Alpine Saga: Prolog - The Climb

Alpine Saga: Prolog - The ClimbMySantaAnna
"The Climb" is the first of three "Alpine Saga" levels.

You have to climb up the mountain, search for digestible mushrooms, avoid eating the fly agarics, stop for a snack and try to solve the mystery of Resi's lost cows. (Yes, I've used some clich?s and old alpine legends as an inspiration)

There are not much platforms but a lot of multiple paths and hidden prices.

The level isn't very long (7 minutes including all secret paths, 4 minutes without the secret paths) and it's also easy to play for newbies.

I just wanted to create a simple, but pretty introduction-level.
all

"The Climb" is my first published level and I've tried to avoid my last mistakes (my christmas-level didn't fit in the thermometer, my tropical island broke into at the middle of the level). Anyway - If you see bugs please tell me.

There are two "problematic" parts in the level: The butterflies and the bouncing fly agarics. Sometimes it works out really well and sometimes it's horrible to play. I don't know what it's depending on - if you know please tell
me.

I've tried to put a lot of the things in my levels which are important in my opinion: a pretty and new enviroment, a story, secret paths, prices and unlockable mini-levels (are still in production).

I would be really pleased if you could play my level and tell me what you think about it. Like I said before - it's my first level and someday I really want to create levels which are fun for people.

Thank you,
Anna

EDIT
I've included a new secret area where you can find the key for the minilevel "All you can eat".

PS: I can't find myself or my level... Hope you have more luck with it. (I've left comments on Sixth' and DaiDai's levels)

Text turns to stars if you use censored words. Here's a thread about it:

Odd Censored LBP Words (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=6932)

It can take a day or two before you are seachable if you havn't published levels before. Post a comment in a famous level we can search for and update your post to tell us where and then we have link to your level.

The theme looks original, I like that!

I'll play it ... if I find it
i'll try later and let you know!

Edit :
Ok I search for you level and your username but I found nothing.
There's a bug in the search tool lately,
so if you are new to LBP and you published your only level recently,
it's going to be hard to find it.

Better leave a comment on somebody's level (mine if you want)
so that we can access your profile by clicking your username on the comment.

Let us know!

Really lovely level.
It was fun as hell.
You have a lot of little touches that make the level very enjoyable.
It's really well crafted, with lots of nice ideas and effects, like the stickers on the snow sponge.
The design really remind me of South Tirol and Swizerland.
The characters are all real good.
I love the cows and the lady who lost them.
Loved the secret area at the beginning, really Mario-ish.
I encountered a little problem that made me restart the level at the exit of the secret area, since the grappable moving sponge can block the exit of said area.

Other than that I really had fun.
Wonderful "almost living" visuals, great use of VeraBee stickers and cool ending.

I rated it 5 stars and I hearted it.

Please F4F my level in the signature, and have fun.

Nice and cute level. The cottage looks really good. You seem to have beginner's exuberance and have put a lot of thing you like in this world. I like the idea with eating the mushrooms, that some are poisonous. This was something you could develop and use in different ways.2009-10-01 00:00:00

Just played it and I loved it!

I'm not going to repeat what OmegaSlayer said, as I think exactly the same!

I really loved the "HEIDI" theme, very refreshing and never seen before in another level.
Visually everything is very well done and coherent, from scenery to characters!

Some nice and fun gameplay ideas as well! And I don't encountered any majors problems by playing it...

I really enjoyed this lovely and charming level, and I'm looking forward for the sequel and others works from you!

:star::star::star::star::star: + heart + heart as an author

PS:
I really like the picture you made to present the level!
As a graphic designer too, I was planning to do the same kind of thing for my next level
And I also send you a message on your profile page about your question on the signature size...

Hi, santaanna

I tried to search you and your lvl several times. "no result". dahhhh
could you leave a comment on my lvl? anything....

Nevermind, I found your comment on my lvl Yeah!

Your lvl is cute!!! it's really cute and easy going. the way you used the sticker was nice. well-done on info lady and the cow.

the gameplay is okay. need more varieties of obstacle. so when people play your lvl it's not gonna be only jumping over them.

i'd love to see some dangerous creatures in your lvl. why dont you create some walking poison mushroom and put it in your lvl. it'd be fun

Overall:star::star::star::star: Good job!!!

@Sixth

Thank you for your comment. Yes, I still have problems with creating an exiting gameplay. I'm surprised that you're the first one to mention this.

When I was posting my level I exceptet that anyone would rail against me cause of my poor gameplay, haha. So I'm unbelievably happy about those 4 and 5 star ratings.

My plan for "Alpine Saga" was to create at first a really easy introduction level, a second level full of gameplay and a third level including a boss.

