CometChat - Anyone interested?

Archive: 70 posts

So you guys have been clamoring for a chat feature for a long, long time now, and I haven't been able to oblige due to how difficult it would be to manage. However, I've come across (well, aer0blue initially pointed it out to me, actually) a solution that would be perfect, and would probably foster a lot more "community": CometChat. CometChat is a fantastic, feature-packed site-based chat. It works very much like Facebook Chat does - there's a bar at the bottom of the browser that follows as you scroll. It contains your buddy list (yes, your vBulletin buddy list - not a separate one), any open chat windows (you can have as many as you want), and useful navigation buttons. All of this is customizable based on whether or not a user is logged in or viewing a certain forum, so it's entirely possible for us to add a "New Thread" button when viewing a forum or even a "Search This Forum" button that would allow you to jump right to the search page without having to scroll up and find the button on the page. For more information on the featureset, head here (http://www.cometchat.com/features).

Anyway, here's where we hit a snag: it's $49.00 per site for a lifetime license. We currently don't have the funds to finance it (we've been spending it on prizes for upcoming contests - be patient and you'll soon find out!), so if you guys want it, I need help paying for it. Donating is the way to go, and you'll get some nifty features for doing so. If you think you can wait, we can slowly save up the cash and buy it, but that means it won't arrive as quickly (maybe months, depending on how the cash situation pans out). Now, to be clear, I intend on purchasing two licenses: one for LBPCentral and one for MNRCentral. If you decide to donate but you only want your money to go toward one site or the other, PM me and say so. I will make sure that I spend your donation as you intend it to be spent.

Finally, if you're totally disinterested in this feature, let me know! There's no point in spending so much on it if you guys don't want it.

Well, I just donated to the site, and it seems everyone else is being pretty cheap about it.

I'm not very familiar with how useful it'll be compared to now (and I don't want people IM spamming all over the place *glances at younger members*), but if there's site-wide demand, I may pitch in like 5 or 10 extra bucks.

This if $50 total, correct? edit: 100 total, for both sites. Got it.

If you have a preference, yes. After donating, just PM me with something like "Please use my donation for LBPCentral only - here's the email I used to donate" and I'll make sure that happens. However, if you don't have a preference, that's great too - it benefits both sites instead of just LBPCentral. As I said, it's up you to.

Well, remember, only those on your vBulletin Buddy List can IM you, so you ultimately control who can send you an IM.

It would be a great improvement to the site! I hope you will have the necessary money
However, i think the 50$ are far more justified for a forum that have more than 5000 active memebrs (LBPc) than a forum that have only 100 members (MNRc). Can't you add it first for LBPc and wait to add it to MNRC?

I almost have to agree with Takelow, LBPC seems to be in more need of it, seeing as how Mod Nation Racers isn't even out yet, while LBP has already reached over 1,000,000 levels...

If I had the funds, like everyone else here, I would donate, but I've been busy with my money lately, very sorry.

I hope to see this in the future!

That's a good question. The short answer is "Yes, but no." The long answer goes something like this:

LBPCentral and MNRCentral are run by the same staff, as you guys know. While it makes sense to add it here and wait for it to be added at MNRCentral, I want consistency across both of the sites. If someone visits LBPCentral and sees a feature they like, I want MNRCentral to have the same or a similar feature that they can enjoy (the vBExperience system, for example). If I thought I could buy the first license as soon as I had the money and make enough money to afford the second one soon after, then I would do it that way - however, with the current situation, the gap between upgrading LBPCentral and MNRCentral would be much too large for the standards I uphold for both sites.

However, on that note, at the current rate donations are coming in, we should have enough for both sites very soon (maybe even within a couple of days), so if you can donate, it is much appreciated.

Top right next to 'Welcome, Powershifter' is a donate button

When you donate, you get given a few little extra things for the forum (one being a green dot next to your username) and you have this for a certain amount of time. This is called the Doner Period. The more you donate, the longer it is. CC PM's you the date of when your doner period expires.

Ryan covered most of it. Some of the perks are not stated explicitly until you donate, but they are just about everything you could need on this site. The perks are even better if you don't already have some sort of bundle.

I also see that it's up and running. I notice that the cometchat bar across the bottom is wider than the frame of the site. I'm a bit obsessive compulsive, so are tweaks still being made?

I'm not going to complain, but just wondering.

This is great - forums, groups and now live chat! Even an old git like me is enjoying it!

Nicely done, CC, and big thanks to everyone who parted with a bit of cash to help fund it.

Listen, folks, ConfusedCartman and the other admins and mods give us this service for nothing: zip, zilch, zero. It's good to know there are people who are willing to give a few quid (or bucks) here and there if they can afford it to help keep the site going.

This is a great community. Thank you

It's not so much that it's wider than the frame, but just narrower than the window. Change you window size, you'll see what I mean. I imagine it's deliberate, and like not "tweakable".

A (very minor) issue I've noticed is that if you have the buddy list up and open some new LBPC tabs, they will all open with the buddy list up, but if you close it in one window, the others will stay up still and you have to close them individually. It is hardly an issue at all, I just figured I should mention it. 2009-09-18 00:04:00

That's fairly odd, I'm not sure why it does that. I'll report it as a bug - their support team is very active, so they'll help where they can.
