Project GENESIS: Requiem

Archive: 27 posts

Hello all!

I'd like to ask for some help and opinion. Project GENESIS: Requiem is my next level. It's not a sequel, but rather a direct continuation from Project GENESIS: Prelude. By this, I mean that Requiem continues exactly from where Prelude ends. Now, while it's not necessary to play both parts, a lot of people won't have played the first part, and for those that DID play it, it was published a couple of months ago.

When the level is finished and it comes to publishing time, I don't really know what to do.

A) Do I republish the first part as a new level, and publish the second part at the same time (or with a slight stagger)? This may give players a chance to play both, but I won't and can't expect the players who have played the first part to play it again.

B) Do I publish part two on its own, and hope players will simply accept there's been a first part? If they like it, they might want to see how it all began, even though it's not in order?

C) Or does it not really matter? (This is a perfectly valid option!).

I'd be interested and pleased if anyone had any thoughts. I didn't want to make a poll for this because I'd like to know if you had any other suggestions.

Thank you

Ignoring C, I'd personally go with A, since you've made quite a few levels in since the original, no?

Not much help, but I'd be happy to test and stuff, of course.

Hi MrsSB. I don't know offhand how many plays you have on 'Prelude' but if you're not worried about losing the present stats and starting again I would suggest starting afresh with that for 2 or 3 days using the 'good old' republishing tactic and see if the plays accumulate significantly.

If and when they do then publish 'Requiem' while 'Prelude' is still fresh in their minds and you should get lots of plays from them eager to see the new one straight away and also lots of plays from players of the original one and friends like me and everyone on here.

LOL!

I'd pay you, no problem, but after your recent problems I don't think we should enter into any 'transactions'! Maybe we could plan a 'drop off' for the cash? lol

LOL. Quite right MrsSB, best not to tempt fate eh?

BTW the only 'drop-off' I do nowadays is when I'm in front of the TV. It's my age you know.

I think B.. It might not be as obvious there is a part 1, but if you mention it in the title somehow or in the description it might help. However, I don't think many read the descriptions. Especially if you are not the leader and in a group. Another thought is you could use a sign or magic mouth saying that once in the level or perhaps a summary of sorts denoting some of what happened in the Prelude?

Good subject as I will be faced with this someday and curious about what all is suggested.

Thanks jww, good points! This is the trouble with it not strictly speaking being a sequel, but more the next instalment.

Hmm...

I would have to go with B for the simple fact that we should avoid republishing levels if we can. I can understand republishing if someone insta-rates your level low and a domino effect of sorts buries your level with a 2/3 star rating. I don't really know how many plays Prelude has, but it's had its 15 minutes of fame [well, 7 days = 10,080 minutes]. Who's to say everyone shouldn't republish their levels every 7 days and fish out the best possible Cool Pages run, then?

It's not to say your levels aren't good, but there has to be a line drawn somewhere.

Thanks comph! I'm not really concerned about ratings or plays in this example, to be honest. I understand what you're saying totally, and I agree! I was coming at it from the angle of continuity really - having both levels there at the same time in players' faces - like wexfordian's Good, Bad, Sackboy (which I suppose is different as it was planned to release them together, sorry!). But, the Prelude isn't new of course, so I don't want to present it as such and causing perhaps a few players thinking it's a fraud.

It's just my poor forward planning I suppose

I would go with part B, mainly because I hate it when people re-republish there level just to get more author hearts, I have seen this done many times(I won't mention any names) and I completely lose my respect for the author. I just don't like it when people exploit the system, I understand your reasoning behind Choice A and I'm not saying you would do it for the hearts.

And I wouldn't worry too much, I'm sure most people will go back and play the first.

Ha! Took me so long to get through all the comments I forgot what the options were!

Firstly, great name. Requiem masses are my favourite type of 'classical' music and the name conjures up great imagery. It's a paradox that works.

I think you could either go with A, and legitimately re-publish if you updated the end of Project Genesis to advertise Requiem... hang on, I think you did that didn't you? My memory is so bad! I can't remember if you mentioned the word "requiem' as such...

...However, perhaps option B is preferable, if you want to avoid the 'stigma', but make sure you publish right near the first installment. Of course that won't make any difference if people access it from Cool Pages, but your levels are excellent and they'd have to be stupid to not want to check out your others. Just make sure you allude to the first one somewhere in Requiem to pique their interest.

Good luck with the launch. We'll be there! woo!

If I may jump in. I don't think it really matters. I know I thought the Prelude was really awesome, and I've been waiting patiently for the next one. When you publish it. I'll probably replay the first one before I play the next one just to refresh my memory.

Since my wife, who plays only seldomly, will often ask if there's anything new by Mrs.SpookyBuz, I'm pretty sure a lot of people are waiting for the next one. You could also put something in the description that suggests players do the prelude first. They should be able to find it easily.

I'm definitely not contemplating doing option A for hearts! I suppose I'm trying to gauge the possibilities of ANY of the options. Thanks for your input!

Thank you, BabyDoll! In a perfect world, I would've published them both together as new, but I had lots of problems with the first one and then got involved with other things, so it's been a rocky ride this GENESIS thing! I suppose it really doesn't matter, all things considered, but I appreciate you commenting!

Well like any of us except Wex could sit on 3 levels and not publish? The excitement alone would kill me and be a complete wreck to even work on #2 or #3. ...of course Wex does all 3 as well as zaps out yet another a week or so later?? I call shenanigans!!!

I swear he is on my list of folks to hate if I didn't like him so darn much. lol !!!

For what it's worth, publishing Splat III with a totally obvious continuation from the earlier levels (it's been 20 years...) worked out nicely. I noticed many players going back into part 1 and 2 to get the whole story.2009-10-03 02:18:00

Oh brilliant, I can't wait for this!

I think you should go with your instinct regarding publishing. If this next installment is as good as the first, I don't see why new players won't play them both.

Please hurry! lol

Oi, KoRn, I'm trying, I'm trying! I have intravenous coffee drips installed, I have high-energy drinks on tap, and I've got a "How to Stay Awake" training book right here!

I've never seen so many bloody wires! But, hopefully, I've broken its back and it's almost there! *crosses fingers*

Actually, with all that coffee, aren't your hands shaking vigorously? For god's sake, don't spill anything on your PS3 or your controller, I can't have this postponed! D:

If i were to go about doing this, i'd probably go with B and hope that people would want to see how it all began. Like a few others that posted, you should mention the first level a bit in the level description on it. But don't be too revealing. Just hint that the level is the next installment in a clever way.2009-10-11 11:40:00

Okay, final post. The level is finally finished, and I don't think I've ever been as relieved to be able to say that!

I'll post it in the Level Showcase just as soon as I publish - which is in about 3 hours from now (7.00pm UK time).

Thank you