I'll do my best. ;D

Ok so I just played this level and am sorry to say I've no constructive feedback to offer you. The level was just how I likes em; funny and beautiful. The art was great, the platforming never got stale, and there were a few suprises here and there. Never heard the missing cow story before so that was new on me. So yeah I'm easy, 5 stars and heart. Am looking forward to playing the next of the series. I apologize again for not being terribly constructive here.2009-10-02 22:54:00

Here are a few minor issues i noticed:

The mushroom in front of the first cow is not glued down. I don't think it was intentional, so i mentioned it

I think this is a tense error, when you meet the girl she says "They've climbed up the mountain but never came back" I think it should be "They climbed..." instead of "They've", but i'm not a grammar expert

On some of your pastries, you can see the dissolve on the side. I understand that the sticker doesn't reach that far, but using another sticker to cover the sides first would make them look more like pastries, instead of green pastries

The electric spikes at the end weren't entirely stickered. You could see the electric unstickered bits from the right side of the spikes.

You had a couple of checkpoints in the mountain, i didnt end up hitting any until the end, were they necessary? There was also a visible global lighting tool on the way down. Also the sign on the right of the scoreboard is too far over for it to be easily read. Pushing it back a plane might help.

Overall, this was a great level. You have some great talent with stickers and design, the level is gorgeous. Like you said, the gameplay isn't always too innovative, but that doesnt make this a bad level by any means. 4* from me, i look forward to the next in the series.

For F4F could you check out "Just Play"? Link is in my signature. Be sure to tell me if you want more detailed/ more feedback and i'll do my best to comply

Hey Burnvictim.

Thank you for your detailed feedback. I've fixed some of these things.
- The unglued mushroom should be unglued. I know that this could cause problems but nobody mentioned it so I left it unglued.
- I wasn't quite sure at the beginning so I changed it into "have climbed". But you're probably right. I changed it today.
- The cheese and the brezel aren't green but the mushroom is partly green. I've tried to fix it as good as I can. Maybe it's better now.
- At first I thought it would be a good "snowy" effect to not sticker the whole spikes but now I stickered them properly.
- The checkpoints are necessery for the case that you get hit by a rock. I put the three checkpoints at the points where most of the accidents happen.
- Thank you for the tip with the global lightning. I've changed that. (Sometimes LBP doesn't save changes like "invisible". )
- I know the problem with the last sign. I've changed it a bit and hope that it's better now.

AND THE BIGGEST EDIT

I've included a new hidden area where you can find the key for the first "Alpine Saga"-minilevel. Hope you all enjoy it.

Liebe Grüße
Anna

Ok, let me congratulate you on your sig first - I don't know if oyu made it or not, but it's what got me to put this level top of my list of ones to play. Great stuff (and whoever made it should make sigs in general )
And I'm also glad to see your responding well to feedback from others and making changes to your level accordingly, not enough creators are doing that

Now for the level.
I was impressed by some parts and not so by others. I loved the character design, everything looks brilliant actually, great use of the stickers.
Ok, there's not a lot of gameplay but I still felt enthralled in the level.
Nice secret areas (I found three of them I think including the new one to the minigame.)
Really nice minigame actually too, not many people on the scoreboard yet though.

The level needed a bit more polish I think. It's better if the mushrooms you shouldn't eat are glued to the floor rather than set into them, as it doesn't leave an annoying hole in the floor when they're gone.
Also, the to be continued sign is a little hard to read (although it's obvious what it says really).

But yes, I really enjoyed playing it, 4 stars and a cute tag. Can't wait to see what else the series has to show us.

Great fun level. I really liked the Alpine location, the chalet and the cable car station - they were all nicely executed. I also loved all the charming little touches in the level - even those evil mountain goats who I thought were so charming and who did for me!

Great surprise ending too! Very much looking forward to next instalment!

Oh and I also enjoyed your bonus mini-game, though I'm not very good at it, lol!

The gameplay was fun. The level design was great. It was an all round enjoyable level. I played All You Can Eat and that was a fun mini game. I'll be looking out for more levels that you make2009-10-08 20:53:00

This level was very fun, I enjoyed playing the mini games and finding the secrets.

It was fun eating all the food but I couldn't eat it all

The ride on the rusted Cable-Car was quite fun, but I stayed in it too long and it went back down again which was a bit annoying, but it was my fault

I liked the dangers that you had put in, I died many times while trying to jump over some cow dung, but that was my fault too

The only problem that I had was that I ate a mushroom that I wasn't supposed to but I didn't die, was that supposed to happen?

Great Level, :star::star::star::star::star: + Heart for you and your level

Great level! 5 stars and hearts! I have two ideas for improvements:
1: Enemies. The cow poop is funny, but it and the mushrooms shouldn't be the only dangerous things in the level. This is a matter of taste: if you prefer your level at its current difficulty, forget I said anything.
2: Poison mushrooms should be instantly lethal. With grid on, unglue the mushroom and pull it straight up, out of the way. Make a copy, then turn off grid. Make mushroom a little larger, turn it to gas, then save this into My Objects. (If you already have a gas mushroom, skip this step).

