A closer look at the GOTY bonus levels

Archive: 16 posts

The folks over at VGBlogger have published an article taking a closer look at the 18 player created bonus levels included in the recently released Game of the Year Edition of LittleBig Planet. Man that was a long sentence.

Needless to say, if you have yet to jump on the LBP bandwagon, now?s the time to do it ? $60 gets you the full original game and all of these bonuses. And I can?t think of a better companion for new PS3 slim owners than Sackboy!
But what about existing LittleBigPlanet players, creators and sharers who adopted Sackboy as their own from the very beginning ? are the 18 bonus levels worth re-buying the game for? Before answering that I suppose I should probably talk about the levels first. Here we go…

Check out mini reviews of each level, over on VGBlogger.

someone with the game of year should make a new profile and heart ONLY these 18 levels so it is easier to find them when you are looking for them2009-09-14 15:31:00

I was wondering 'How did the people who have the levels hearted get to play them originally'?.
What I mean is they don't show up anywhere else. Even if you know the creators and go to their profiles those levels don't show up so how were they accessed in the first instance ?

I read the reviews.
Basically what I think that 6 months in LBP are a hell of a time.
Those 18 guys create without even the creator pack, but they put a lot of efforts to do things that now are way more easier.
A lot of things have been discovered in 6 month, a lot of tricks, useful infos.
In less than 6 months we will have water, online create, maybe premade logic switches and God knows what else.

So it's a bit unfair to judge levels and creators.
I know that it would have been impossible to do things in a different way, due to time limits, but that's a pity that those skilled guys weren't granted the support they deserved.

"The Tumblerizer is another mini-game. You hop inside a rotating maze and collect as many points as you can without getting crushed, burned or electrocuted. Decent fun, but I've seen plenty of these spinning maze contraptions before."

Hmmm... strange, I haven't seen any spinning mazes the same as mine except for... well... mine. Sure, there are plenty of mazes that spin, but I haven't really seen any where each row rotates in opposite directions.

The end of the article says,

"Of course, in a perfect world it?d be nice of Sony and Media Molecule do the right thing and put these levels into a separate DLC pack. Then everyone would be happy!"

I totally agree. We shouldn't have to find 'loop holes' to play other user created levels. I think it's great that these creators were chosen, but wouldn't they appreciate the entire LBP community being able to easily experience their levels? I would understand MM making these 18 levels only temporarily accessible to the GOTY owners, but after a certain time they should be released to everyone.

... oh yeah ... and they should be free. That's what "sharing" is all about. And if they do come out in a pack, and there's a 4.99 (or whatever) tag slapped on them, are the creators like Nuclearfish getting the royalties off of their hard work? I would hope so, but doubt it. Although, I really don't think MM would (or even could) charge us for this pack .... but you never know ....

i kind of find it funny when they said the following:

"But what about existing LittleBigPlanet players, creators and sharers who adopted Sackboy as their own from the very beginning ? are the 18 bonus levels worth re-buying the game for?"

i feel in a way angry because they just said we'd have to pay $60 just to play those levels...mind you they are good levels i bet but $60 to have a second CD in my room collecting dust is kind of retarded

so i hope they release this as free DLC sooner or later

Well, looks like it works somehow. I'm a whore I suppose because I simply bought the GOTY edition to play those levels and be in the Modnation Racers beta. I had some monies lying around so I didn't even ask myself much questions and handed my wallet.

I dont like how GOTY buyers get rewarded for buying a game way after it came out... what do we get Mm? after buying the game the day it came out and then paying well over just $30 for your add-ons, wheres our reward? What do we get?2009-09-16 11:23:00

Products devalue over time and become harder to sell. Simple. New release DVDs, games, etc can be sold at a higher price then when they are nearly a year old. So they take the devalued product and bundle in extra/exclusive content, to bump the prices back up, give some added value, give marketing an angle to work with and thus increase revenue. It's nothing to do with rewards or favouritism. It's very simple business. It's just like any other media and while it was mildly annoying to me to begin with it's no different to the collector's edition DVD with bonus features coming out later than the standard edition.2009-09-16 11:40:00
