Fracture Demo today

Archive: 27 posts

So who has played the demo of fracture today? what did you think?

I played it and I enjoyed the game. I had fun just lifting the ground many many times.

did anyone try to use the lifting of ground to launch your guy around I did and it is fun. the trick is the land on a area right when it is lifting and it will hit upwards and sometimes to the side and you can continue to do this until you hit a wall if you time it.

well tell me what you thought of it and if you will be buying this game.

Tried the 360 version (I have both consoles and around these parts, or should I say, the entire UK!) The xbl downloads are WAY faster, so i get all multiplatform demos on the 360.

Game seems good, not perfect, the acting is a little wooden and the storyline seems like it's going to start well and then start meandering pretty quickly, but I like the physics behind the terrain movement, I like the ways it can be used. Seems fun overall, just don't expect an epic storyline.

I'll be buying it, though whether it will be at release or not depends, I would probably doubt a release purchase due to the period of the year we're in. I'll probably pick it up used during next year's period of "Bugger all's coming out".

The demo was fun, I think it would be a crazy on-line game. I was hoping it would have on-line with the demo but yeah it is a fun game. I went to town on lowering the ground, it was fun. I thought of the Unreal terrain editor, it was a fun game. Today I will try Merc 2.2008-09-19 14:28:00

Wow. Am I actually hearing this? The game sucked; the textures were low res, the explosions were stolen from the PS1, the acting WAS AS BAD AS... well, no other game comes close to it in that department.

Yes: the game was fun... to start with, then things got worse. Anyways, perhaps I'm being too harsh, but I really didn't like it.

You know guys that demos are made before the final build. So this is most likely not how good the graphics are in the actual game, demos are made to show off the gameplay, and teh gameplay is fun. This is the reason why companies have a hard time giving out demos because of people talking about graphics, demos are not actual games. If you have madden go download the demo and than check out the game, two complete looking games, the demo did not look anything close to actual game.
Now I am not saying that it was a great game but it was fun, I liked lifting up the terrain, this is totally new something never done in game, imagine the crazness of on-ine and everyone able to use these powers. I like how powerfull the weapons were. I am not counting on this game of a super story. But what you can do is amazing, it is cool how it is done and that is what makes me happy. Imagine what other games can do with the toolset lucasarts used to make this, it is going to be amazing.
But really it is a demo, I know you can judge sometings from the demo and I would prefer them not give one than releasing a poor demo but honestly if they release a demo of actual gameplay than why not release the game.

I didn't like the shooting to be honest... It didn't feel like you were actually hurting anyone; kinda like Mercs 2. Meh, whatever. It's not my type of game.2008-09-19 17:38:00

Yeah I can understand what you mean. But I think the thing is you have to press the R2 button to hurt people, that gun was working great. But yeah if you don't like it that is cool and all. But seriously people complaining how a demo looks or how a beta does not work. Well demos are not a finished product and beta is a Test for the final product to make sure the servers are working and fix any bugs that come up for the final product.

Not perfect, but it gets points for being original and fun. Makes me wonder how the multiplayer's gonna be... Crazy, obviously! I'd get it just for that. The concept is there...it just needs polishing. :]2008-09-20 09:50:00

Honestly? It felt a little gimmicky. Like they came up with the idea of terrain deformation, then built a game around it and tried to make it work. Some of the weapons were creative, and I liked the very small puzzle element to it, but other than that, it wasn't great. The enemy AI was just bad, and I couldn't really get to grips with the combat because the ground was constantly changing.2008-09-21 23:59:00

The weapons were very fun, I found. Not sure how it'll go across a whole game, but it was great for a demo. I'll be keeping tabs on this.2008-09-22 02:37:00

This demo was actually quite fun. I love in that big area at the beginning, just mucking around. And the first grenades you get are awesome.2008-09-22 07:58:00

So yea I can think of a game that sounds EXACTLY like this one in terms of player feedback... HAZE!

Everything mentioned in the two quotes above makes me think of Haze. So this leads me to believe it will get the same harsh treatment. Terrain deformation or Nectar highs, the principal is the same, have an idea, put it in the game, the rest will *won't* follow.

To be honest though, I had TONS of fun with Haze. For one reason only though: I played for 9 hours straight, till the sun came up, with a buddy playing offline-coop. It was hilarious, the things that were bad about the game made us laugh and the things that were good were less overshadowed by the bad because we could enjoy it all together.

I might do the same thing with fracture (is there even offline coop though?) however, if I hear a single soldier say the words "Do it for Merino!" I will murder the developper! xD Anyone who's played through Haze knows exactly what I'm talking about. I actually shot my AI teammates just so I wouldn't have to hear their 2 or 3 one liners repeated over and over again anymore!!!! *And then my buddy brings him back to life* Arrrg! loll

So yea, Fracture does seem gimmicky, and that can be fun when you're laughing about it, but not in single player, so this is a coop or nothing game for me!

*ends rant* xD

I loved the demo. I think this is a must have. But that's just my opinion. You know. If you care about my opinion.2008-09-25 03:51:00

You know I agree with you on that, the game seems really built around the terrain game and not a game with a terrain deformation into it. Good points CC.

Hadn't originally thought that, but, having read it, I completely agree. I suppose that's often how things do get made, story wasn't exactly the forefront of MM when they started LBP, but I think it came together well. A little less so with fracture methinks.

But, the gameplay is okay, if a little gimmicy, and I am more than willing to try it out to see how it plays through a full game.

I want to see how this does on-line against others, I have been seeing that games focus more on-line than story and that is okay but I say leeave the story part out than if it is not worth it. Focus more on the on-line experience for the game and not the story.
Really most games are about a game element, MGS works off a story and sneaking. But a game like this was about the terrain and than they built around that, from what I saw of it so far. But it was a demo and possibly the game could be better.

I enjoyed the demo, especially making your own cover that was really cool. I doubt I'll buy it though. Maybe a rent.2008-09-25 21:07:00

I'm not really into renting, we can't really get any decent rents that last more than 2-3 days around here, then you have to rush. I do like borrowing from friends however. And that's my plan.2008-09-25 21:29:00

I downloaded the demo the other day, and played through it. I thought it was surprisingly fun. Entrencher was very useful. Guns were innovative, and felt fairly nice to shoot (comment on the main rifle: Unenjoyable. Not fast enough fire, damage was good enough, but accuracy was terrible considering the rate of fire, overall meh) and it looks to be at least a solid third-person shooter with some very interesting (even if somewhat gimmicky) mechanics. It's polished, certainly, and just moving around and running and jumping and shooting was very natural. (Exception: Sprinting. Felt constrained and too slow.) But yeah, it looks like a good contender for getting. It all depends on the reviews.

However, a note: LucasArts is rather inconsistent when it comes to games. Some are great, others not so. So it all depends on how it turns out.