Put an emitter on the ground, set to spit out a single, permanent, LARGER gas mushroom on the spot your poison mushroom is on. Turn emitter speed all the way down to .1 sec. Make sure the grab switch on the poison mushroom is on 1-shot, then glue it right back where you had it. This will stop the emitter from going off.

It should let a player grab the mushroom, clear the way for the gas, then get hit by the gas before he can get away. I ate one and escaped death, and that doesn't seem fair. I should pay for my mistakes.

Sorry it's taken me so long Anna but I have at last played your level.

It has some very pretty elements, the chalet in particular and the little bridge is lovely. Lots of surprises too, mostly gas when I least expected it! I died rather a lot! The mountain goats were very cute. Plenty to do and see, well done. Overall I thought this was a fun level, apart from not being able to see some of the gas before it was too late, and I gave it four stars and a heart.

Hi there SantaAnna!
I finally got to play your level (found it by clicking on your name in my level's comments section, so yes, the search engine is still missing you : (

I thought it was delightful and well rounded. It looked beautiful and there were so many little touches (like the chalet, the bridge at the end of the cable car and the sticker work in general) that elevated it visually, so well done. It felt increasingly cold as I ventured upwards. I loved the secret areas.. could only find 2, is that right? Your characters and creatures were very cute and I loved the lethal methane at the back of the cows! Very funny... same with the dung. The surprise ending was definitely a surprise as I expected to keep going up!

Your gameplay was good, some really tricky bits like those bouncy mushrooms (particularly the lower one which I kept sliding off into gas in the gap) and the mushrooms right before the cable car. The gas on those was hard to see and I lost quite a few points on them, but that's my stupid fault. Also, some of the locations for point bubbles made them quite tantalizingly elusive which made me want to go back and play again (which I did).

Now, some issues I had (don't panic.. there weren't many): One of your cupcakes still has the sound switch visible, before I forget. It's in the back layer so you probably didn't notice it.
I was a little disappointed that the 2 mountain goats didn't offer any kind of gameplay. I thought maybe they'd move or shoot bubbles out their butts like the cows, but alas, no. It's not essential, of course. just seemed out of keeping with the rest of the creatures/organic matter.

The fact that the level ended before anything else was resolved about the missing cows made it feel slightly incomplete, even though I knew this was a prologue. When I thought about if afterwards I figured that's the continuing story, but as there was no other reference to them (speech bubble dialogue, footprints... whatever) it almost seemed like that 'task' had been forgotten. Now I'm possibly the only person who thought this so don't rush to change anything on my account... just telling you what i was thinking as I played. I was also thinking "so the cows got on the cable car?". LOL.

There was some kind of camera issue when on the cable car. My sackgirly was very shaky, but the whole screen was too in a couple of spots. It happened each time I played. Has anyone else had that problem?

Well, I think that's it. I agree with Coxy that the 'to be continued' sign could be a little more visible.

No, hang on! I can't remember there being any dialogue from that elf in the secret area... was there? if not, perhaps you could put some interaction down there to make the moment with him a little longer. he's so cute. Maybe I'm forgetting, though.

And that's all! Fantastic job, SantaAnna xox
I gave it 4 stars and hearted it, and labelled it FUN! Thanks for all your hard work ; )

There was also one spot between the log piles in front of the chalet, that looked like it should have been a secret area, but i couldn't get it to open up. There's a break in the floor. Did i miss something? If not, that's confusing.

Hey Babydoll.

Thank you so much for your comprehensive review. I really appreciate it.
Yes, under the chalet is a secret area where you can get a key for the first mini-level.

The mountain goats have a really bad breath, so sometimes it's lethal.
But yes, you're right - I still have problems with creating interesting creatures.

The thing with the sudden end and the dwarf will be revealed in the second level.

Greetings, Anna

PS: It's true... cows are able to climb to the highest mountain, even when you don't know how. I was really surprised when I climbed up a really steep slope just to find cow dung up there. Haha.

Right! Now I'm going to have to go back and see what I missed!!!. : ( Obviously not being too thorough!). Okay, will look forward to further revelations in the next chapter : ) yes, I've actually heard that even domestic cows can climb steep terrain, even stairs, but they can't climb down again!! Hey Anna! So I finally find ur level!
and first off I gotta say, great job! It's a nice change of pace for me since it's a very bright and happy kinda level. I really appreciate the details and visual design of this level. It almost reminds me of an Mm level. The gameplay was nice and varied and kept me entertained. I also like that u used your sense of humor by making the cow's behind a hazard. Classic! Let's not forget the poo as well! lol
Even thought you took us from grasslands to underground areas and then to the peak, u somehow managed to keep the same style. Very good job! Let me know whenever the continuation is out! Keep it up!

When u get a chance, let me know what u think of The Descent 2.. You'll see what I mean by "change of pace" buahaha
