xkappax's comics, artwork and weird stuff she does thread

Archive: 10 posts

Hello everyone.
I saw Morgana25's thread about what she did/does outside of lbp, and I thought I'd follow with a thread of my own. I don't exactly have very much self esteem, but I love art and creativity, and doing it makes me very, very happy.

For the people who know me, you may or may not know that I get quite distracted by creative diversions. I am a comic book artist above all, so I guess I'll start with that.

The Comics
I've been writing my comic series, Wish Fulfillment, since I was in about 7th grade, and began putting it online about a year ago. It's been pretty hard juggling my art and level creations, but I've managed to get a comic out every single month regardless. ^_^ They can be found here for anyone who is interested:

Every once in a while I get bitten by a different creative bug, and so here are the other things I've done, too.

Animations
I took animation in college, and I did claymations, pencil test animations, action figure stop motion, and many many other kinds... and I got a copy of flash in 2001 when I started working as a graphic designer. Shortly after, I started kappacino creations and began to do animations featuring my characters Fox Kitsune, Atom Kappa, and many others. Some of you have probably seen the LittleBigPlanet animation that I did (if not, the link is in my signature) but I have done many, many more video game themed animations at www.kappacino.com (http://www.kappacino.com). The Sword that Cuts Things animations were the most fun we ever had! ^_^

Perler Sprites
I am a huge video game nerd. HUGE. I'm old, so I'm especially a sucker for Atari, Super Nintendo and Nintendo games! A few years ago when I was short on ideas for Christmas presents, I bought some beads and did these:

Puppets
This is sort of a weird one, but back in July, I decided I was going to buy a sewing machine and learn how to sew. I came across a puppet pattern, and realized that it looked EXACTLY like a fraggle from Fraggle Rock. It was then that I made these:
Fraggles (http://s3.photobucket.com/albums/y84/haleybrooks/Fraggle/)

Mind you, some of the puppets aren't finished. I am having a very hard time with Wembley so I've only got a test head done. And the Red Fraggle is the one I'm working on right now. She's only got one eyeball at the moment because I did something stupid and broke the other one and had to reglue it.

Singing and Guitar
I don't know if I'm going to post any of my songs that I've recorded or not, because that is an area where I am EXTREMELY self-conscious. I love to sing, but stopped doing it after a friend of mine told me I had an awful voice and should not even try. I have since overcome that and I have sang at coffee houses and the like, and I even recorded a song for one of our animations, but I still get very wary about posting that sort of thing.

Photography
I posted this stuff in Kratos' photography thread as well, but I love love love love love photography. I have a crappy Sony Cybershot camera that's been dropped more times than I can count, but it's easily portable. I dream of one day getting myself a better camera, but they're expensive. Anyway, here are some photos:

I've done many, many other things, including LBP level design (obviously) and even a failed RPG that we started to make (long story). I tend to have attention deficit disorder when it comes to my creative endeavors, so instead of channeling the creativity into one then, I tend to just explode and go off in many directions. I'm sure that's not a good thing, but I can honestly say I've tried a whole lot of things. ^_^

I hope you guys have enjoyed this glimpse into my creative insanity. I know I love looking at how creative everyone else on the forum is! ^_^

OK - I generally skip through creations pretty quickly, having been innundated (did I spell that right?) with ads, campaigns and visuals all day long.

Sooo, I had a quick look at the Wish Fulfillment link and......

OMG.....

*checks back to forum page to make sure I got the right link*

*Mouth hangs open*

How...

What the...

I'm absolutely stunned....

After looking through the third part (which was very entertaining - love the self-mocking humour), yes all of it, I then looked through the page source coding (how sad is that?) and marvel at the page design...

I then go on to see your photos, which I thought were very slick - I love nature photography - especially macro work.

But most of all, I wanted to post because few people have a god-given talent to create anime with such little effort. By that, I don't mean you didn't spend time on them - it's just that to create one page like this would have taken me far too long... I just cannot do cartoon work.....at all!

I admire cartoonists and still buy some (cartoons, not cartoonists) just to admire the work - I have a liking for Top Cow stuff ATM.

Splendid

Magnificent

Bravo

You should be very proud - thank you for sharing it with us.

I'm also a fan of anyone who remebers Atari! I had access to a Radioshack TRS80, on which I did my first pixel-art (sorry, block-art by definition due to the pixel size of a small house). I then moved on to C64 and then to really cool stuff on the Amiga.

I too tend to deviate wildly with artistic trends doing pencil one minute, digital the next - or animation...or 3D (liking this a lot recently) or even webdesign..

*goes back to look at more comic art*

Thank you so much for the kind words. All of you.

As far as Wish Fulfillment goes, I've been doing that for a long time, and I've been doing anime/manga style for a long time. I used to watch ranma 1/2 and urusei yatsura and study it. I would watch episodes over and over again to make sure I got the shading right. My style is very much like Rumiko Takahashi's, because that is what I was exposed to growing up, but it's not starting to meld with different styles now that I've broadened my horizons and now that so much more anime/manga is readily available (when I was a kid, it was harder to find) I'm also quite influenced by Dr. Slump, mostly for the goofy facial expressions Akira Toryama pulls off.

Concerning the photos: That ice storm was a photographer's dream. I shot those with a better camera, I borrowed it from the vice president of our company. Here I was, sliding around the parking lot and trying to snap shots of these ice formations. Knowing my obsession of crystals, when a whole forest looks like it's made out of crystal, you just gotta go and take pictures of it! I've never in my entire life seen ice that thick on trees!

I love macro photography. I hope to some day have a really good camera so I can take crazy shots of spiders and bugs close up! Dragonflies seem to like to pose for me, so I really want to get good shots of those, too.

Oh, and Rhyfelwr, I didn't code the Wish Fulfillment page. My friend Tony did that for me. He's very talented with that sort of thing. I did the layout in indesign, broke it up into pngs for him, and he did the rest. I do not excel at html, rails, web design, etc.

I flit from thing to thing so quickly, and sometimes I think it's a really bad thing. I'll be animating one day and then just stop and say "now I feel like making something out of clay!" and then I'll do that. The next day I might feel like silk screening tee shirts. I never know what I'm going to wake up and feel like doing. I used to suppress it and try to just focus on one thing, but then it felt like work. Usually, I just let myself do what I want to artistically. ^_^

Again, thank you guys for the kind words!
