Books that are actually scary...

Archive: 6 posts

Anyone know of any? I've been trying for a while to find a "scary" book that will actually scare me, and none of the ones I've tried are doing it for me... I've read through an entire book of Stephen King's short stories, and nothing. This included Children of the Corn and Jerusalem's Lot. I then read a book of his called "The Talisman". The cover promised me the "ultimate experience in terror" (direct quote) but I never got even a little bit scared for half a second. Ever. Don't get me wrong, those were great stories and all that, they just didn't scare me. So, am I doing it wrong? Am I maybe just immune to literary horror? Does anyone else have suggestions for books that are actually scary?2009-10-02 21:25:00

The Road was scary, but not in a fun "halloween creepy" kind of way. In a nerve-wracking "oh god please god no" kind of way.

I had a fun time reading Neil Gaiman's Coraline. Assuming you haven't seen the cartooned-up movie, the book itself is quite creepy. It's incredibly short, and written for a younger crowd, but you'd be surprised.

I've definitely had some creep-out sessions reading HP Lovecraft late at night. The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, or any number of his short stories.

The Road, huh? I'll check it out.

I tried reading some Lovecraft once, but I couldn't really get into it for whatever reason. I mainly was reading for Cthulhu, but still.

I dunno, the Shining scared the living bejeepers out of me, but I was younger then. I was also reading it in the dark, alone, while I was housesitting for someone, so that had a lot to do with the scariness. 2009-10-03 13:11:00

I've heard that's a pretty intense book. Maybe I'll check it out sometime.2009-10-03 14:11:00

1984. Everyone in the modern world should read it.

It's not a "horror" themed book, but it's still pretty **** scary and ****** me off.
