The Perpetual Distance - (Chapter II) - The Abandoned Citadel

Right, a couple of you may know that I've started the second chapter, where I'm taking...Well...Quite a dark turn with the series (which I wanted to do with the first chapter but ran out of thermo...). It's going to be slightly grimmer than what you saw of the previous installment, and far more detailed. I can't reveal too much, but here's the plot outline...

Picking up from Chapter I, where you saw the destruction of the Inn and the invasion of the local residence, you have to evacuate the area. You destroyed one of the Lizeth machines (using the artefact [or for you Americans, artifact]), but you fear there may be more of these death contraptions.

You were right.

You have no memory of what happened, you can only suspect that another one of these machines took out your boat...Maybe even killed your friends. You wake up inside a strange town, completely deserted, seemingly enchanted, beautiful, only until you observe the bullet holes and the blood of those who lived in the area. What is this place? Where are the folk? More importantly, where's the next artefact...?

I need to work on platforming most of all, I have a few ideas but I just need to...well, incorporate them in some way. Sadly, I'm battling with the thermo at the moment...

Also what I planned on doing...-__-' Kinda meant to be a surprise but meh. I'm actually working on III as well. Not as much as II but I also figured, seeing as though the water may not come out for a while, I could work on III at the same time. Besides, knowing me I would take around four months to make a level. Seriously, that's how long DMCIV took.

I share your enthusiasm for seeing the continuation of great series as soon as possible.

By the way ... Ghost of Sparta Chapter Two?

However, just for the record - I'm not actually for publishing part of a series with the knowledge you'll edit in a completely new element later.

If I care about story, I think it's to be assumed I also care about continuity, at least to a reasonable degree.

unless i'm mistaken, that would be somewhat wierd... skipping an entire chapter of the story, you see

But if he's just waiting on water, he could work on ones after it in the meantime, meaning you'd get chapter 3 a bit faster.

Considering I make everything up on the spot, that seems like a good idea. However, I've put so much into this that, well, killing it off now for a while will completely drain my motivation.

I've tried the brain glitch, hence the "fake water". It fails.

So I may include waterfalls, but at the same time, I may not be able to due to layers -__-' Don't worry, I'll get around it...

so you aren't going to use the layer glitch on this? cuz there is a supposed way to make it so objects themselves can bypass the layers too...just look for one of the hundreds of glitch showcase levels and hop to it

Yep there is a way to do that and for those that didn't know yet, pistons do work in the glitched layers, bolts on the other hand do not.

So it would be perfectly possible to create layerglitched waterfalls.
If you need help with something just gimme a call when you are in LBP, don't think you need it but you never know.

I really appreciate it and I will keep it in mind, however, the only help I need right now, and I do believe this is the most helpful thing anyone could ever do atm, is just take a peek and see if the ****ing thing works. Of course, I cannot force, but I will need to call you very soon Zwollyy


As for the level, I've got around my fake water dilemmas, and on top of that, I've completely changed the lighting and atmosphere...Hopefully for the better...

boxes? lol not really...that's only for those who can't be patient and wanted to complete the game...I've never used the box...unless taking funny pix

I love everything I've seen so far, imo take your time as the result will be most pleasing when you think it through.
Be careful though, as it also raises expectations!!

Do you have a full story in your mind for this one or do just kinda make it up as you go along?

As for the story, I know exactly what it is about and the various connotations, but the way I present it and lay it out I make up right there and then. Most of the time I end up with sections which really don't fit in with the rest of the level, or its theme.

Yes, that is correct.

I already know what the story is and what happens...It's just the level design/theme I make up on the spot.

okay see that's a pretty good idea...

and since i have dbz on the mind any chance you are going to make one of those "has nothing to do with the story but i put it there anyways to show these people have a life" type levels like how some dbz levels dont have anything to do with the series but they show that they have a life and do stuff and etc.

You were saying there wasnt enough platforming and I couldn't give you a proper answer because typing in littlebigplanet is sooooooo slow.. I don't really see the problem, your levels have there own style and it doesn't have to be an obstacle course. If you'd put in more platforming people wouldn't notice the brilliant design of your level, the second time I tested it I saw alot of things in the background that I didn't even notice before. You do have some parts where you have to walk for a bit (maybe you mean there has to be platforming in these parts?), why not put some score bubbles in the air in groups of 3, that way people have will jump instead of walk in a straight line.

Sorry to hear that you lost a part of your level, i've had the problem alot too : Im sure you can do it again, Keep up the work and thanks for helping me with my levels

Well hopefully I will be able to balance the visual-gameplay levels with an extra section I just made...

...I was gonna use it to remake my Devil May Cry levels, but I figured that it would look better in Perpetual. It's the best looking thing I have ever made, so I just cannot wait to let you guys see it...

Nein, I was talking specifically about that DMC-themed section Sorry to disappoint

PROGRESS UPDATE: The level stands at 85%...ish. I've just completely redone the stealth area so that...Well, there isn't any stealth involved. However, it is one section which hopefully balances that platforming-visuals scale. I just hope to god that it works properly when others test it...Which should be soon...

The level should have at least one piece of platforming in it. At least a small rock I have to jump over, for example. Other than that - by all means, tell your story. I'm not here for the chance to jump over two rocks.

I'll be honest, and I think I might be somewhat representative of your demographic here ... I'm here for the story, and for the atmosphere. Some kind of gameplay is important, yes ... but really just to legitimize it - so we can feel like "we're playing a game we're involved with". If it's minimal, so be it. Did you ever play - or watch someone play - Metal Gear Solid 4?

Giant movie with occasional interaction by the player for 4 minutes. Also, it was great.

Sadly, you won't get one. I want to plan one, but it won't fit here. It's just a simple gassing or a quick plasma ball. Nothing spectacular.

Wowzers.I'm not entirely sure what you mean, but if you're talking about how much I will be able to add with two bars, let's just say (apart from characters and touching up the final area) no, there is nothing else I will be able to add. Trust me, this level is almost entirely focused on visuals (and story...Which really doesn't take up any thermo), and I feel I've gone a step too far with my 'experiments'...

That being said, I wouldn't go too overboard actually telling everyone directly what your story is about, at least before they play it.

Let people appreciate the story for what it is, and then afterwards, if you really want to, you can dissect it for them. Allow people to draw their own philosophical inferences first.

Nope, theres no way to put it off. But if you are creating, and not using online, etc. You can log off the PSN network in game, then log back in and NOT log in to LBP online. you'll still be able to talk with PSN friends and create, but no messages 2009-11-04 17:45:00
