The Thermometer: Sackboy's Worst Enemy

Archive: 19 posts

Well, I was building a new level and I had only done a small amount, and I looked over to the thermometer and it was already HALFWAY UP! I had got so much more planned for this level, and I didn't want to have to split the level up. I've seen such complex levels and I just wanted to see if there were any handy tricks or tips to beat the demon thermometer!

Pleez halp!

Try to reduce the number of edges in your level. This is the number one violator for most people. Are you shaping things by cutting out edges with other shapes? If so, you may want to consider using the corner editor tool for your detail shaping.2009-09-20 19:00:00

You may also want to limit the amount of materials you use. More materials mean more themo!2009-09-20 19:10:00

Complicated objects are most likely the killer here. As comphermc said, try using the corner editing tool to shape things more often and glue objects together rather than embedding them into each other.

I've discovered from my campaign to change the name of the "3D Layer Glitch" that it's useless trying to change the minds of the masses. Best to just give up early.

Well, to help you lower your thermometer, we need to figure out exactly which thermometer is at it's highest. What is in your level? When you add a new material, does the thermometer go up, because despite rtm223 freaking out, it could actually be that for the time being. Do you have many different objects in a small space? Do you have an emitter with a maximum of 99 emitted? Does deleting certain objects lower the thermometer drastically? Answering these questions will help us to diagnose your problem, and help you become better at optimizing your thermometer. 2009-09-20 19:50:00

What, you mean the Extra Layers glitch?

Hey, don't panic. Your thermo is just fine. The thermo bar you can see represents only the fullest of many themo bars, each of which deal with different stuff. It's likely to be one particular thermo that's made it go up so fast, such as logic tools, quantity of different shapes, compexity of shapes, stickers and materials. It's quite normal for the materials thermo to shoot up very quickly when you start a new level, so it's probably that one. However, now you've used those materials once you can use them again and again without any further increase.

See, I recently built a huge level section that used a third of the collective thermo bar. I then captured the whole section, and planted this "clone" into the empty space next to the original. Want to know how much my thermo went up by? Absolutely nothing at all.

Basically, chill. It's normal for thermo to skyrocket in the early stages of creation, but it will slow right down eventually and you'll be pleasantly surprised at how much you can actually continue to build without the thermo even flickering at you.

Yes a BSprague says it is possible that your 50% thermo is materials thermo. Easy way to test this is too add a square of a new material (something you haven't used before). If the thermo jumps up a notch then you are currently using materials thermo the most.

Good news is, if this is the case then you really don't need to worry about it - you can add nearly all the materials in the game before that particular thermo maxes out - hence my annoyance at the "less materials uses less thermo" - you can use as many as you want without impacting the total amount of stuff you can get in your level.

More than materials affect the thermometer, things like connections, speakers, checkpoint gates, switches, and gameplay items (Race Gates, Jet Pack) take data when used in a variety, not quantity.

Materials you may want to look out for are materials that you can see through, such as the chain link fence material. Most basic materials take the least amount.

Complicated shapes don't take thermo unless you use to many, the thermo won't rise slowly when using complicated shapes, it should just jump a quarter or so when there are to many, same goes with connections, actually this applies to a lot of things.

That's not really how the thermometer works. I know it's been mentioned a thousand times, but I'll reiterate it once more for emphasis. The thermometer that you see on the left side of the screen in Create Mode is actually just a display of the highest of several different thermometers. Check the back of the LittleBigPlanet case, one of the pictures shows how the thermometer was set up prior to it's current system. Adding huge drastic changes to a level might not make the thermometer go up at all, it all depends on which thermometer is the highest. For example, if I put in 10 different materials, and then start doing something else, the thermometer isn't going to increase at all until a different thermometer overtakes the materials thermometer. When the level overheats, the message it gives you is telling you which thermometer it is that is full. Complex shapes, emitters, materials, collected objects, etc all have their own separate thermometer.

I know there's separate thermos, I'm saying that a variety of things will cause it to rise.

I didn't know that it wouldn't rise until another hidden thermometer overtook it though, thanks!

If objects/decorations is the thermo you're maxing on - find a way to reuse the same object in a different way within the same level.

Using that "mannequin head" sack from the monster pack, for example? Sticker it with a bronze-color sticker, shrink it down incredibly small, copy it 9 times, and use them to build a pyramid shape.

There, now you have a pretty decent looking stack of gold bricks. See how many different things you can make out of the same thing.

What was the problem in your level? I've mentioned this a couple times, but if you solve a problem, its good to post how you did it in case someone else is having a similar issue.
