would it be possible to put a dismiss all button in the new updates area. i just notice if you havent logged in for a while there can be like 5 of them and you have to refresh page 5 times to remove all of them even though you just need to look at it once to read all of them2009-09-19 20:22:00

I agree, this morning I had like 6 or 7 new updates, I'd like to be able to kill them all with one stone.2009-09-19 20:26:00

Sorry for the tedium, but if we did it any other way, it would be much too easy to ignore the content in the update. When we upgrade our version of vB, you'll be able to dismiss notices without a page reload, but that's as easy as it's going to get.2009-09-19 20:30:00

Whenever vB v4.0x is released. Probably spring/summer next year.

I didn't even notice that the page refreshes after you press the dismiss button, it does it really fast (for me at least).2009-09-19 20:46:00

Same here, I've never actually thought about it. I just hit "Dismiss" after reading and I'm on my merry way.

I was going to create a new topic for this, for once the 'similar topics' feature proved useful.

I would like to plead for a 'dismiss all' button, too. I come here pretty seldom, and there's always a gazillion pointless notices up for me when I log in. Even if I would read all the announcements, I would still like to press 'dismiss all' instead of loading the page again and again and again to get rid of all the notes.

I feel it's cheap, low, annoying and of poor planning not to have such a button. It doesn't cater to the needs of users at all. Actually, forcing users to jump through hoops like this takes a whole lot of credibility from any site. With ads and such I can understand it since they generate the money needed to run a site, but on things like the site's own news article, forcing us to get rid of them with such a tedious system is unacceptable. Sorry.

A "dismiss all" button would be extremely counter-intuitive to the point of those new updates. We want them seen, that's why they're there. I don't think we'd ever let people dismiss every single one, because we use that system to make sure that information is conveyed to as many users as possible. A feature like that would make the New Updates system a lot less useful.

What I can promise, however, is that I will try harder to make sure there aren't as many notices up as there were for the last few days. There were unnecessary notices that I had just forgotten to remove, and I can see how that would be annoying to get rid of for people that don't visit the site often. Sorry about that.

Oh okay, they get removed automatically after a certain period of time. That's reasonable. Thanks.

EDIT:
I got to admit though that I find you're approach a bit strange. If a user won't read them when they're posted, then they won't read them. I seriously don't believe making the user click 6 times makes them read them any more than they would if clicking once got rid of them. It doesn't affect me, at least.

Unless they hit it by accident... :/

I'm not sure what the problem is, really. While I agree it's a minor annoyance, clicking 'Dismiss' 6 times will take you all of 10 seconds...

...Make a game out of it - see how quickly you can manually dismiss all of them!

comphermc, an annoyance is an annoyance, regardless of scope. I reserve my right to be annoyed. 2009-12-14 16:39:00

To be honest I agree with this. The same kind of person that would click 'dismiss all' without reading them would just as well ignore them anyways. It's, form my point of view, a lose-lose situation, but that's just my two cents... you ARE the boss. It wouldn't be so annoying but my internet acts up a lot and sometimes reload takes minutes.

I want to thank you in any case for taking the time to remove the unnecessary ones. It certainly takes a load off considering the problem.

Well yes, but on the flipside of that argument, someone who doesn't want to read the New Updates will go out of their way to click "dismiss" two or three times instead of reading them. Why should we make it easier for our members to ignore information we consider important?

Let me put it this way. The people who read the news you consider important and take heed to them are going to read them even if a 'dismiss all' button exists. Also, even the people who read the news articles benefit from a dismiss all button, since when they're done reading them (if they read them all at once as I would), they want to dismiss them all with one click of a button. The people who won't read them will feel satisfied that at least they can dismiss the news easily and remain more loyal users and are less disgruntled and recommend the site to more users than they would otherwise.

Basically, the site would feel more user friendly which is always a good thing. User friendliness should be priority number one. Always.

Okay, I think this is the last time I try to convince you to do it. Sorry for being so persistent.
