What are you most afraid of?

Archive: 74 posts

I have a homework from school to do, and in math I have to collect information about something and put it in different diagrams.
We could choose whatever it should be, and I chose "what are people afraid of?"

Results will be collected this saturday, around 16:00 (GMT+1)

Please leave a comment of what you fear MOST. only one per person.

A complete eclipse of the Enlightenment Era intellectual values of rational analysis.

EDIT: Oh, only one per person. Deleted my slightly joking follow up than. Let's just go with the one left above - although I come off so "stuffy" now without it.

Sorry, couldn't narrow it down to just one. I'll put them in order, but the first two are pretty much equal.

1. Death
2. Flying
3. Spiders

XkappaX you shouldn't fear death, in fearing it it takes over your life and when it finally come it will surround you like a swarm of locust. By not fearing it we are stronger when the inevitable time come and our loved ones will be able to cope with it easier. Thats how i feer but i thought i would share it with you.

Of course, you're right. ^_^
I should probably change my answer, because i'm not as afraid of death as I am of dying without making the most of my life. My mom died of a brain tumor back in 2005 at the age of 57 without ever doing the things she wanted to in life, and ever since then, dying at a young age without doing the things that I've always want to do in life is the worst thing ever in my mind.

Of course, this fear is a good thing. It's gotten me off of my rear and made me accomplish a lot of things. ^_^

True, but when you're standing up it feels like you could trip and fall to your death, so it's safer to crawl around :hero:

I've never really had any serious fears, but the closest thing I have is that I'm afraid of losing people close to me. It's obvious that it's a natural occurrence, but that really doesn't comfort me enough not to worry about it. I'd be crushed if I lost my oldest cat.

And this isn't really a fear, but I always wonder what comes after death. I'm not worried about death itself, and I'm not very spiritual, but the concept of forever makes me nauseous when I get around to thinking about it.

Losing my Love.

This, 100%. I've nearly died in a car wreck, I've been mugged, I've fallen into the water while whitewater rafting, I've been mountain-climbing in the alps, I'm planning to go skydiving, and this is me as a teenager off the paths at Yellowstone:

(forgive the crappy scan quality)
http://imgur.com/u03UJ.jpg

NOTHING even remotely scares me like something happening to my lady. I still have a healthy fear of dying prematurely (like xkappax was saying - I can't die, I'm not DONE yet!), but the thought of any of these things happening to my lady is gut-wrenchingly, horrifically frightening, so so so much worse than the thing happening to myself.

When she's on night shift I meet her at the train station to walk her home - but she still walks by herself from work to the train (only a couple of blocks, but it's downtown).

One time she wasn't showing. I waited for 30 minutes at the station in the middle of the night (should have been zero minutes), and was completely freaking out. I nearly had a heart attack. I kept wanting to go home to call people, but then another train would show up and EVERY TIME I said "she's on this one, I know it..."

She never was. I went home and there was a message from her (sent after I had left) saying that she was going to be really late, so she was going to cab home later. Duh, right? Of course she was okay. I had the classic over-reaction and was really angry at her, even though more than anything I was happy as hell she was okay. This is classic "overprotective parent" syndrome. But it just scares me TO DEATH, worse than anything.

Rollercoasters. I live in Florida and I've never been on one in my life. It's only a two hour drive for me to go to Disney World, Sea World, and Universal Studios and about four hours to get to all of the other ones.

When i see them at first i feel fear then there creepyness irritates me to the point where i end up converting to anger then spraying them with things that make them burn and tearing there legs off then putting them into the toilet and have target practice then flush them to a watery grave.

uhhg spiders

writing this out makes me realize i gots problems lol

I'm deathly afraid of...

H-E-doublehockeysticks.

Spending the rest of eternity in agony and torture?! Enduring infinite flames and millions of demonic souls?! Suffering the consequences of my devious and malevolent actions forever in fire?! And all while my Lord and God, my only salvation and hope, watches in pure agony and weeps for the millions suffering my same fate.... it's just scary imagining it.

