoever else that did one, and had two parts, one in Halloween town, and one in christmas town.. well you do end up in the forrest with the holliday trees *hint hint* would love to see a sequal. (not sure but I think my spelling is crap tonight.. freaking tequila)

I strongly suggest renting either the Exorcist and or the Shinning, either of those two movies will leave you at the very least thinking about how messed up they are, and my level will be waiting to bring you happy thoughts after your scary movies.

No worries, you werent too harsh... besides as you said thats how we improve, Christmas Town would be a fun sequel to do, but with LBP Portable around the corner I believe my next level will be surrounding bringing Starwars to the small screen, something Im pretty good at, checkout Starwars - The Battle Of Hoth and thanks again man!
