Custom Material

Archive: 16 posts

Okay, here is my idea(wow, 4 suggestions in one day, that must be a record!). Have you ever wanted to make an object, for example, is light, but cannot be grabbed or blown up? If so, than you'll like this!

My idea, is an empty material slot, with no picture. When you place it, a "Tweak" menu pops up. You can change the properties of it there, such as the weight, whether or not it can be blown up, if it can be grabbed, etc. But, you can also choose the design. You go into the Stickers page, and you can select ANY sticker/photo you want to be the design! But, you're probably wondering, "Can't we just place the sticker on a material?" Well, you can, but it can also be removed with the Sticker mover-thingy. With this, however, You can't!

Well, whaddyathink?

Every material has its own "Created By" page... so it seems MM had something like this in mind from the begining.

And there's been several times when I've really, really wanted the option too.

I've just spent ages working on an object, and then found that I need it to be indestructible (or the opposite). But by changing the material, I completely break the mechanism, because it's suddenly becomes 10x heavier or lighter.

However... I can see why MM might not want to add customisable materials. Part of the appeal of LBP is that objects and materials behave as they do in the real world. Stone is heavy, sponge is light. Balloons float away. It's very intuitive.

If they give players the power to change that, we're going to get loads of horrible levels where nothing behaves how you'd expect.
"Crushed by a comedy sponge-stone again, oh joy."

Well, I think it the idea is good, but I agree with Tig-W, too.

If people makes it look like sponge, but in reality it weights like metal, it would only be frustrating.

I say you couldn't put stickers on it, instead the material changes shape after the atttributes it's got.

I'd rather have a semi-material customizer. It could work like this.

You pick a base material. It will have all that material's traits, and shape. (You know, like how brown rusty metal has a small outline around it, and floaty has bumps all over it.)

You then select a texture. It can be any sticker. You could move and zoom the sticker, (Like when you set an iPhone's wallpaper.) and it would automatically tile all over the material.

The texture wouldn't be removable with the Sticker removal tool, and would colour the whole material, including the border, (If there is one.) and other details.

Just a little bit of feedback.

that sounds like a very neat idea.

Although... would it be much of an improvement over placing very large stickers on things?

To be honest, I think a basic "desctructible/indestructible" option would satisfy 90% of my custom-material desires....

even if they dont do this customisable material, they really need a indestructable grabbable material, if you go on LilKLash16s long way 2, and stand the bomb up on its side you can completely break the grab mechanism2009-10-03 18:07:00

The simplest would be what I suggested loooooong ago:

A tweak menu on materials, per object.

When you press square (tweak) on the material you would get the following menu:

- Change texture (when you click, the window with the different materials appear and you chose your appearance)

- Hue change (slider)

- Saturation + - (slider)

- Opacity + - (numeral)

- Weight + - (numeral)

- Slippery + - (slider) (per example, full slippery would be like glass)

- Grabable (yes/no)

.

Guys, but if you can create your own materials, you wouldn't really need all of the pre-made ones, and there would be no point to finish the entire story and get them all.

I agree that this is a good idea, but it would cause a big cause in the game.

OF COURSE this is the reason why this option of mine isn't in the game. Because otherwise it's easy for MM to do it. It's because they don't want to render their story mode levels less interesting and cannibalise some DLC opportunities.

But in my humble opinion they are wrong. This would make more DLC sales. Simply because this move would open the creativity so much, the newcomers and augmented number of people creating, attracted will contribute into selling new DLC. This is a community based game. It's the health of their community that makes them money. This means it's the community you need to feed first and open up creativity because it's the main fuel point for the game. Media Molecule is missing alot of opportunity, I think they are a bit shy with the game and not taking enough risks.

EDIT: Also, it's not true anyways that it would go against materials DLC and the story mode's attraction. You collect ALOT of things in the story mode and you'd still need to collect the appearance of the materials or buy them in DLC.

i dont see how it would be a hassle. i think that at the least you should have an indestrucability setting on things, this would really help during levels that include bombs IE: the Bunker, which has a poly bit on it, that would look really good if you could tweak the stone to be destrucable2009-10-25 11:26:00

I agree to the indestructability (jeez, that must be the longest word ever) thing.
