The Generic Halloween Thread

Archive: 46 posts

Alright well today is officially October first, and i thusly declare this halloween season open! It may seem a little early... but seeing as i started planning back in september, i DID wait a while Stores are set up, events are being planned, and of course everyone is figuring out what they want to wear.

Personally, I have two traditions regarding halloween.
1) I always go to Knotts Scary Farm with my friends (Its a halloween thing, you can visit a theme park full of monsters, pure adrenaline rush sort of thing)
and 2) I build a maze in our garage to scare the trick or treaters.
So basically i get scared, and i scare people. It evens out right?

So whats everyone got planned for the 31st? Or the month in general? Anything related to celebrating this spooky season.

I'm curious to see what everyone else does (if anything) and who stocks the giant candy bars for future reference

I'll be carving a pumpkin most likely. I have to decide what I'm going to do. My husband and I usually do video game characters. Last year it was a Sackboy!

I also always try to go out to tannersville, pa and look at the changing leaves. I've been trying to get my friends to watch scary movies with me, but they won't.

Yikes! Sounds like a lot of SpookyBiz MrsSpookyBuz!

I imagine we will be home watching spooky stuff, playing LBP and seeing if any trick or treaters happen by this year. We live in an apt complex so kids usually go elsewhere and never get any visitors. So tons of extra candy! I always make sure we get all our favorites since we end up with it all!

April likes seeing that one show Most Haunted I think it is? Usually annoys or amuses the heck outta me with these folks jumping at any sound. Sorta like Blair Witch live. Though I do love some of the places they go and the historian they bring in is really interesting. Just not one of my favorite shows, but not bad considering the season.. I do like it if someone has Twilight Zone marathon going then. Those are always great to see.

We might do up a pumpkin this year.. or maybe just help April work on a spooky level of hers.

Probably sitting on my porch slumped over dressed like a scarecrow.(Safe to say, we know where this is going) It's always fun to scare people and we needed a gimmick to beat our neighbor. The guy always hangs a staw dummy from a tree like it was butchered and lets it drop on the kids as they're leaving. lol This year I think he's adding an evil laugh sound effect to it.

I'm surprised the trick or treaters in our neighborhood don't need paramedics to get around the block they get scared so much.

October plans itself

That it does, that it does.

Hopefully Florida will cool down enough to enjoy it, still getting 90+ degree temperatures into next week.

Halloween is one of my two favorite holidays. ^_^

For the past 3 years I've been watching the Ghost Hunters Halloween special and scary movies for the month. On the night of, I make sure I've bought a lot of my favorite candy in bag fulls and snack on candy. Guilty pleasure. Sometimes myself and friends might go to a haunted attraction, like a good one. There's this one in another city near where I live that was almost closed for good because one or two people had heart attacks. But they are still open, so not sure what happened there as I have not been in recent time.

I love Halloween! I'm not sure what I'm gonna dress up as this year and I don't have any plans as of yet. My wife and I usually carve some pumpkins and have some friend over while we hand out candy to the kiddos. Just for kicks, here is my favorite costume that I've used:

Any School House Rock Fans?

HAHAHAHAHAHA!! Jesus Christ! Wow, that looks like one comfy costume, not awkward to move about in at all!

I LURVS me some Halloween. Also my favorite holiday. My plans involve carving a pumpkin, going to Playland Halloween, and attending the Parade of Lost Souls:

http://imgur.com/1xWTA.jpg

http://imgur.com/4WO29.jpg

Giant crowd-controlled puppets (imagine walking through a halloween crowd on city streets and in the distance seeing a GIANT MONSTER walking around, towering over everyone), a ghostly marching band procession, costumes and jackolanterns galore. One of my favorite times of the year!

The other thing I want to do is play some really good Halloween levels in LBP! I actually set out to play as many as I could find so I could assemble a 'best of Halloween' list thread... but I was stopped short. I just couldn't find many good ones, and had to assume that the best ones don't have "Halloween" or "trick or treat" anywhere in the title. Without a tagging system, how do you begin?

There was one good "Halloween" level based on the MOVIE Halloween. It's very short, opens with a cool cutscene, follows that up with a pretty great little autumn scene (jackolantern on the front porch, blowing autumn leaves), and then has some fun little scares in a house, and is finally followed up by a very frustrating chase sequence which desperately needs a checkpoint bigger than 4 lives. Took me 3 trial-and-error attempts to beat it. But this was heads and shoulders ahead of every other Halloween themed level I played.

Anyone have any recommendations?

And if not... Get creating! LBPC needs to represent the Halloween-loving crowd and make THE Halloween levels to play!

I'm actually thinking of hosting a contest for Halloween based levels. I've got a question into CC about it but then I think I'll set it up when I get his answer.

I was going to make one myself but I don't think I'm going to have the time so if I have a bunch to play that would be cool too!

