LBP Sherlock Holmes Adventurethanatos989
You play the level as Dr. Watson, the side-kick of Sherlock Holmes. Instead of perils, you solve puzzles and try to bring down one of Holmes's enemies, Col. Moran. I want to redo this one and I'm looking for solid suggestion. This was my second level, and I've learned much since then.

I'll have to check this out - I'm a HUGE fan of Sherlock Holmes... got all the stories Conan Doyle ever wrote on the subject. Your level had better be authentic! Not like that new movie coming out with Robert Downey Jnr and Jude Law. Tsk!2009-10-06 01:31:00

Well, 221 B Baker Street doesn't exactly match up with the description in the stories, but I do have Mrs. Hudson as the landlady. There is a Colonel Moran in one or two of the stories. So, have a go at it.2009-10-06 01:48:00

Okay - had a go at this today and it was fun! So here's some feedback for you (in the the manner in which feedback is generally given here on LBPC, i.e. congratulate on good bits, point out problems that need attention, etc).

I really liked the visuals overall and apart from the fact he had too much hair, Holmes was terrific : ) He's the champion of balding men everywhere, you know. The boiler room section was just a bit too dark, in my opinion. I couldn't see the detail of the boilers/furnaces and we were a bit confused as to where to go. Even a bit of red light emanating from the fires would be helpful.

I enjoyed the puzzles and they were quite tricky in a couple of places, which was good. Loved the Brougham/Hansom and the fog was a really fun idea. The coach ride was a little short - would've been nice to see a bit of London as we rode along, but not a necessity.

I played with someone else and one problem we had was my pal got in the Hansom and I accidentally walked into the fog (due to lag), so my friend jumped out to come back and get me at the most recent checkpoint but the Hansom was in the middle of the fog and we couldn't get in so had to restart the level : (
You could either emit a new carriage in that case, or if you prefer not to use emitters, like me, you could tweak your switches to be directional perhaps? Backwards when not grabbed, forwards when grabbed? Then maybe at the end you could emit a block to chock the wheels.. or something... OR you could simply put a checkpoint on the carriage seat?

In Moran's drawing room (I think it was... bad memory) it took us a while to open that door. We figured out it was the bust (which looked very humorous - excellent job!) but the chair was not quite high enough to get up onto the ledge easily. Then I pulled it the wrong way by accident and had the trouble of getting it up and over the pedestal, which i did, but it took a while. Maybe the pedestal could be loose as well and easily pushed/knocked off. I got through the doorway but it closed on my friend and she couldn't get through, even with the head... maybe that was lag? Playing online with others messes with things in your level sometimes. So she died and came through the checkpoint.

Speaking of checkpoints... I think that if you've got areas that block you in after you enter (like the boiler room) you need a checkpoint in it. That way if one person doesn't get in in time - as happened with us when I went through first with the lantern, you don't have to restart.

Overall, great fun and we really enjoyed ourselves. i think you could enhance the atmosphere even more with some sound effects (tolling bells in the distance when you're in the Hansom, for example) and I look forward to checking it out again after you've done whatever tweaking you decide to do as a result of everyone's feedback.

I noticed you played my Psycho Granny level... thanks for the comment! If you want to reciprocate feedback, that one would be great, thanks. It's way back around page 10 now I think. If not, that's cool.

Just played it and thought the story was clever and your characters were good. I also liked your carriage design and the london fog was an excellent idea for an obstacle.

There are a few things you should keep in mind for your next level design that I wanted to point out.

- try not to show the floors or walls of the level unless they make sense for the theme of the level. You may want to consider using the MGS background for the bricks in this one too. You can make your own floor and support it with a little bit of dark matter.
- completely dark areas are hard to navigate especially when you have to change planes. The area with the fires is cool but there's a few places where the game auto shifts you and it's hard in the dark.
- put checkpoints on things like elevators and in this case your coach. You can't finish the level if you die in the fog as you spawn before the fog and the carriage is gone. You might consider emiting another carriage but the easy solution is put a checkpoint on the carriage where it's safe.

Cute level though and I quite liked it. I gave it 3 stars. Thanks for sharing it

I thought the level looked fantastic. The puzzles were also somewhat difficult and fun to solve. Although easy I thought the desk one was neat. Also the characters were very nice and well done Overall fantastic

My only real gripe is the lighting. At some points it was way too dark to really know what your doing. It may have been a tad short as well but those r the only complaints

I enjoyed this level just for the fact that I like puzzle games on LBP. The only thing I can sugest would be to add some more puzzles so that its a longer level to play.2009-10-09 11:42:00

Thanks everybody for your input. I think I have a better idea about some things that were bugging me about the level. I'm currently in the middle of a complete rebuild of the level. I wasn't sure if I needed to do this, but I really think it's for the best. It's okay though since I'm having fun doing it.

By the way, I just saw the trailer for the Sherlock Holmes movie with Downey and Law. Not too sure about it yet. I have real reservations about an American playing Holmes.

Jagrevi, just play some of the others on your list first. I'm not far from being done with the complete rebuild. I hope I will have addressed many of the concerns. I'm also planning a sequel, which is another reason I wanted to clean this one up.2009-10-13 00:59:00

Man, I hear you. Although there's the case of Renee Zellweger as Bridget Jones who turned out to be brilliant. i don't think the nationality is as much of an issue as the persona they seem to be trying to adopt (Ladies man, etc). Not on!

Anyhow, that's beside the point. I look forward to seeing the updated version. let me know when it's done, okay? Ta-ta!

I doubt you are still working on this level... rumour has it that you are now planning a sequel?

However we just played it today and wanted to tell you that we really enjoyed it. Adi particularly liked the story and felt that escaping from each room really fitted the Sherlock Holmes style. He also commented on how well done the people were. Clarie completely loved the carriage travelling through the town with all the fog - very atmospheric. We did crush the lantern at one point and had to fumble round in the dark until we found the respawn point, but this didn't take long.

Let us know when you have a new one out, we will look forward to playing it!
Adi and Clarie.
