Do you run or take it slow?

Archive: 20 posts

It's come to my attention that alot of gamers are in a hurry.... for no apparent reason!!!!!

Probably because there are so many games out there to play and no enough time to play them all.

Patience is key to success... then again time is money my friend!

Moving on!

When you enter a level do you just continuously run through it until you die?
Or do you just take your time and take a stroll, and once you've come across an obstacle, you first analyze it and think of your first steps?

I find myself running all the time in LBP. Although i do stop when i find something interesting... or when i die.

Run, walking is to slow.

Although I usually walk when I play with friends.

I charge through, infinite life checkpoints have kind of ruined the threat of not being able to finish the level. I stop and look at nice visuals though, or impressive mechanics.2009-09-29 10:21:00

I'm forced to run through as time doesn't wait for you and there is too much too see and too little time.
I do take it slowly when I'm in multiplayer though.

Kaz Hirai at TGS 2009:
"LBP has 2 millions users' created levels. If you play for 6 hours every day you will need 35 years to play them all"

He throw the numbers out of his ... since I don't know if we had already reached 2 millions, and you would play every level in 1,6 minutes...but...you have to rush through them.

It depends on the level. A level with loads of detail like a Mars Attack level or Starcruiser will be played slowly, because I like to examine and explore. Survival challenges and platformers are levels that I can run through and hopefully not miss anything.2009-09-29 11:44:00

Depends on what the designer forces me to do. If it's smooth, flowing gameplay I will run through it (unless I die) if he breaks the flow at certain points I won't run through it.2009-09-29 11:57:00

I play to the setting of the level, if the level starts with sackboy having a causal chat with an NPC I'll walk blissfully unaware of the events ahead. Then upon finding the event, I'll break into a run like my ace depended on it. lol

Should the level start in a frantic setting (or a survival challenge) I will start running the moment I exit the chechpoint.

I usually charge through as fast as practical... sometimes that means I have to slow down to figure out an obstacle, it's rare that I've encountered visuals I actually had to stop to appreciate... maybe this teaches me something for my own levels?

I notice I tend to have a room or two in each of my newer levels and levels in progress that are mostly eye candy... I guess the player won't really stop and appreciate the hard work that went into them? Like my robot bunny assembly line, etc. :O

When playing on my own I take my time to enjoy the scenery and look for secrets... plus I suck at jumping (quiet goldenclaw!) so I need to slow things down a bit for those areas that are tricky to navigate.

For some reason I feel the need to rush through levels when playing with other people online. It's like I'm worried they will get impatient if I don't keep up. While it's fun playing online with folks, it kind of ruins my gameplay in some respects because of this need for speed through levels.

I've made note of this before...

( and although I am making these statements, I understand they are in fact blanket statements, and do not hold true for everyone... but )

Todays video game player rushes forth. There is no consequence. Why not?

Ahhhh, these consoles have changed so very much. (Not always for the best either.) Imagine having to wait to play a video game. It always bothers me a little deep-down somewhere, when players just start bandying-about, without even a thought to their surroundings... there is no comprehension or understanding.

Anyone who grew up in the "Golden Age of Coin Operated Arcades" knows the consequence.

Knows the darkened caverns; the smells, the flashing lights, the paisley carpet... there is, or rather was, a dire consequence to moving too hastily. Not studying your opponent, not studying the machine, not becoming familiar with your enviornment... your precious quarters and the time it may take to get back to the head of the line...

The infamy associated with being number one, the 'king of ...', and sadness of watching those initials fall faster through the ranks than Casey Kassems' last countdown...

...so keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars! Try to be patient and take time to smell the level... by and large, if I want you to race I'll put up the gates! Otherwise, you're likely missing the point.

It's the difference between beating a tomb raider game... and playing a tomb raider game; finding 90% of the secrets and not buying or relying on a walkthrough, and actually remembering each time you died.

My opinion is extremely simple:

If I paid for playing this, why would I rush through? It's all about the journey and not "reaching the end". I will look at it, experience it, search, jump, gaze at the beautiful, I will ENJOY it. Because I pay to "feel" something, not making my list of achievement bigger.

There's alot of people simply not enjoying life. My paragraph there could fit with about any form of entertainment or art. So many people missing the point...

I like to take my time and look at stuff. I don't often walk, but I also don't plow through levels. I feel that if someone made a really nice looking level, I should at least look at it. If it's a race level, then I go as fast as possible.2009-09-29 17:59:00

I like to take my time, especially with levels in the Level Showcase so that I can given solid feedback. This is one of the reason I prefer to play alone. When I have a friend, I kind of feel rushed or that I'm holding the rest of the group up.2009-09-29 19:02:00

Sometimes i'm in the mood for looking around, others I'm in the mood for charging through. I tend to lean towards pace if I'm honest though, but it very much varies.2009-09-29 19:08:00

I think it depends on how much the level is pushing me. For instance, with "Snakes on a Dame" I originally was taking it slow.... but then the point bubble combos were added. Then I started trying desparately not to end the combos.

Also, if a creator adds a race AND point bubble combinations AND great non-frustrating gameplay ("The Kings Colorful Race levels!!!!") I'm trying to be a bullet!

Now, if it's a beautiful level with an intriguing story ("The Perpetual Distance", "Gothic Reverie") I take it slow and look in all the nooks and crannies.

With the MM levels I go at it like a bull in a china shop and die a lot. With the user created levels I tend to take my time hunting for secrets, admiring the scenery or trying to break things.2009-09-29 21:21:00

running as in running? or doing the tiptoe thing? I usually explore a level unless its a mini-game/survival or race it's fun to explore find bugs and sometimes even break the level. Yes I'm a flaw finder actually if you want me to test your level for bugs ask me 2009-09-29 23:54:00
