Playing your own Created level...

Archive: 15 posts

Is it normal to not be entirely entertained by your own level after spending some 20 hours creating it? I have been working on my current level for some time now and when I run through to play it and make sure all the mechanics work I just don't think its fun anymore. Is this normal or is my level just no longer fun?2009-09-24 17:51:00

It's normal, go play another level ALOT and you'll get the same result.2009-09-24 17:57:00

I know exactly how you feel.

Maybe take some breaks from working on it?

Ask people to test it for you, for feedback, unless its published.

if its any consolation, I got bored of my levels long ago

I just wanted to be sure it was normal. I do plan to invite people here to play it first and give me some feedback before I publish it. I am a perfectionist by nature so its difficult to say that I am done with the level yet.2009-09-24 18:05:00

You will get bored playing it through so many times. Once I play a section, I move the start gate along a bit so I don't have to replay over and over again. Then you can move it back to the start everynow and again to make sure it flows OK.2009-09-24 18:21:00

That's probably why I had such a hard time with Destiny and Vertigo - both required playing from the very beginning to test ANYTHING since the levels didn't function part way through.

Hey I didn't realised that while playing your level. You must have suffered.

Wow, you had to test every little thing in the last sectoion CCubbage and then if it wasn't right tweak and replay the whole thing?. That must have taken some effort.

I did'nt want to upset the intro to Mars 2, so had to leave the start gate where it was, after 4 weeks I was so tired of that intro I started to hate it.

Yup - imagine in Vertigo! adding a single asteroid and then playing the entire level again, but having to fly around avoiding everything without firing so I could see if adding the asteroid caused any collisions with other objects.

Even if the level was started 10 seconds into it, the timing of everything would be thrown off and totally change the placement of all the objects as they floated on-screen.

Certain TYPES of levels I never want to do again. I'm glad I did it, though. It's unique.

Yes, it's true that familiarity can sometimes breed contempt.

I like to think I test, but like anything else, you sometimes get too close and miss glaringly obvious things.

With the first Hyper Cube, I tried so hard to make it nigh on impossible to get 'trapped'. I concentrated so hard on this aspect, that the first time I published it, I forgot to put the hyper cubes in any of the rooms! Duh!

I know what you mean, you start to think "This is so dull, nobody will like it". I generally do as Grant said and move the checkpoint along but when that's not an option I start playing with my eyes closed to entertain myself.2009-09-30 16:48:00

Not fun? Why repetition is great! I like to see things work over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and--

Have I gone too far?