It's designed to be scary! It's gotta be scary, that's the chief purpose of hell - scare you straight.

To be honest, most fears, even weird ones, have a modicum of rationale behind them - Spiders are icky, sure, but some have deadly poison, can easily kill a person in gruesome fashion. So it's quite reasonable in some fashion to fear spiders - it aids us in our ongoing survival. But with Hell, the chief rationale behind why it's scary is because it's designed specifically to be scary.

But do try not to be too scared of Hell, there are far worse things in the real world to be scared of (like random acts of violence, or delicious cupcakes going extinct forever) - as you grow older I think you'll come to realize that no TRULY loving God is going to let you go to Hell as long as you're a decent person - Forget about "loopholes" and Bible verses and many of the ridiculous "rules" some people will have you live by, and scary places they'll have you fear in order to get you to follow those rules - just be good for Christ's sake (literally, in your case!), and don't do it out of fear of hell.

It's a sad thing to define how you live because of fear - I'm sure you're quite young, and I'm not suggesting that you do this - but nevertheless, my advice would be to keep your mind open and remember to think for yourself, and always question anything that sounds too good to be true, or even too bad to be true.

Especially if it's clever.

And enjoy cupcakes, they're still not on the endangered species list.

*sigh* I was going to stay out of this one, but I just can't.

Yes, Hell is a scary place. Yes, that's the point. But, if you think that just "being good" will get you out of it, you're mistaken. The whole point of Hell is that it's a horrible place of eternal torment, weeping and gnashing of teeth, etc. But, why is it like that? It's where all humanity deserves to go. We're all jacked up individuals who can't be good enough to escape Hell on our own, no matter how hard we try.

Jack raised a good point about it. If you read the last few lines of his post, you'll see that God doesn't want to send us to Hell, like everyone seems to think. He wants everyone to spend eternity in Heaven with Him. Hell is our punishment, the only reward we really deserve for the lives we live on Earth.

I don't want to talk too much more about this, in case I get modded or something (isn't religious discussion taboo around here or something?) but there's much more to it then what I said.

I would have said that nothing specific scares me - not saying I don't get scared by stuff, just that there is nothing in particular that bothers me. I have no phobias or fear of death or ending up in an afterlife I don't believe in, I don't worry about horrible things that could happen, until they are imminent....

But this:

"losing it". Not recognizing the face in the mirror.

This scares me.

Meanwhile, my boyfriend is terrified of balloons. What?

that's funny, there was this one time I saw a couple of birthday balloons mugging this dude on the street. They knocked him flat on the ground, threatened him with knife-violence, and then grabbed his wallet and floated away kind of serenely.

It was sure a weird Saturday.

There is a cartoon from the guy who did the animation for the pop tart commercials that he made before that, of balloons attacking babies. They took them up really really high all serene and calm then dropped them, then started beating the crap out of other things. Thats why babies scare me, they make balloons angry.

Nothing.

i'd break down if i woke up into a room with white walls, white floors, no windows, and a bright light in the center. i'd probably kill myself.

also, empty boxes. you know, the ones you find sitting in the back of your closet, and you've always been wondering what you left in that box. and then when you finally get around to opening it, it's empty. that really scares me

I LOVE thunderstorms! They're one of my favorite things in the entire world. Anytime one used to roll around I used to take the car out and drive out to the middle of nowhere in Texas and enjoy the show on the "big screen". Now I'm in the pacific northwest, where nobody has yet invented the thunderstorm.

People are definitely weird about balloons... Remember the popular youtube video of the guy trying to climb inside a giant one? It's a classic, if anyone hasn't seen this, don't miss it:

Power sockets, lol.

When I was little and at my neighbors house, a battery in my toy car ran out. I thought that I would look smart next to my neighbor so I took a paper clip and put it in a power socket, then touched the battery to it, and the power went out. I was so embarrased lol. But thinking of it now, I'm lucky I didn't start a fire.
