Material Innovation

Out of curiosity more than anything - are there any materials that you thought you'd never used, and actually found yourself employing?

Case in point, while I had never really expected to use the Rose material - it has actually come in quite useful. Sticker it well and it makes a decent "animal fur" material. Shrink it down small enough, and it's edges form an interesting rose-bud shape. Likewise, the top of the "Heart Box" wooden material, if you can hide it's face, makes a great sand alternative.

Of course there are some materials I've never even bothered to experiment with. I don't think I will ever find myself coming around to the Holiday Wrapping Paper material. I was actually relatively shocked when I found a use for the Wooden Mask material, and still, it was used in such a way that it isn't noticeably the Wooden Mask material on actual play-through.

I'm very interested to hear how people have found uses for the materials that are less usably generic.

Oddly enough, the crystal earring decoration. I used to look at it and say "what would you ever use that thing for?! And yet now it's the single most used decoration in The Crystal Cave in Autumn.

There are other things, too, like the cat from the valentines day pack. I wondered what I'd ever do with a bright magenta cat, but then I ended up realizing you could sticker it and even put eyes on it if you wanted to. ^_^

I know these are not materials, but they are things in my pop-it that I never in a million years thought I'd use.

Still interesting to hear about though, thank you.

The Arabian Tile.

I looked at it and I was like: "What would that be used for? It looks weird!"

Next thing you know, it's the single most used material in my WIP. (The 14th Dimension.)

Also, the sticker that I use alot (Now...) is...

Mr. Beaver Says No. It is surprisingly very useful.

Also, the decoration that I like is the Reath from the History Kit.

Keep placing it and shrinking it to make an awesome golden ring.

Dunno if this counts but... never thought I'd be using some objects, like the egg cartons.

But suddenly I wondered how I could make my GOTY level look more spacey, and boom, egg cartons found a purpose

Well, I used to look at almost anything that wasn't a metal and say "Pfft thats dumb"

(this was back in the day when little dead space was my most inspiring community level, xD) So yea I guess I can say that now, I hardly ever use metals. Unless, of course, they seem to fit into a cave-like environment... :kz:

I think this is the same line of thinking that occurred on the set of Dark Star.

I'm not sure about materials, but I used to wonder what the heck I'd do with the totally random stickers. But then I started de-stickering objects from the game and realized how to use them to paint stuff. Now I use them to make all sorts of wacky-looking characters for my levels. I go back through my stickers and think of what I could use them for.2009-10-03 19:52:00

My newest project is going to use an unhealthy amount of pink floaty.

Also, I was going to make a level entirely with underused materials - like the zebra sponge material. Nobody uses that.

... I forgot that zebra sponge even existed.

Also I never used floaty materials. Ever. HMMMMMMMMM...

The wood materials are epic, i don't usually use them cause i like the metals and stuff but the colors and little gaps between pieces are cool 2009-10-04 19:17:00

Yes, there are some materials I found myself using lately wich I never expected.

Some rock materials are just plain ugly on their own but combined with the right countermaterial you can really achieve some great visual images.

I mostly found myself using premade Mm objects in new ways though.

I never thought I'd use rusty metal in Sacky Potter, but half of the level is made using it.

I've also recently been using the savannah metal (forget what its called) in a sci-fi wilderness level. Never thought I'd use that combination...

I never thought carboard would be so good but I have fell in love with thermo saving and have used it for the ground the trees tha building, pretty much everything in my newest priject is carboard. except the switches the glass and the grabbable objects. Even the UFO's are carboard. which leads me to my other point the fairy light is incredible helpfule aswell.

Also i have used the rusty metal and snow ponge a lot in my back to basics level.

I still think there is some stpid stuff, Why so many spnges when you can get the same effect off stickering and why have all the different coulored glass when you can just sticker. Wow thats a mouthfull i could probably think off a milion more materials that i can't see using but i'll have probably used them all by next week now that you are making me think about stuff.

Because it's tricky to get a repeating pattern perfect, and stickers disappear after too many explosions or paint balls. Off the top of my head.

Plus stickers are purely 2D and usually really look painted on, the materials are full 3D with a sense of depth and texture.2009-10-05 13:30:00

Cream concrete is perfect for logos, since it doesn't really have a texture once you put stickers on it. Works great for colorful things too.2009-10-05 15:13:00

Comphermc introduced me to blue wood - no bump mapping other than the beveled edges and isn't grabbable like dissolve. I don't know if it's better than cream concrete - that has a little bump mapping doesn't it? Anyway blue wood is my preference for stickering now.

Skull metal has a really nice dirty texture on the sides and if you make it one small grid unit thick you can't see that it is skull metal at all - I used that for the flooring in the sewers, gave a really nice grimy feel imo. It's also quite good for fire, along with glass.

The barbed wire material also looks really good when shrunk down to single small grid unit thick - I'm pretty sure ninjaMicWz used that in jailbreak level (name escapes me), I've also used it in my CC07 entry.

Flame metal, stickered black = awesome. Best to hide the edges though, or try to cover them with thin layer material. Again see my CC07 entry (the logic box)

the VR materials from the MGS pack look awful for the most part, but as thin strips so you can only see the edges, look pretty cool for detail. See stevebigguns's digitized reality:the lab (and also my CC07 entry )

That's all for now.
