It's about time LBP becomes integrated into our educational system!

... Odd.

I unno... we've got a bunch of laptops and wikispaces at our school... doesn't seem to help at all, and just detracts from anything meaningful :/

I think it might be true if it were not for the little tediums that accompany creating in LBP. For example, there's not much educational merit to making it look pretty.

If there were challenges, sort of the like the contraption challenges that are floating around, then it would be a bit better.

On a side note, The Epic of Gilgamesh was a great story.

Making the level look pretty requires artistic skills and creativity doesn't it?

But those aren't guidelines in state education requirements.

Yeah, I understand that it doesn't have much educational merit. You do learn something from it though right?2009-09-20 21:06:00

Anybody who has ever played Little Big Planet knows that it not only inspires creativity but challenges aptitude and problem solving skills at any age.

Exactly! I'd love to be told to play LBP in school.

I agree with the lack of educational value to some aspects of LBP, but I feel we are ignoring the main issue the article deals with--motivation and active, rather than passive, learning: a niche for innovative games and technology like LBP. Think not of how we play LBP currently, but its potential. For instance, one can play or create levels with historical accuracy, or perhaps a lesson in physics.

Learning is a process, and sometimes successful education lies in the presentation of materials. I would bet that students would more likely remember Ada Lovelace a la Sackperson than an abstract figure in a textbook, and her accomplishments would be well illustrated through an LBP level.

We are also forgetting to take into account LBP gameplay. Learning teamwork has often failed for me, and I feel one can benefit in multiplayer levels that demand the input from everyone. I remember this feature as one of the most fulfilling aspects of the game.

While I totally agree that misuse of technology in school is a possibility, I feel that with the right dosage and teacher-guidance, games like LBP can make learning efficient and enjoyable. I cannot see this program working higher than elementary level, and money might be better spent on expensive, yet worthwhile programs like the arts. But should Sony and Mm fund such a curriculum, then LBP can certainly make us all smarter...

Well the education system sucks, it's nice to see some people finally taking risks to make it better.

Video games though? Seriously?

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's not just LBP, you can learn from ANYTHING in this world. Just looking at ants all day long will get you understanding something about them.

Who said education had to be all about Maths, Language and Science!? I can try and find 10 ways to do a hand stand and call it education for all i care!

@dex: Video games are a fantastic vehicle for teaching and learning. Interactive systems and simulations are used extensively in the military and for training surgeons and a large amount of academic research indicates massive benefits to the quality of learning achieved through these means. Yes it has to be done right, but with LBP being a highly customisable system, you can do whatever you want with it. And the point really is transferrable skills, as mentioned by other above, teamwork and communication could be very well taught through this medium.

@snowyjoe: You forget that maths, language and science (effectively the cornerstones of education), bring with them a huge amount of transferrables. It's not just the facts that you learn, it's the skills you have to develop within those. Looking at ants will teach you about ants. Your science lessons will teach you about science, but also about deduction, reasoning, problem solving, communication, testimg, critical thinking (we really need more of that in our world) ect. ect. ect. That's why they are core and why they are important in education. Not because of the actual facts you learn, but because of the skills that come with. Also, I wouldn't put "ability to do handstands" and "can watch ants for hours" on your CV if I were you

Yeah... but the problem is that they don't teach you how to transfer them very well.
Saying something like "this beaker is reinforced glass so don't put hot water in your normal water glass!" would of been helpful back in my cooking days....

Anyway, enough about my poor attempt at school or cooking......... back on topic.

LBP helps people find solutions in an environment with limited resources. I think LBP allows people to analyze his/her environment and come up with solutions accordingly. Like someone said before in this thread, problem solving!

(It also helped me realize the importance of knowing your audience and what they like. You can make anything that pleases you, but to make something that pleases a number of other people is a totally different story)
