Odd gravity by Crisofilax

Archive: 41 posts

I don't know how this guy did it, but he made a level with real gravity manipulation, not just a level on a piston. I normally figure out everything in a level, but this level just plain confuses me, how did he do it?

In the level, you jump from colored blocks, the color of the blocks affects the gravity. Blue is normal, red is heavy, green is light, and arrows push. Check it out!

I'm going to have to try this level! I also may be able to figure out how to do it.2009-09-16 04:40:00

Man, this level was really good. I really don't know how he did that, he made it seem so perfect that it's almost impossible to think it's some sort of glitch. I'd like to know how he did it most definitely though.

Thanks for this.

Yeah i was baffled... i really dont know how he did it either.

Loved the design too, pretty simple but lets u focus on the amazing effects he created.

One thing i did notice is that the sackboy acts really wierd if u try and grab the less gravity platforms (i think it was the green ones). This leads me to believe he's using an invisible platform firing the player up when they jump.

Really well done tho.

It's not a glitch - he's using emitters emitting invisible glass "particles" to push the player. You can actually hear the sound of glass impact in many places in the level.

Also, on any green platform , grab the platform and watch what happens to sackboy's body. He's being pelted with invisible objects pushing him up - in this case, glass.

That could be true, but when you grab the bottom of a green platform, the same thing happens, sackboy starts flying around. I don't think the creator of the level would emit glass out of the bottom of the platform, unless he worked really hard just to confuse people.

EDIT: It turns out I've been completely wrong about how this is done. It's really an ingenious glitch.2009-09-16 13:45:00

That's not how he did it! I aced the level and got it, nothing is being emitted but I still can't tell how it was done...

Edit: I managed to do it, and it's definitely a glitch. It's really weird though...Add me on PSN and I'll show you how it's done.

Hi, there.

Thanks everyone, i'm glad you liked my level.

I don't like very much tutorial levels that have no gameplay, and i think is not too hard to ace the level to win the platforms. Once you do that, i think the curious should be able to figure it out.

Do you guys think i should make a tutorial level to explain how i did it?

@Jagrevi
No, that not how i did it, if you can ace the level to win the platforms, you?ll see there are nothing been emited (and there is no glass at all in the level, so i don't know what you heard).

Don't release a tutorial! Try to keep it a secret! I figured out how to do it, and others should be able to once they ace your level.2009-09-16 15:59:00

Now I'm curious - especially because there is a distinct "glass-on-glass impact sound" in the level.2009-09-16 16:04:00

No glass involved! Just ace the level, and it's pretty easy to figure out why it behaves like that.2009-09-16 16:10:00

I think i know what happening. It's the music, there is a part of the song with percusions that sound like glass.2009-09-16 16:17:00

Just aced it and saw what the mechanics are. That really is clever.

Now that I know what it is you've discovered, I had to heart the level.

Well done.

Yeah, thanks for giving the blocks out! The high jump will be especially useful! I can see the pads that speed you up being useful for cars, though I haven't yet tested to see the effect of objects on the blocks. I can now make my own blocks too!2009-09-16 16:31:00

I was really excited when I aced this so I could see what was behind it, then I realized I didn't turn on Community Prizes.
I went through and aced it again, and I have to say you did a brilliant job on this level.

Aced it in 1. ;D

It's very clever, and I see what you did, but I'm afraid I have no idea why it works.

It's a physics glitch is my guess. It basically puts rods in conflicting lengths with each other, making the physics system act wacky.

By the way, here's how the glitch is done. Place an invisible piece of dark matter, attach it to a rod, and the rod to the middle of any material you want. Set the rod to stiff, and length of 2.3. Now attach another rod to the middle of the same material, and to another piece of dark matter. Set it to 50 for low grav, 2 for low and don't set it to stiff. Then unpause if you are in pause mode, and get the on the material. You should have either low or high gravity!2009-09-16 23:12:00

What a great find! Did you discover this glitch, or hear of it somewhere else?

Either way, this is great. This is a glitch LBP has been waiting to find for a while. I don't generally use any glitches in my levels, but this is one I'll definitely implement when I see a need for it. There are tons of possibilities for this, not the least of which the many space levels floating around out there.

I haven't tried it, but I doubt it has to be 2 and 50. You could probably do .1 for basically no jumping ability, or 1000 for a jump to the roof of the level.

I already tried different lengths.

It obviously doesn't have to be exactly the lengths as shown in the level.

However, i made the piston really long and only a little bit longer, the variation in the height i jumped wasn't much.

The piston broke at me when I made it too long. I don't remember exactly how long it was when it broke, but it was way below 1000.

I just found out that the gravity platforms also effect creatures. EDIT: Maybe not.
This glitch can definitely be put to good use by someone.

It's a great level. I think he should make a tutorial. People will heart it. And tutorial. It's like FlareSkull's level. He made a tutorial and got twice as many hearts. Plus i whanna know. 2009-09-20 19:43:00

It's so simple, I can explain it right here.

Make a block on the front layer.

Make sure the block isn't connected or glued to anything.

Make a piece of dark matter 8 small grid spaces or so below the block on the middle layer.

Attach a rod from that dark matter to the block.

Set the rod to stiff, don't change the length.

Make another piece of dark matter in the same area, but on the front layer.

Attach a rod from the front piece of dark matter to the block, do not stiffen.

The length of that rod will affect the platforms gravity, 0=No jumping 60=Low gravity.

I think I will make a thread of a tutorial for this.

EDIT: The thread is up!

oh! Didn't realize there was a topic on Odd Gravity. I remember someone talking earlier

on LBPC how to change gravity, (before i ran into Odd Gravity, like a week ago) the same trick is also

used in Phosphorescence before the final boss (about 6:20).

I got some videos on both of them

Someone want to PM me how it's done? I pinky promise I shall ace it later but I can't get on my ps3 at the minute and really curious?

Is it a glitch? If it's a glitch I'm slightly less curious as I'm not a fan of them haha

I explained on how do it right above JKThree's post. And yes it's a glitch, but maybe some day MM might put in un-glitched gravity manipulation.

It's sort of a glitch, but not a serious one. It just happens that when a ledge is supported by two rods/pistons/whatever that are set to different lengths, it acts all funky.

I do expect it to get patched, though, based on the behavior shown at 3:15 of the odd gravity video above.
