The Ultra Super Noughts and Crosses Game Show

Archive: 7 posts

Okay - the title's a work in progress, but basically this will be a minigame-ish, glorified version of Noughts and Crosses (aka Tic Tac Toe) in a game show format (over 3 rounds). Here's a couple of pics showing 'round 1' in its current, rather basic state:

Contestants enter the level and are introduced to the game/rules, etc then are transported by silver hexagons to the first round arena.

The game board uses switch triggers - 2 per square = 1 for noughts, 1 for crosses. Those switch triggers are attached to dissolve material separated into 8 units per side that represent the 16 possible winning combinations for each player.

When all three dissolve squares dissolve in any given unit, the magnetic key triggers, lighting up the winning row in the appropriate colour and triggering applause, etc.

This is my prize bubble platform. I tried to come up with the simplest way to reward just one player for winning - in one shot, and without using emitters as I would need 16 emitters to cover each possible winning combo... am I confusing everybody yet?
Since you can replace stickers on the triggers over and over, I needed to be sure only one player got the reward. And this is what I came up with: a simple platform that holds 100 bubbles.

It's attached by a series of 8 dissolve blocks, on each side, and each of those is attached to a winning combo unit. When someone wins, the relative attachment breaks and the balls spill down onto the winner's side (separated from their opponent's side by invisible dark matter walls). I know that might be crude logic, but hey... it's not my speciality.

I will then use some kind of timer switch to move the players on to the next round...

WHAT I NEED SOME HELP WITH is how to move on in the event of a TIE. I could simply use some kind of stand-on-a-button thing but I don't want it triggerable before the round is over.

If anyone has a suggestion that I don't need to be Bill Gates to understand, I'd be very, very grateful. Also, any suggestions on anything to do with it are most welcome. You can also say if you think it's a lame idea... I will not cry

Okay, maybe I'm missing something. Would it be simpler for the action that triggers the winning applause and lights to also trigger the bubbles. Then, if it is a tie, no bubbles. Keep the tilting platform concept though. Then again, maybe I'm not quite understanding. Still, the whole concept does seem kinda cool.2009-10-06 01:38:00

It's all triggered by the same thing. There are no bubbles if it's a tie... unless someone decides to be cheeky and re-sticker the board... hmm..2009-10-06 01:43:00

Okay, I went back and read more carefully. I think I understand now. What it the button descends at the end of the round that can be pressed in the event of a tie. As long as there are playable squares, the button stays out of reach, that way it can't be triggered in mid-round.

Also, I love the gameshow hostess in the picture. Very nice

That's where my problem is... HOW will the switch bringing down the button (or ANY 'move-along' switch) know the difference between all squares used in a win or all squares used in a tie? You can only attach one switch to another switch and I have 16 possible switches that could send the 'win' data to the prize bubbles.

I did contemplate making another 'unit' with 9 dissolve squares (one for each square of the board), but then that would be triggered in the event of a win as well..... tricky!

Actually, I've just thought of something... I'll see if it works.

What about this. Use an and switch connected to two red button switches, one per player. Put a message at the beginning to direct both players to stand on the switches. That way both players have to agree that it is a tie and move on.2009-10-06 23:33:00

That's a good idea, but how will I stop someone from re-stickering over a tie and getting the bubbles anyway? That's rewarding cheating : (
SO many complexities... will have a fiddle today and see how it goes.
