The Guitar Thread

So, does anyone here own or play a guitar? Is it acoustic or electric? What type is it? Why do you like playing teh geetar? =D

Personally, I don't own a guitar just yet, but I'm hoping you lot could help me with choosing what guitar to buy! I have no idea if I should get an acoustic, electric, semi-acoustic or electric acoustic guitar!

I know an acoustic is harder to play, and by mastering it, playing the electric guitar would be easy (or at least easier).

So, I'm hoping you guys can help me out here!

Also, which is better for both types (acoustic and electric), an electric-acoustic or a semi-acoustic? I really want to be able to get the feel of both types, using the same guitar!

Thanks in advance guys, and enjoy this thread! Rock on

acoustic or electric? Well this comes to what you want to do, I don't think acoustic is harder to learn, you are using the same strings and your fingers go in the same spots. But I would learn with acoustic and than move to a electric. Electric really would become about money, it costs more and than you have to get a amp for it also. While a acoustice you just need the guitar, it really is up too you. Electric has a cool sound and is fun to use but if you are starting I would look for a low price and go with a acoustic.2008-09-17 14:57:00

I've got an Electric Fender Stratocaster. Got it for my 18th Birthday. I really should learn to play it one of these days...

Sadly, I can't be any help. I did try to self teach but got nowhere. I would suggest getting lessons unless you are very driven.

Acoustic usualy has a MUCH wider neck, which is where most of the difficulty in playing it comes in. I'd advise you to get an electric because they're easier and better...

And as for a cross-over guitar.. (I would say get both, acoustic guitars are dead cheap) but I think the best would be electro-acoustic

EDIT: p.s. I own an acoustic but cant play it.

Get a drumkit yes?

I play bass guitar. And have for about five years, now. That's all I can play, aside from messing around on the piano and holding a steady beat on the drums. As for guitar...can't do much of anything, aside from trying to play what I do on bass and phailing in the process.

Pet peeve of mine: Bass "lines" that consist of root notes, with maybe a step between changes or a fifth thrown in being the only variation. I've also noticed that this style tends to be employed by those who first learned guitar, and then started playing bass... I believe that the bass is, and should be played as, an actual instrument, and as evidence for my position I present every Beatles album made, in particular Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Abbey Road.

So I may be terrible at chords, but I mentally have good tracking of the relations of notes to another, and so I can come up with variation bass lines on the fly. The downside is my lack of intimacy with the bass, because although I can play it fairly proficiently, getting what's in my head out through an amp is more difficult. But I'm working on it.

Also, I have a Kramer.

I have a PS3 les Paul and a PS2 SG. When I'm bored (really bored) I attempt to play songs on them. They only seem to be good for guitar hero.-_-2008-09-18 03:07:00

I own a Ibanez Electric Guitar, I have been playing it for about a year in a half, I strongly recommend an electric guitar if you have the money, they're just funner to play in my opinion. I can play several songs, mostly rock but I think im pretty good at it.

As to learning how to play, I would recommend the "Learn And Master The Guitar" Book. It comes with 18 cd's 9 play alongs and 18 lessons ( 2 lessons on each cd ) It really teaches you how to play guitar, like its the first time your holding one.

Downside is, it starts off really boring, learning the basics and chords, you don't play any fun songs, songs range from ( Christmas to National Anthems ) So don't expect Through The Fire And Flames by DragonForce lol. But it really does help, oh and Youtube is my bestfriend when it comes to learning songs, a lot of videos on how to play certain songs.

http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ for any song you want to play, need to learn how to play tabs but its pretty self explanatory and easy to learn them. But yea thats all I can do to help you.

Oh and one more thing, girls love guys that can play an instrument hahaha.

I have an Ibanez.
Go electric, I think it's more fun.

THIS
It will be excrutiatingly boring but it's necessary, just don't give up fast like most people do (when fingers hurt or you cant do a certain chord or whatever). Hang in there and have some patience (practice and patience is pretty much the key to it).

Good luck!
It's a fun hobby

I love playing the guitar, what I hate is having strings rip on you at a concert... Bad times, bad times... That actually gave me an idea for LBP, I'm going to make a guitar that you can pluck the strings at and it gives off musical notes, and make someone can stand on a fret and it makes different noises, hmm worth a shot if it's actually possible.

But yea, don't give up on playing the guitar, keep practicing and soon you will be able to play songs just by listening to them. It's a great hobby, or maybe an occupation?
