Look at the size of that!

I was wondering how people make their levels so big. I mean really, really big. My thermo is over halfway and no matter what I do, I just can't seem to make it go down. I've tried everything and I'm making a really long level and I'm only at the STAAAAARRTT! The thermo never goes down.

Oh, and what does it take to make aa good level. Cos I'm stumped.

What makes a good level isn't easily definable, i've played a lot of good levels, and they're all good for different reasons.

As to the thermo, i wouldn't start worrying until you really get near the end there. The level i'm working on has only a few bars left, but when i add things it doesn't go up all that much as i'm adjusting different thermos than the main one (curse you complex objects!)

Its quite possible your thermo will slow down for a while, until another thermo overlaps it.

The thermometer tends to shoot up right away as you add new materials and objects... a couple things that make it shoot up faster:

- Having lots of things close together

- Having shapes with lots of corners or that take up a very large volume

- Having large, complicated contraptions.

- Using many different materials.

etc.

Anyway like I said, the thermometer shoots up a lot when you start adding new materials, prefab objects and even stickers. But you'll find that as you use the ones you added, it will barely move.

If you can give us a bit more information into the level, we might be able to help a little more.

Make sure you are'nt using complex shapes with to many vertices.
Make sure your emitters are'nt firing the whole time, they only need to emit when you can see them.
Glue or DM loose objects, the game has to work the physics engine on anything not fastened down.

It becomes easier with time, make a copy of the level and experiment is all I can suggest really. I once dropped the thermo nearly a full quarter by using the corner editor (my rocks were WAY to complicated).

Is it just me, or are there a ton of these threads popping up lately? Can anyone provide a link to a comprehensive Thermo management guide? If not, would anyone like to collaborate on one? That way, we can just link them to said thread, and wipe our hands of the whole issue.2009-09-22 18:10:00

That's a good idea. Who's going to do that?

I typically send people here:

but i'm willing to help formulate a new guide. This is currently a spotlighted tutorial... which it seems noone ever looks at when they ask a question about level building

I tihnk that guide really needs replacing. It's really just a series of anecdotal statements regarding the thermo, which mostly aren't inaccurate, but certainly there is a lot missing. I don't mean to be rude to the writer as obviously it was written a long time ago and we've learned a lot since then.

Is this me volunteering? Meh. I dunno. If someone gets it started I'm sure I'll be along to poke holes in whatever they write

Hey we need someone to do that too ;p

And i agree, it is a bit old, but it does answer a fair amount too if i'm not mistaken.

I only skimmed through, but it has a mixture of good advice, advice that's only good under certain circumstances (due to it being anecdotal) and big gaps. There doesn't even seem to be mention of separate thermos - which realistically is lesson 1, IMO.2009-09-22 22:47:00

Well, rather than starting a research paper that's due on Thursday, I think I'm going to start working on something like this. Expect questions, rtm, since you are the resident guru. I'm always looking for someone to correct me when I've overstepped some assumptions.2009-09-22 22:52:00