I have the same reason as you - I don't think I'm going to have nearly the time this month to do justice to a good halloween level, but I oh-so-badly would like to play some.

*generic Halloween is my favorite time of year reply*

Halloween is my favorite time of year.

I just went to Barnes and Noble looking for a new book, and they had this whole center-piece of all sorts of Halloween-y books. Stuff about vampires (no surprises here), ghosts, zombies... It was really cool stuff. There was this one book that had stories about that kinda stuff (I think it was mostly vampires...) from around the world. It seemed really interesting. Unfortunately, I didn't pick any of it up.

Well, whatever you decide, matey Tell you what, if you want to (no obligation!), you decide on XP for a first place, and I'll pitch in for 2nd, 3rd and 4th.

Alternatively, just have it as FUN! Woot!

Ahhh... Halloween... my favourite time of year (Christmas is a close second).

Being someone who works doing props and makeup, I tend to throw a huge party every year and decorate the heck outta' the place. Unfortunately though, this year I am without a decent sized place to hold the party so I'm attending a few other parties instead.

So I guess my time will be spent trying to figure out what I will go as this year. I usually go for the scary makeup thing, but I think this year I may go as something with a little more humour behind it.

Found some cool photos from The Parade of Lost Souls past! It's REALLY cool actually to see city streets decorated for Halloween. We're all used to Suburban streets and smaller town residential areas looking like Halloween, but people like to do up their tiny little apartment windows just as fancy in the city.

Haha - those guys put up their demon house decorations every year, like clockwork! It's one of my favorites.

The raven-skeleton women on stilts is also cool. They tower over the crowd, have massive batlike wings, and super cool raven skulls.

The parade itself is a sight to behold. A marching band of ghouls and ghosts, often with jack-o-lanterns on pikes, parading around the city.

I know what you mean, the last place I lived in Texas was quite lame around Halloween. When I was a kid I lived on military posts, and often the communities were small and filled with families. Halloween was the best day of the year, because every-single-house would be lit up and kids and families would be out en masse, the streets just running with them. I miss that. It's quite different here in the city. There's very little trick-or-treating, but there are lots of "events", the Parade of Lost Souls being the biggest and best.

But seriously, the last place I lived, Halloween was just another night. We'd doll up our garage with all sorts of creepy nasties, carve pumpkins... Number of trick-or-treaters? 2, if we were lucky.

Ouch, thats no fun at all D: That parade looks very cool, do you participate, or just watch?

It's more of a festival. They close down Commercial Drive to car traffic, so it's just people filling the streets, and there's a city park called Grandview where they hold a number of shows. They'll have live "music" - nothing like a rock show, more like a tiny stage with 3 ghostly musicians playing very dreary music on accordians and mandolins and horns.

And then there are these fire shows - They light up a bunch of different things on fire and do various little shows, from flaming hula hoops to flaming sword-fighting, cracking fire-whips, fire eating, etc.

Then there's the procession itself. This is the "parade" part, but it's not a traditional parade - everyone participates, it's a procession of people through the streets, led by the public dreams society, who are all dressed up in ghostly garb - there's a marching band, the raven-women on stilts, torch bearers, and dancers. It's public, and wide open to everyone, so if you want to jump in the middle, tear your clothes off, and dance like a pagan maniac while marching down the street, you're perfectly welcome to do so. There's very little rhyme or reason to it - they have the whole route mapped out, it's all very organized, but the actual event has a certain fun chaos to it.

It's also extremely crowded - there are usually so many people that it's practically impossible to have a traditional "parade" where spectators wait at the sides of the street. It's more like a gigantic Halloween party on the streets. Which is very cool, but the downside is - huge crowds are huge crowds - and also a secondary result of that is: no trick-or-treating, or practically none at least!

You spent your Halloween at Salem did you?

Hmmmm...

WIIITCH!!

Use fire on it!! WIIIIITCH!!

But it does sound rather chaotic, what about the kiddies?

Not that many kiddies to be honest. I think most parents of very young kids keep them away from the Lost Souls procession simply because it can be so crowded, and instead take them into some nice neighborhoods for some good old-fashion'd trick or treatin. You still see some of course, a dad carrying a young one on his shoulders, for example. It's a pretty fun atmosphere all around, people in crazy costumes just out having a blast, I wouldn't remotely call it dangerous. but still, by far most of the crowd is composed of adults.

As fun as it is, my favorite Halloweens were as a kid in Fort Hood, Texas. That place is the end of the Earth, but Halloween for a little kid there was just a blast. They'd do "haunted tents" on post, big military tents filled with chainsaw-wielding maniacs and such. But it was just the explosion of kids and families in the neighborhoods that made it memorable to me. I think they try to keep family quarters near each other in the neighborhoods, either that or just every single military househould in the area we lived in happened to have kids...
