Final Fantasy Games

So, since a couple of us derailed the FFXIII thread with talk of all the other FF games, I figured that someone should make a general Final Fantasy thread to talk about the series as a whole and not derail any more threads. Sound like a good idea?2009-09-28 21:44:00

What...? No, I mean I looked it up on the internet months ago >_>. I have a problem with not reading stories, especially for RPGs. The only RPG I played without knowing the story for was Tales of Symhponia 2, and I beat that in TWO DAYS. Yeah, 22 hours in two days... <_>

Anyway... that did depress me, but because...

anyway, it was my fault :/

It's far away from my favorite, but it is an amazing entry. My problem with 9 is that the farther along you go, the less engaging and original the story seems to become. I just wasn't really into the weird J-RPG stuff that comes up later in the game.

But the beginning - Oh my God, the beginning of that game is among the greatest I've EVER played in any game to date. I love the "theater troupe" story, I love the events in Alexandria, it's such a grand, magical, entertaining adventure story, and you really feel the huge events being set in motion. And then the flying theater ship descending into "the mist"... Oh my GOD was that game's first act a masterpiece.

My all-time favorite is and likely always will be FF6. Don't get me started on this one. Or do.

the incredible art (the game for once actually FIT the mood of Amano's stunning concept art), the best story and characters in Final Fantasy history, as well as the best music.

Amano's textures actually translated really well to the game itself - in the steaming smokestacks and falling snow of Narshe, and the stormy towers of Zozo, and a phantom train rumbling down old rails in a ghostly forest.

The game is just incredible. It's an epic, it's opera, it's melodrama, it's a classic, beautiful, incredible mythos about powerful themes. Like Fumito Ueda's games, I think FF6, moreso than any other entry in the series, is poetry as far as videogames go.

Who can forget the Opera scene, where the game itself seems to admit to its own operatic ambition:

Or the despair of this lonely cliff:

Or the phantom train, at once beautiful and terrifying, and a symbol of tragedy and loss:

And how is it that FF6 boasts both the largest cast of playable characters in any FF to date, and also seems to characterize them the most? Moreso than in the later games, we spend special time with every individual of 6's ensemble, we learn and experience their dreams and backstories, we really come to know them. They all, in their own way and own time, experience loss and despair. The game lacks a solid protagonist, instead splitting its story amongst this massive troupe. It's a huge departure, but somehow it works amazingly well, and you find yourself deeply connected to these characters.

Just before finishing here, I'd like to mention again the music. Nobuo Uematsu has been doing music for this series since the beginning, but I don't think he ever topped the score for 6. If you haven't played this game, (or hell, even if you have) please play the music below and view the images I posted above, and ponder the emotional scale and rich experience of this game, and try to keep yourself from wanting to play through it right on the spot.

Terra's theme, the closest thing to the game's overall theme, has haunted me my entire life since I first heard it when I played this on the Super Nintendo:

YouTube - Nobuo Uematsu FFVI Terra Theme Piano Version

And this VERY distinctive Final Fantasy tune, a town theme that will instantly resonate with any fan of the series: Kids Run Through the City Corner.

If you haven't been able to tell so far, I'm as big a fan of this game as they come, and if you're a FF fan and haven't played it, go hunt it down IMMEDIATELY. Don't just sit down and play it either - Do yourself a favor and really settle into it, live in its world for the duration of the game.

Exactly!! I for one loved it all the way through as it remains my favourite Final Fantasy to date.
I loved the characters, adored the music and have played through it many times over the years.

Personally, I have hated pretty much each FF game with voice acting so far.
It just doesn't sit well with me in this particular series.

Thanksgiving 2000, November. I remember that so well because of this game. The image of the little Black Mage wandering innocently through the streets of Alexandria, and the Theater troupe's airship's descent into the city struck me, and I felt there could be no better game to play in the Autumn. For whatever reason. No logic to it, it just felt like this was a November game.

It is strange how the newer games, complete with voice acting and animated facial performances, have been unable to engage me emotionally on the same level that the older games did. I don't remotely expect XIII to do likewise, based on the aesthetics alone. Summon creatures turn into giant bad-*** motorbikes that you ride into battle? No thanks. Little Vivi, with his innocent waddle and heart-breakingly tragic tale, is perhaps the most endearing little character I've ever met in a videogame. Give me that over the newer stuff any day.

I'm a pretty big FF fan myself. I like the analogy of comparing FFVI to an opera. I hadn't thought of it that way before, but it makes perfect sense in retrospect.

FFIX is easily one of my favorites, it has so much going for it that I won't list it all here. I could easily play the opening sword duel over and over for hours. I thought the theme they chose fit perfectly.

FFV is my all time favorite though. The story is a throwback to the classic "chosen warriors of light", yet with characters that have an explored backstory and personality. I also really loved the music, the ending theme ranks among one of my favorites in the FF series.

I wasn't too fond of FFX. Not because of the voice acting, but simply because the story and gameplay weren't engaging enough for me.

I enjoyed FFXII though, but it could have done without some of the gameplay choices they made relating to item drops and treasure chests. I also kind of wish they had picked Basch, Balthier or even Ashe as the main character. I understand what they were going for with Vaan, but the other characters he meets are so much more interesting. Yiazmat was also a ridiculous optional boss, they could easily have made it just as challenging with less HP so it would feel less of a neverending chore to beat.

Anyway, I'm going to be late for work at this rate, so I'll leave it at that for now.

Well, guys, I have to say it. The DS remake of Final Fantasy III is simply amazing. Granted, the story isn't exactly the strongest ever, but it's compelling enough to make me want to play. Not to mention the amazing way they implemented the job system for this game. I don't even know why I like it so much. There's just a charm about it that I really like. Plus, the game is challenging in that there's a set number of Phoenix Downs in the world (All in chests, etc) and when you use them up, you're done. No shops have them, nothing. It really places an emphasis on strategy and levels and stuff. Iunno, maybe I'm making this up, but it seems to work for me.2009-09-30 20:55:00

The original FFIII was a pretty tough game, and the DS remake is just as tough, if not more. Originally, the characters didn't have any names, or really any kind of characterization as far as the story went. They did well to change that for the DS remake ultimately.

I liked the job system in the game myself. At the end game you can... no, you *must* customize your team to be as efficient as possible. The final boss is no pushover and requires constant healing of the entire party. Needless to say that the first time I attempted the final boss I was obliterated, since I had trouble just beating the regular monsters in the final dungeon.

I haven't gotten all the way to the end of the game on the DS version, but I intend to once I get myself a DS and the game.

I was about four hours into the game or so when I realised that I only had 2 Phoenix Downs, so I restarted. This time, I just made it to the cave with the vikings. I'm really trying to work on being at least 2 or 3 levels overleveled so that I won't be wasting all my Downs on one boss fight.2009-09-30 21:48:00

7 is my favourite because it was the first one I played all the way through but I recently played through 6 and I agree that it is the most epic FF with probably the best music. A remake would be totally insane. I should add I've not played through 4 or 5. Only fired them up for a few minutes. I should play those. They're classics like the other FF's.2009-09-30 22:34:00

FF VI was the most compelling of the series I've played, I've really enjoyed every minute of it. The story and characters were amazing. I agree, that this game has the best that Nobuo has to offer. I really loved his work in this game.

But the most gameplay I've put into one of the series was FF IX, I made it a priority to 100% the game, which I did.
The story behind Vivi was really sad and to go through that with him was an experience to remember.

I enjoy the tactic games, but Final Fantasy 6 is by far my favorite. I just love the in-depth story of so many characters. Plus the esper system was perfect for developing your characters how you wanted to.2009-10-03 16:19:00
