Do you play YOUR levels?

Archive: 23 posts

You create a level and you would probably play it over 100 times (maybe more) to get your level bug free and enjoyable for the player.

But would you play your own level not for the sake of fixing it, but just to have some fun?

For me personally, yes.....but only after its been published for a long time.
I need to forget about it before I can start enjoying it myself.

Id be the same as Zwollie, I would test my levels a lot more than 100 times (more like 500) so its takes a while for it to wear off and look at it in a new light.2009-09-16 09:17:00

What Zwollie said.
I can almost play through my levels with closed eyes when I get around to publishing them.

Yeah, I play them way to much while creating, every little thing is tested to death. Its only after a while I can return to them.

I played through Siberia from start to finish a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it because I had'nt played any of them since I finished them. And the first one was done in Decemeber last year

I think most of us play our levels to death when testing so that they don't break on people when we publish them. Even after I published LittleBigMemory though, I still play it fairly frequently.2009-09-16 10:40:00

I don't ever play my levels myself. I feel like I would just CRINGE if I went in there, noticing all the sloppy bits and stuff I'd want to fix, and worrying about if I ever missed something breakable.

And not to mention, as everyone else has, the ridiculous number of times I play through the level to test, test, test. I get pretty sick of them after all that. Especially when you're testing changes to the very END of the level. oh, god, crap is that ever annoying. You have to go through the WHOLE thing. AGAIN. Just to get to the last bit. And if something screws up?

I started to get conditioned to feel that sense of "oh, god, here we go again" every time i booted up a level.

I'm actually currently working on my third level, and I haven't been testing very much as I go. So I know that in the very last leg of this thing I'm going to be HATING this level. But it's all worth it down the road.

You could move the spawn gate nearer the end or stick a tetherless jetpack near the start. Thats what I do when I know Im happpy with the first half of the level.

I have a ritual when I first publish. I'll play the level, take some photos, play it again to try and get a decent score, and then possibly play it with friends if they want me to.

Then, a few weeks later, I'll play it again just for sentimental reasons.

I give them a go every now and then, it's probably been months since I last played them but I do like playing them.

When I play FT1 it feels a bit weird because there's stuff in there that doesn't feel upto scratch to me and how I'd do things now. Nothing really horrendous, but just stuff like having levers quite a bit smaller than their default size and things like that.

I've kind of built my own 'rules' and 'codes' of how I create and that's just one of the things I stay away from. But I guess it's nice to look back on to see how my creating has changed.

I keep thinking about pulling that down because when I think about it it does 'feel' like it's good enough, but then I'll play it through and it's still a good level, in my opinion, of course.

I'm considering putting my first ever level up for a week or so, just to let you all see it

I play Centralia and Crystal Cave constantly. they contain so many things that I love and that are a part of me that when I play them, I can't help but smile. ^__^

Super corny, I know, but totally the truth.

Oh, and I never play Fall of Winter. I hate that level.

Levels, music, artwork... and find it very hard for me to enjoy something I've created in general....

I mostly go back to my old levels just to see what I did to inspire me more for future levels or see how I developed as a creator. Some of my levels I will revisit for fun, especially with other people. My paintinator levels are a lot of fun with other people.

I go back and play mine once in a while... but I cringe when I do that. It's nice to know how far you've come as a creator when you look at your first few levels.2009-09-16 13:51:00

I never cringe when I play my very first level (Subterranean Sackboy Blues) even though now it looks a little rough around the edges. The horrible huge and clunky permanent switches make me laugh, the very rough way I interlinked layers then is very untidy and no doubt eats thermo, but its great to see how far I've come over the past 10 months or so.2009-09-16 14:00:00

I don't make fun/good/edible levels. But...no. I get tired very quickly and need constant change. Not that change comes when I want. [/end-emotional-day]2009-09-16 14:10:00

Outside of crazy testing I also replay my levels from time to time. Sometimes it refreshes the mind and give you ideas. It makes new ideas pop and sometimes there was those ideas you thought at the time but didn't do them.

I always play my levels for some reason, in test mode and just generally...Probably why I hate my work over time and keep trying to improve lol 2009-09-16 17:28:00

Of course! I'm not sure I would feel comfortable publishing a level that I didn't enjoy myself. This actually happen with Manufactured Madness. I had it about 90% complete when I realized that I wasn't enjoying it. Even though that version contained many of the elements of the final version, the flow of the design really hampered the experience, so I ditched it and started over until I felt it was fun.2009-09-16 18:16:00

I played my Jumping Castle level about 10,000 times in the course of building it, as I was constantly testing it to make sure that the changes were working.

But rather than getting sick of it after all that time, by the time I got around to publishing it, I was completely addicted to my own level

Whereas now if I go back and play it, I seem to experience it more like a newcomer to the level would.

i bring my friends into my levels time-to time during testing, to get another opinion, and see if its really ready to publish.

i play them to show off what i can do

i do have a "fun" level on my moon.
ill never publish it, because it wouldn't be any fun without me to stop it from breaking.
its my storage/testing/laboratory of doom. (i mostly just try to imitate the mechanics from scientific island, and maxed out)
