Do you think I voided my warrantee?

Archive: 51 posts

So.... my PS3 is the latest one to die. My son was working on a level earlier, and I heard him say "Daddy... I think there's something wrong" from the other room.

I went in and sure enough, PS3 is dead with a red blinking light. It has all the symptoms of a totally dead system (it's one of the original 60 GB deluxe models - I bought it the week it was released).

So, I'm thinking.... hey! Now I can get a newer model with the 120 GB hard drive and the slim look! Problem is.... my copy of LittleBigPlanet is stuck.

So, I started taking apart the PS3, however I got down to the Bluray and its put together with the little mini-screws.... but I wasn't going to let that stop me! So I grabbed a pair of needle-nose plyers and started, pretty much, ripping the metal case off the Bluray one metal sliver at a time until the lid came off.

However, on the inside there are MORE little mini-screws that must be removed to reveal the disc... so, I must wait until tomorrow and purchase a mini-screwdriver kit. Don't want to scratch the disc by being too zealous.

Anyway, its midnight and I have little pieces of PS3 to pick up all over the living room before my wife gets up in the morning....

So, how did your day go?

Lol, that end part was funny! Are you sure your PS3 was really broken? Did it have the Yellow light? I've been hearing quite a few stories lately about peoples Ps3s dieing, I somehow have that scary feelng mine will be next. =[2009-10-09 05:17:00

If you bought it that long ago, then there is no warranty.. My 60 died on me also.. and I also had to get LBP out of the PS3. I traded it in for a 80gig at gamestop.. they took the broken ps3, as long as everything was still intact.

well then, he's gonna have trouble convincing them to take it
either way, it seems like ps3's are going left and right here. i just hope it doesnt happen to me D: i think the only thing really left to do is just buy a new one, ccubbage.

and lol at the last part XD

I really need to back up my 60 gig.
Can I dump it on my PC linking my PS3 with a usb cable??

Welcome to the yellow light of doom club!!

It is a shame you lose backwards comp but besides that, look on the bright side and look forward to one with 120 gigs on it.

To be honest, your ps3 dying is the least alarming one we had since I'm pretty sure you are going to get home tonight with a brand new one already. You've got enough savings for that at least.

I just hope you had a back up of your stuff at least stored a way locked on your planet.

PS: good luck on the disc retrieval!! Reminds me of an introduction post I once wrote, "true" story!!

I tried ejecting the LBP disc from my PS3 once....I was not successful at all.

At first I thought the disc had rusted inside the system from being in there so long.
So in my infinite wisdom, I decided to take a steak knife and try to force the little bugger to come out.
But then out of nowhere the PS3 started shooting lasers at me in all directions!!

I quickly took refuge behind my (now scorched) sofa and ripped a piece from my t-shirt so that I could wave it around as peace flag or something.
Everything turned silent and I gently poked my head from behind the sofa to see if the coast was clear.

My mouth fell open when I saw that most of my furniture was floating mid-air and my ps3 was surrounded by a fire-red glow!!
Being distracted by this I must not have heard the swooshing sound coming in my direction because before I knew it, A ps3 controller hit me straight on the head!!

As a natural instinct I started to run across the room trying to shake off the now multiple controllers that had grabbed on to my face.
Screaming like a little girl, I ran through the back door into the backyard hoping to reach the toolshed.

From there, I grabbed a crowbar and started smacking the controllers like a maniac with all I had until the last one was in pieces.
I could not stay on the field of victory for too long though, for my destiny was inside with that demonic black box. This time....it was personal!!

I took a deep breath and threw myself back in through the window. Looking back on it, that might not have been such a good idea...
But anyway, there I stood...face to face with pure technological evil!!
We stared at each other for a while waiting for someone to make the first move.

A bright lightbulb formed itself in my mind when my eyes suddenly noticed the powersocket.
I slowly moved in on my target using smalltalk as a way of distracting him.
Alas, I had underestimated my target as he quickly noticed my intentions and threw the coffeetable in front of the socket.

Startled as I was, my cavemen instincts quickly took over as I decided to storm at my ps3 without thinking!!
Screaming like a dog with rabies I charged at my ps3, swinging the crowbar over my head.

Then I (intentionally, btw) tripped over a bulge on my floor mat and flew directly into my ps3. smashing that demonic box (and my jaw) into a million pieces.

My warranty was still valid and I got myself a brand new PS3 wich surprisingly came with an LBP disc already inserted.

...So long story short, NEVER EVER try to take the LBP-disc out of your PS3!!

PS3's aren't evil, they're just misunderstood.

