Using lag to simulate slow motion?

Archive: 10 posts

What do you think about using lag to simulate slow motion? Like a scene from Star Wars (this is only an example) when Darth Vader says "Luke, I am your father" Luke goes "NOOOOOOO" except in slow motion lag. Good idea?2009-09-30 17:16:00

i thought about that before then thought that the lag would increase when played online and with multiple players, so the experience you want to give to the player would be unreliable. Myabe it would be reliable for 1 player only2009-09-30 17:18:00

I've got intentional frame rate slow down in my Chroma Stone Chronicles: Part 3 Cerrulean's Gem level. It's set underwater so the slowdown helps make it feel like water. I like it and many people have commented that they like it but there are also many who don't care for the slowdown too.

I think if you want to use it in a level it's a perfectly legitimate technique to use but I'd say you should have a good reason for using it.

That is a valid point. I think mine is pretty consistent. Lots of players report the frame rate slowdown.

Seen it done in players levels, sometimes it looks cool 2009-09-30 17:35:00

The problem with lag is that it isn't really smooth, but it stutters.

Slow motion in films and stuff works by being filmed by a camera with a super high framerate, so that when its slowed down it still plays at a normal framerate to give smooth motion but slower. But if you are to slow down something with a normal framerate, it's no longer smooth. So I can't see it working too well in LBP.

Also keep in mind, some people have really bad lag anyway, and that could make the level unplayable to some. Its almost impossible to judge the efffect it will have on some peoples experience.2009-09-30 19:38:00

Something about this very premise strikes me the wrong way. At some level, I liken it to drugging an audience so a scene will be more exciting, or allow a food ingredient to spoil in order to give a dish just the right amount of "tanginess" - which, admittedly, isn't unheard of in some cultures.
(no pun intended)

We're introducing something that we, in general, despise, in order for it to do what it naturally does.

Let us remember too though that lag is noticeably distinct - we're not, metaphorically speaking, creating elaborate stagecraft in order to induce surprise and panic in the audience, we're actually jumping down there and hitting them in the leg with a club. Even if we accomplish the goal we specifically set out to acheive (yep - that's surprise and panic), we have failed on a more general level.

The player will know that it's lag, and they're pretty conditioned to have a negative emotional reaction to this occurence.

I can't see this as a good idea in any sense of the word. Let's not let this cat out of the bag. The last thing I need to worry is a trend of online levels intentionally attempting to overload my system.

If you could find a way to intentionally cause burn in on my monitor - that could also be used to create some "interesting effects" - but it would be putting it lightly to say that it's a violation of trust.

This has nothing to do with lag, but connecting a magnetic key to a piston, and connecting it to, set the mag key to Speed and making the piston go really fast, then making it go really slow adds in a really nice slow-mo effect.
But that only applies to pistons.....

no. it would be disasterous.... the slow motion logic would work best. and i'm sure people can figure out how you could make the sackboys run slower.2009-10-01 02:55:00
