J. W's ~ Wrath Of The SkyHouseQuake
You, a soldier of peace from another existence, are mysteriously summoned to a strange land not of your world. You press on unbeknownst to the grave task you have mysteriously been given....

*Defeat the Wrath Of The Sky*

PLEASE READ BEFORE PLAYING MY LEVEL

*Sigh*

This came unexpectedly to me.

I've been away playing Demon's Souls for about 3 weeks and been majorly inspired by it. Its one of the finest games ever made.

More on its inspiration in a minute.

Then i saw more clips of one of my most wanted games, The Last Guardian, whilst that alone is breath taking, i began thinking about it's predecessor, Shadow Of The Colossus.

Now to fuse the two.

Both Demon's Souls and Shadow Of The Colossus have a unique, powerful atmosphere that is haunting and yet soothing at the same time. Shadow Of The Colossus is beautiful at the same time too.

Demon's Souls has an unforgiving and yet fair, hard difficulty that never holds your hand. You have to learn it and dedicate yourself to it to find satisfaction and conquer it.

So, in the midst of all that inspiration and 2 weeks later, Wrath Of The Sky is born.

The starting hub. Return here for vague hints.

The place has an ancient feel but most of it is left in ruins by the wrath.

The Lotusflower. Key item for this level, they give off important energy...

The Wrath Of The Sky. This beast uses storms as a means to attack.

The Wrath Of The Sky can only be damaged by this, the Storm Chaser Blade but the blade can only be used if it posses the right type of energy.

More ancient buildings.

Here, The Wrath Of The Sky swoops up from behind the bridge, ready to attack.

The shrine to the Red Crystal. It holds the power of the Wrath.

Another example of the destroyed scenery, giving you an insight to your opponent.

The energy of the purple crystal is contained in these orbs and the Wrath Of The Sky will make sure the energy is not released.

Ok,

On the outside it may look appealing. However, i spoke of my inspiration from Demon's Souls, the hardest most vague game this gen....yup, i've incorporated that. So, just like Demon's Souls, i'm sure this will only attract a niche crowd.

The level is one long boss (Shadow of the Colossus). You must discover your strategy and this may cost you dying a-plenty. What i'm hoping for is that you TRY. When you died over and over on Demon's Souls and got frustrated but, then finaly did it, it was a satisfaction any other game can only dream of achieving! I'm trying to incorporate that here. Learn it, conquer it.

The Wrath Of The Sky is gigantic in size and highly dangerous. Use caution when manoeuvring around him because it could cost you a life... or 20.
I used a unique technique in designing him. I decided to only use the thin layer rather then a menacing 3-fat!
This would cater to my unique atmosphere, give a certain feel of delicacy (yup, menacing beasts don't do it for me) and whats more, allow me to manoeuvre it better.

I can tell you that the 2nd encounter with The Wrath Of The Sky (the section pictured on the bridge) is only a survival, just stay alive until he drops a key item. However, as an added excitement, this is also where you would earn your extra points to top the score board, and this entails swiping him with the Storm Chaser Blade. However, this section is based on luck and you may not be able to hit him at all as he will be out of radius.

The purple crystal in your hub can give you vague hints at times by returning to it. Of course, gaining new hints will become more costly as the level progresses because it will become more and more of a nuisance to travel back. Also, the hints will be erased after certain points so, if you miss them, your completely on your own. Hints cost.
However, you will be noted by the crystal when new hints are available.

This ties in with my atmosphere. Isolation, loneliness, upsetting, a great feeling of hopelessness. This is done with certain music, sounds, colour, environments. I hope its worked.

The Storm Chaser Blade can only be used with the correct energy, once charged, the Storm Chaser Blade icon will appear where it can be used, grab the icon to use.

and with that, the rest is up to you...

If anyone completes this, i will consider you a master of lbp lol.

With the vague hints, story telling, hard difficulty, i know i will end up with around 2 stars but, Demons Souls broke the mould and that inspired me.

I hope some of you learn to enjoy it.

The pace is slow and moody also.

any technical probs, let me know!

ENJOY.

Love the concept and I really want to complete it when I have more time.

Would it be possible to change the first checkpoint to infinite. My curiousness cost me some lives and made me extremely hesitant to take any risks. I wanted to restart but then didn't want to have to complete all of the tasks over again.

I hear you on mixing the unforgiving theme you were going for, so you should probably leave the checkpoint as is. I definitely want to return to the level when I get some more free time because the execution of your level was very original.

Great job!

I will give it another go later and provide more feedback.

Thanx.

Haha, no i can't do that im afraid for the reasons i stated. Thats exactly what i wanted, become to comfortable or underestimate your opponent, you will pay the price!

I really want people to play through it to appreciate what ive done and that can't fully be achieved until you finish it.
That whole, get frustrated and then feel satisfied when finaly done feel is present i believe.

I also want you to feel something for the creature and land you are in, finishing it would hopefully achieve this. I think you should feel some emotion upon completion.

I just hope this just doesn't get lost due to many people's short attention span on LBP (not here obviously).

I tried the whole, learn to love it. I hope it works.

Finaly, some changes:-

The Wrath Of The Sky now has more attacks, activated via my rage system. Swipe him too much with the blade and prepare to face his deadly red lightening bolt.

