How many people finnish levels?

Archive: 21 posts

It's come to my attention that not many people get high-scores in levels.
Getting 100th place out of 10,000 plays is no surprise for me nowadays.

I understand that restarting a level doesn't increase your number of plays so it can't be the hardcore players trying to ace or get the high scores ticking up the play numbers.

Then it just must mean 3 things.

1: Not much people care for bubbles or points
2: A lot of people are noobs
3: Not much people finish a level.

I believe I'm a not a hardcore LBP player. I don't try and get every possible point bubble nor do i focus that much on not dying. I just collect bubbles that are easy to get or ones that are on the way.
Yet... i can beat 9000 people's scores..... this doesn't make sense!

All I can think of is that people are just entering the level, returning to their pod before finishing it and just asking for hearts.....

Unless I'm totally confused about how the number of plays system works.

It could also be, as happens to me alot in certain kinds of levels,

4) Given the point bubble combinations and placements, and opportunities and probabilities to die, there are only so many likely score possibilities at the end of the level, and you are tied for 100th place with many other people.

I'm pretty sure the plays on a level actually do go up when you play it again or restart it.

Yes, plays on a level do go up when you restart, hence why survival levels get so many plays.

It's just because most of the players are children with very little patience in all honesty.

Someone else may go into more detail with more in depth reasons but that's the main only really

I'll be honest. Sometimes I touch the scoreboard and then quit before the score is posted. I will generally finish a level before quitting, but sometimes I just hate waiting for the scoreboard to cycle through its process.

That may just because I am in a hurry and have very little time to play - you know speeding through as best as I can.

I prefer to swedish levels rather than finnish them.

Seriously though, once I hit the scoreboard I hit "return to popit EDIT: erhm... I mean POD". Scores are irelevant to me... it's all about the fun factor rather than points.

This is because of our Ritalin driven society that is not only slowly loosing the meaning of relaxing but also basic virtues like patience.

Reality is, most gamers are in some unexisting hurry (the hurry DO exist in their head) and the second they encounter a challenge that surpasses their spontaneous reactions (so they die or feel blocked) they automatically quit.

This is cause by the bit-sized nature of the levels in the game vs the quantity there is to play. Non-infinite checkpoints also don't help in this case here or any form of difficulty.

Its sad really because this results in millions of people not grasping the potential and genuine of this game.

lol!

Back on topic, it depends on the level of course. I play some levels over and over just to have fun, and I don't or won't even finish other levels because I'm not having fun.

All the above is true, except when I'm playing a level by CuzFeeshe (CCubbage), in which case I try to get in the top ten, but the palpitations I suffer when playing his concoctions leave me needing a trip to rehab.

Really? I return to pod.

I only return to pod when it's a really sad level, and I don't wanna be seen on the high-score board. (Such as Ruselsmussels' levels...)

Also, when looking at my friends' scores, I've seen that they can get really low scores...

Until I came here, I didn't really see the appeal of getting a high score. There are so many levels out there with millions of high score tables, that it becomes rather pointless. High scores are best when there's only a few places to get them.

But now I'm starting to enjoy going for high scores on levels by people here, because there's a bit of fun competition.

Also, when looking at my friends' scores, I've seen that they can get really low scores...

I've found the same thing. On my Clockworx survival challenge, I think one person only has about 50 points. You get 10 points for every time you bounce, so they must have died within about 5 seconds. It's kind of upsetting that they're on my friends list yet they don't even bother to try out the level properly...

A lot of the time I quit a level after I touch the scoreboard.
It's so much faster, as I dont really care for user-created items or high scores.

1... check! I enjoy the craftmenship, ingenuity and creativity of levels, points aren't my thing.
2... check! I'm pretty bad at platforming, really.
3... Some levels are pretty bad. If a level is broken, for instance I drop down into some area I'm not supposed to be, or the lift takes off without me on it and it doesn't come back, I'll most likely return to pod. Same thing if I hit a really difficult section and I run out of lives. There has to a some appeal to make me retry (see point 1).

With two million levels out there, a bunch of level ideas in my head that are nowhere near completion, and my limited free time, I can't spend the time to finish each level, sorry. But if your level is really good, I will try hard to finish it. You just have to lure me to the end.

it could be simply the fact that the majority of people on little big planet suck at playing it. So it should be easy to beat most of the people. This is evident by "most" the Highly Praised levels being a walk through and hey look at what i built and how pretty it is and really offers no challenge to the player. Once a level provides a challenge of substance it is usually knocked down to 3 stars status. this is the community that is little big planet, you will never see a five star level that provides a serious challenge.

So i sometimes quit a level before posting a score becuase most of the levels the score is meaningless. When i find a good level that is fun and challenges my skill i will post a score and replay this level many times. These levels are rare as gameplay takes a backseat to visuals in the littlebigplanet community, which is unfortunate becuase it makes it even more difficult to find a level with a good gameplay challenge.

See? you're demonstrating what I was saying? With enjoying more levels in numbers but not playing them to the end or properly? What advantages does it gives you? This is the non-existing hurry. It's like people feel they need to play ALLLLL the good levels. It's not possible so the stress should end at foetus state. If there was 100 levels available instead of 10 millions I would play at the exact same pace. What the hell does it matter that I have time or not to play X level?? As long as you play great levels everytime you play this means your experience is maximised imo.

The problem is that not all levels are great. Especially when I want to see what the competition has done with an idea I get, I search for a few keywords and try some of the levels, and a lot of the results are rubbish, sorry to say. If I then get stuck because the level is broken, why wouldn't I quit the level in stead of restarting? That way I can spend the rest of my time on better levels. Sack's in the City is still on my list, for example.

If you're getting palpitations, you KNOW its a good game!

Seriously, though - I've been thinking the same thing and was actually thinking of starting a thread like this myself.... "Are people REALLY spending time in your level?"

I currently have the high score in Wex's "Mind of a H4Hr"... not by a little, but by a long shot. That level to me was SOOO adicting and I spent a lot of time trying to perfect the bubble collection. But still.... tens of thousands of people played it. I expected SOMEONE to beat me.

Charlie, I have to slightly disagree... I only know (and EXPECT) a good game if it's made by you. Is this slighty biased? Maybe. Is it over familiar? I don't care. You're a darn nice fellow, and Andrew (SpookyBuz) just told me to say that if we were ever to meet, I could give you a big hug from me and ten from him!

NOTE: SpookyBuz is an absolute fussy beast, and he would not say your levels are "uncomparable" without just cause. He didn't have nightmares, but he has been known to say one or two words that cannot be repeated on a family-friendly site

I usually quite just before or once I'm on the scoreboard when I play on my own. Can't be bothered to sit through the little sequence and find out that I'm 1278th with 100 other people. If scoreboard showed only your friend's scores and maybe the high score I would be more inclined to actually look at it.2009-09-28 23:02:00

This ^

It's still a game and games are made for having fun, not for forcing ourselves to play if we don't want to...
I'm talking here for the bad or average community levels, and sure the huge number of available levels doesn't help

For some high quality levels that are just not my style or my taste (that happens),
I make the effort because I can learn something by playing them :
see how things are done, learn some ideas etc...
It's another kind of pleasure

Of course you can quit bad levels.
