Stiff Pistons....don't go against gravity?
Archive: 5 posts
So i was trying to make a 4 way switch.... and when I connect a piston to another object that was connected to a piston... suddenly the laws of gravity come in. I have a cardboard object connected to dark matter object with a stiff pistion. I then connect a another cardboard object (same size) to the first cardboard object. Then the cardboard object 2 just starts falling down.... even though the piston is stiff! .................piston........................... .piston [Dark ]---------[Cardboard Object1]--------[Cardboard Object2] [Matter] I think it's because the 1st cardboard object isn't strong enough to hold up the 2nd cardboard object. Is this normal? I swear when you make a piston stiff the laws of gravity don't count anymore.... | 2009-09-18 13:32:00 Author: snowyjoe Posts: 509 |
It has nothing to do with the stiffness of your piston bear in mind the effective strength of a connector is a bizzare mixture of: strength setting (well duh) Length Timing Relative weight of the objects at either end of the connector So stronger -> more Shorter -> more Lower time -> more Light object on the moving end - > more Heavy object stationary end -> more Once you get pistons linked in series then you hit a real world of pain due to point #4, as the ratio becomes smaller. See point 4 in that list. The effective strength of the piston is greatly reduced by the object that it is attached to. Ah! got it thanks! | 2009-09-18 13:49:00 Author: snowyjoe Posts: 509 |
Based on this, since it still uses physics, I would put a support of dark matter underneath to hold it. I've had things break over time by directly having horizontal pistons holding other materials unsupported. | 2009-09-18 13:56:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
The real problem comes in when it's a vehicle / moving object you're making, then you can't rely on the infinite strength of dark matter. | 2009-09-18 21:46:00 Author: croissantbuncake Posts: 572 |