A flashing Crystal icon at certain points to help let people know when new hints are available at the Crystal host.

Some minor changes to the story, not drastic.

Good luck!

Demons Souls is just incredible. It brought back what this gen has been lacking, challenge and depth!

Im in England, just import it. Its out in america now so you can grab that one. I got the Hong Kong version which is entirely in English.

Cool, hope you finish it.

Hey Lotus! Glad to see you're back. I'll definitely give this one a shot - it seems like my kind of level

-------------------------------------------------

Just finished it! Wow, ...

Pros:
- You are about to become a master of atmosphere
- The overall visuals were well done - nice background stuff
- It's nice to know that you added in hints, although I didn't use them
- I loved how there were a few sequences to fighting the Wrath of the Sky
- The blood and guts were a nice touch
- I liked how you force the player to use the environment to stay alive (I had to duck under a rock a few times to save myself!)
- I think the replayability factor is between moderate and high
- Both the music and lighting at the end were perfect
- I'm impressed that you finished this in such a short amount of time.

Cons (& quick fixes):
- You need to make the speaker on the dragons tail invisible
- I didn't like the 'sticker' look of the building - it just didn't seem to fit the rest of the level. It might look better if you just kept the building 'open' like you have pictured above, except you would obviously need to keep the door.
- During the bridge part, the first time the dragon came up, he stopped half way. Nothing happened for a while, and then he disappeared. The next few times he worked correctly (continuously flying upwards and flinging lightning bolts at me).
- Some dark matter is visible during the scene where the dragon shoots lighting at the door of the building - although that might be because I pressed circle, but still, if that dark matter is only for logic, I would move it far enough away that the player couldn't possibly see it

Overall:
I truly enjoyed this level and will definitely play it again.

F4F - I do not have a new F4F level yet, but I'm not sure you ever left a proper review of my old one anyway

PowerShifter...officially master of my levels? lol.

I love the way you say "just finished it" like its no biggie haha.

It seems you see what im aiming for most of the time, i appreciate this.

Ok, onto your points...

Good:

1. Thanx! Well, i bang on about it so much i think i owe this achievement to people lol
2. Thanx, I have had criticisms on too much flat surfaces in my levels due to the fact they're mostly in doors, well, not here! Im glad you liked.
3. Yes, hints that cost and are vague. You didn't use them!? Master of LBP?
4. Im glad you liked the pacing.
5. Yeah, im still iffy on this, i didn't want it to be about blood, which its not but, i needed you to feel this creature was alive and bleeds and lives just like you. This is his home.
6. Very true. I think the only replay value there, is to enjoy it (maybe) again and to try and achieve a better score by swiping him on the bridge AND now, last section.
7. Im very proud with the ending, i believe it could strike an emotional chord with people. Either out of satisfaction or just general mixed feelings.
8. Between you and me, the time i finished this level is far shorter than said. I just didn't say that because people may get put off

Cons:

1. Thanx, done.
2. Tricky one this. Im looking into a better look...i may just leave it open as you said.
3. Ive never experienced it but, i took your word and alterd it, thanks.
4. Your right about this. Its visible for a mini second on two cut sequences, unfortunately i can't move them as they HAVE to be there. I may be only left with the option of trying to camouflage them in using stickers.

Thanx for playing and enjoying it! Much appreciated on the heart and stars.

Your right, ive been so into my game, Demons Souls and then creating, i haven't managed to do much community playing. I will finaly do your Myst and any new level you do no problem.

I may write up a walkthrough for my level if anyone really wants to finish it but, can't.

- Maybe cover them with a thin layer of clouds? That might work.

lol yeah I might just be a master of your levels. I don't know.. everything just seemed very intuitive. But that might just be me because I love games/levels where you have to figure stuff out on your own.

I seriously hope your level gets more plays - I really enjoyed this one.

I've just been told by an avid LBP player, lron2000 (not sure if he's here?) that although this has unsolvable minor tech hiccups, it's one of the best levels he's ever played and that comment has made me want to re-push this.
Powershifter was also highly fond.

I get told it's a level for a certain audience say how Demons Souls was to the old school, RPG, art and dungeon lovers.

So, maybe it needs time......or maybe i'm misinformed and delusional lol.

Best to read the OP though before stepping in.

Very brief points:

It's Team Ico and From Software inspired.
Time and dedication needed.
One long boss level.
Tough challenge but, learning makes it easier.
Atmospheric.
Story to be interpreted.
Aimed to stir conflicting emotion.

I hope it does find an audience. I will also beef this up for LBP2.

Hey, I played the level and I thought the dragon was pretty good but could've been more detailed. I liked the scenery but I was confused what I was supposed to do when the dragon soars by and then you go up the hill and you go pst the tower with the sword and there lies a tower and a boulder. I tried getting on the boulder, balancing on it and then the only thing I could think of was to run into the wall and grab it. If you could tell me what your supposed to do next that'd be helpful. Sorry if I misunderstood what to do so by playing it so far it seems like fun.2010-07-22 14:22:00

Dragonvarsity- Grab the sword
You will see the crystal flash after grabbing the sword, this means you can choose to return to the crystal host, as said in the tutorial, for some hints on how to conquer your foe.

Also, it ain't a dragon

Thanx for trying though.