I was wondering about this issue. Assuming you've backed up the Game Data, when you replace a PS3, do your levels transfer ok? Do they need to have been published? Oh and is it possible to just take your PSN id from one machine to another?

PSN ID: no problem, you just need your login info and it remembers your trophies, friendlist, downloads, ect...
BACK UP: your levels should transfer ok providing you have made a proper back-up
PUBLISHED LEVELS: Will be there off course and the locked levels are still accessible to the creator of those levels.

Should we tell him about the micro and nano screws underneath, or wait for him to find out for himself?

Oh, man, CCubbage! I hope you're not the harbinger of doom! My 60g has been playing up (gets tons of use with 4 gamers in the house plus the Blu-Ray) and I don't want to get a new one... too attached to my PS2 games. Has anyone ever had a 60g repaired? Will they even do it now?

As for the warranty - nope it'd be out of date, otherwise you've voided it by tinkering. Basically anyone who touches a console other than the company and it's affiliated repairers nullifies the warranty. That's how they ensure they can charge you the big bucks when you do need repairs done.

So I DID do a backup about a week ago, and had been publishing an unfinished project locked - so hopefully I won't lose anything. Also, I'm going to try to insert the old hard disk in the new ps3 when I get it today.

So, if all goes well.... then, um, all will be well....

And yes, I got the yellow light of doom. This generation of consoles is definately getting expensive, however - I'm on my third xbox 360 and now 2nd ps3 - but worth it? Oh yeah!!

I could be wrong, but that doesn't work I think.
Someone told me from the moment the hard disk is used in a PS3 you can't insert it into another just like that....who told me that anyways?

I must be extremely lucky, one ps3 and one xbox!! Granted, the PS3 is only a year old, but I still have the original 360 from launch (in the bedroom now, I have an Elite downstairs that fits in better with the AV system ).

Hope you get up and running smoothly Ccubbage

My understanding is that he PS3 harddrives have a unique encryption key to that PS3, so you can't transfer them to anything. I have not tested this in any way, shape or form though. It's just what I heard... or made up in my head... who knows.2009-10-09 12:11:00

Your right rtm...

Each HDD is "individualized" the moment it is formatted on a particular PS3 unit. An individualized HDD CANNOT be used in another PS3 unit due to (in theory) a unit based signature being written to each HDD.

Thats not very good but as long as you have a backup of LBP you wont lose the data. But to work in another PS3 the HDD will need to be formatted.2009-10-09 12:35:00

Ccubbage, I am so sorry to hear this!!!!!!! Larry's ps3 died during a party we had maybe a month after he got it. Someone was drifting in a racing game, and I guess they drifted a little too hard. The game froze, and that was that. Ours was also a 60 gig.2009-10-09 13:26:00

Well, I bought a new PS3 on the way home from dropping my son off for school, and I'm now performing the system updates and will attempt to login pretty soon. So I had to do without my PS3 for a whole..... 14 hours.....

This generation is definately getting a bit expensive, however - I'm on my 2nd xbox 360 and now my 2nd PS3. I DID buy the Walmart warrantee, however - so I'm good for the next 3 years regardless.

Yeah... but the new one is so COOL! It's quieter, smaller, twice the hard drive space, and the buttons are designed where it won't flip on every time my wife dusts it.

Might be worth the 300 bucks!

Problem is, I may need to confiscate my sons PS2 back from him so I can play my PS2 games....

Yup, I'm totally back. I think I was down 15-16 hours. I had a backup from 2 days prior to it going down, and anything else published locked so I didn't lose anything. I mostly thought it was humerous how I got my LBP disc back. Pretty much totally destroyed the old PS3. It was kind of fun.

Hmmm..... I'd say on average it was probably about 2-3 hours a day. However, there were many times it was accidentally turned on by my wife - so those days it could have been all day until I got home.

Hey Ccub, I was going to say.. Wal-mart does have those mini screw driver things.. I too had to buy some when my 60g ps3 broke to get LBP out of it.

Found a set at Radio Shack for about 5 bucks.... so now I'm prepared for the next time!

Actually, my wife was never crazy about dusting - but she goes NUTS over not having dust all over the place...

But the problem of her accidentally flipping on the ps3 is over - the PS3 slim does not have touch sensitive buttons. You have to actually push the button to turn it on or eject the disc - so MUCH better.

Don't know - it's the yellow blinking light. I've read and heard its from overheating and the chip becoming separated in the unit. I didn't really feel like waiting to get it repaired, and was really looking forward to the slim anyway.
